Chapter 394

Chapter 394

Days without work always felt like they dragged on forever. I still woke up early each morning and joined them for breakfast.

I'd watch them leave for school and work, then sit on the couch with nothing to do.

"Mrs. Morgan, I bought a lot of fresh flowers today. Since you seem bored, why don't we arrange them together?" Indigo came back with an armful of blooms.

The moment she walked in, she invited me to pass the time with flower arranging.

I'd had zero inspiration lately. I couldn't even think about design work. Whenever I picked up a pen, my mind went blank—I couldn't put anything down.

I stared at the TV screen, which reflected my image. I raised my hand, then lowered it. When would these days ever end...

"Alright."

Indigo had just set the vase on the table when my phone rang.

The sudden ringtone startled me. I'd forgotten when I'd switched it to ring mode.

"Mrs. Morgan, your phone."

I looked at the screen. Kennedy was calling.

"Hello?"

I leaned back, unable to find a comfortable position.

"I knew it was your number..."

"What's wrong?"

"Boss, can you come to my place right now?"

Why was she suddenly inviting me to her house?

"Is something the matter?"

Kennedy was extremely independent. She rarely bothered me, and since I'd recently approved her leave, I'd assumed she wasn't even in the country.

"You'll know when you get here. I'll send you the address."

"Okay."

I'd been to her place once before. The driver should know the address.

Indigo handed me a pair of gloves. "Mrs. Morgan, watch out for the thorns on the rose stems."

"I need to go out for a bit. Kennedy needs me for something."

"Will you be gone long?"

"I'm not sure."

She said quietly, "Mr. Morgan is coming home for lunch. He specifically mentioned it."

"Alright. If I'm not back, just tell him the truth."

I didn't want to lie. The previous times had only been out of desperation.

Going to see Kennedy wasn't anything bad. I figured Levi wouldn't overthink it. I was a free person, not his caged bird.

"Okay, Mrs. Morgan. Be careful. Or maybe take Ms. Ruth with you? It'd be good to have someone with you."

Indigo's suggestion made sense. Faye and Kennedy were friends too. But I had this particular feeling—I sensed Kennedy wanted me at her house for something important.

If it were trivial, she could have explained over the phone.

"No need. I'll go by myself."

I had the driver come pick me up right away. He happened to be resting at the nearby quarters. Levi had arranged accommodations nearby for convenience.

He arrived quickly.

I reached Kennedy's house around ten-thirty in the morning—prime working hours.

The driver rang the doorbell for me, then left.

The door slowly opened. When Kennedy saw me, she grabbed my hand. "Boss, you're finally here. I thought you weren't coming."

"I said I would, so I wouldn't back out. What exactly is going on?"

Kennedy reminded me to keep my voice down, then pointed toward the living room. "See for yourself."

Her arm was still in a sling, not yet healed.

I followed her inside, and then I saw Jenna...

She was holding Puff's leash, looking like she was about to take the dog for a walk.

When Jenna saw me, her face filled with shock. She couldn't speak.

"What are you doing here?"

She didn't answer, just looked at Kennedy.

"Boss, do you two know each other?"

"Not really."

I didn't know how to answer. After all, from last night until now, I hadn't received any response from Jenna.

Kennedy smiled. "She's the part-time worker I hired. She knows nursing care and is great with animals. I haven't been able to walk Puff lately, so she took my job posting."

I never imagined that besides working at the night market, Jenna was also doing hourly jobs.

"Go ahead and walk the dog."

Jenna didn't say anything. She just took Puff and left.

As she passed by me, I could feel her tension. My appearance must have been a shock to her too.

This city was too small. I hadn't expected we'd meet again like this.

When the door closed, Kennedy pulled me down to sit and interrogated me.

"Boss, you two really don't know each other well?"

"That's right."

"Do you know why I contacted you?"

"Tell me."

"When she was getting her phone, a piece of paper fell out of her bag. I recognized the number, so I dialed it. The moment I called, your name popped up on the screen."

No wonder she'd said that when she first picked up.

I hadn't expected to see Jenna at Kennedy's house. Truth be told, I was nervous too. I didn't know what Jenna was thinking right now.

Kennedy frowned. "Boss, how does she have that paper? And who is Arabella?"

Curiosity really could turn someone into a detective. On my way here, Kennedy must have pieced something together, especially since the card was in my handwriting. People who work in design can recognize handwriting at a glance.

The reason she hadn't said anything outright was that she was waiting for me to explain.

"I wrote the card. I left that number for her."

I told her honestly. There was no point in hiding it from her.

"You two aren't close, so you both know this Arabella, right?"

"Yes."

I sighed. "Arabella has hurt both of us. Recently, she's been harassing Natalia again."

Kennedy slapped her thigh. "You're saying she's harassing Natalia?"

"Exactly."

"She and I have had bad blood for over a decade. She recently got into a fight with Faye, and Faye got injured because of it. She's also been extorting Natalia."

"I can't believe this."

I took another deep breath. "You've met her. I remember you saw her once—things are a bit fuzzy, but I remember you argued with her on my behalf."

"Me?"

Obviously, she didn't remember either. The fragments of memory were too scattered. I couldn't piece them together anymore.

"She's the mother of my husband's ex-girlfriend."

"That relationship is really complicated."

Kennedy was clearly confused.

"Bottom line, Arabella has hurt both me and this part-timer you hired. I want Arabella to stop interfering in my life for good, so I wanted to work with her."

"That shouldn't be hard. You both have a common goal."

"I don't know if there'll even be a chance."

I didn't know what Jenna was thinking. When she saw me just now, beyond her surprise, I could see her trying to avoid my gaze.

Especially with Kennedy calling me here—would Jenna think I'd deliberately arranged this? It was really just coincidence.

"Is there anything I can do?"

I smiled. "Just focus on healing. Try to recover soon so you can still work on the winter collection."

Kennedy shook her head. "Boss, I'm useless right now. All I can do is watch the company from afar and feel helpless."

"Since you're on leave, you should completely relax."

She wiggled her arm. "Look at me. This 'is' relaxing. What can I even do?"

The doorbell rang. It must be Jenna coming back. Kennedy started to get up, but I stopped her.

"I'll get the door."
