Chapter 124
After we came back from the Morgan mansion, we didn't go anywhere else.
Celestia also agreed to stay with them. Probably because she rarely saw her grandfather, she especially cherished the time with him. Her grandfather really doted on her - he had already bought her lots of things abroad.
Levi's parents mentioned early on that if we found taking care of the child tiring, we could send Celestia to stay with them, and they'd take good care of her.
But both Levi and I couldn't bear to be apart from our daughter.
The end of the month was the most troublesome. Levi still had some work to do, so he went to his study.
I gave Indigo half a day off to let her go out and relax.
I put away the gifts Rhea gave me, and just when inspiration struck, I designed some things. I was definitely going to make good use of that amethyst - I wanted to design matching family pieces for the three of us.
"Levi."
I silently said his name in my heart, thinking back to his performance at the Morgan mansion today. I felt proud, like I had this feeling that my husband was really outstanding.
On a whim, I decided to bring him a glass of orange juice.
It was freshly squeezed orange juice that Indigo brought me before she left. I'd been too busy to drink it, so I figured I'd pass it along to him.
I simply threw on a coat. The winter cold was really harsh. I practically ran and skipped my way to the study door.
"Hello?"
Levi was on the phone.
"Levi, New Year's is coming soon. I've already given her the money."
He had it on speaker. I heard Jessa's voice. The "her" she mentioned must be me.
"Mm."
"Time flies so fast. People and things change so quickly, too. I've been thinking about the past a lot lately. If I hadn't come back to the country, would everything not have gone so wrong?"
I moved closer, perking up my ears to listen to their conversation, but it was really cold...
"What's past is past."
"But can you completely forget it?"
Levi didn't say anything. Would he really forget?
Jessa pressed on, "Levi, tell me where we went wrong. How did it turn out like this? I really, really love you. My mom's in prison, my dad passed away, and even you won't talk to me anymore. I feel like life is so meaningless."
"Life isn't just about love."
"But I don't want anything else. I just want you. I've always worked hard on myself, trying to be the way you like, working hard to improve, just hoping to get a little closer to you."
"Just when we were about to have a result, Blair showed up. She married you, became your wife. All these years, I've asked myself over and over what I did wrong, why you were so heartless to abandon me back then?"
I couldn't stand the cold anymore. I was about to go back to the living room to warm up, but I was also curious about what they would say. Curiosity really does kill the cat.
"Are you saying your feelings were genuine without any pretense?" Levi asked her back.
After a few seconds, Jessa cleared her throat and answered.
"I swear I was completely devoted to you. From beginning to end, I hoped you could be sincere too." Jessa's tone was very certain.
"I asked you if you knew how to fold stars."
"I knew how when I was little, but I forgot when I grew up."
Jessa's voice grew weaker and weaker.
My heart started to get nervous, too. Was Levi going to bring up the stars thing again?
"I also asked you how old you were when you changed your name. You said you were very young."
"Yeah, it was when I was little."
Levi sighed, "There's still a difference between 'very young' and 'when I was little.'"
Maybe Levi never told Jessa about that childhood incident. When he first heard Jessa's name, he never suspected there could be two people in this world with that name.
"Levi, I don't understand what you're saying. My feelings for you are real. I know your relationship has gotten better, but I still love you."
Jessa was declaring her love profusely, as if she wanted to tell him she could love no one but him in this world.
"Don't keep making the same mistake."
I could hear Levi's sigh clearly from outside the door.
I was too cold. I was wearing pajamas, and my coat wasn't thick either.
"I'm freezing..."
I muttered quietly, ready to leave. I wasn't interested in whatever they were saying anymore - it was just too cold.
My hands and feet were shaking. When I turned around, the glass bumped against the door, making a crisp click. My heart jumped to my throat.
"Why don't you come in if you're already here?"
Levi called out to me. I closed my eyes and paused. This was really awkward.
"It's so cold out, come in quickly."
Levi opened the door wide, inviting me in.
I turned around and smiled awkwardly, "Um, I just got here. I heard you were busy, so I was about to go back."
"I'm not busy."
My poor acting could be seen through by him at a glance. I was shivering from the cold - he must know I was eavesdropping on their conversation.
"Levi, are you listening?"
Jessa was calling him from the other end of the phone.
"Is it really okay?"
I asked tentatively. I walked forward and put the orange juice in his hand. "I'm fine, just came to bring you this."
Levi smiled mischievously, "If you don't come in, it'll freeze naturally."
"Uh, well, I'm fine. Now that I've delivered it, I'll head back. I just remembered I have some work stuff too."
Even I felt embarrassed.
Levi pulled me directly into the study. He pressed me down into a chair.
"Levi, are you still listening?"
Jessa's voice was urgent. She should be able to hear a bit of our conversation.
"Yes."
Levi sat down and took a sip of orange juice.
"New Year's is coming. Can we meet? I really want to see you."
If this were before, Levi would definitely have agreed without hesitation.
I kept my head down, rubbing my hands.
"No."
Levi refused her, right in front of me.
"You..."
"I'm with my family."
"She's with you, isn't she?"
Jessa became dejected. I could hear it - her tone was full of disappointment.
"Mm."
"Then I won't bother you."
Jessa hung up hastily. She must be really sad right now, because back when I knew they were together and listened to their phone calls, I was full of disappointment, too.
I looked up at him. Had he really drawn a clear line with Jessa? Would he really cut things off completely?
"Is there something on my face?"
Levi waved his hand in front of my eyes.
"No."
I widened my eyes, "She said she wanted to meet you. You were a bit heartless."
"You want me to go see her?" Levi raised an eyebrow.
Seeing his slightly teasing smile, I lowered my head, not wanting to speak.
But I didn't want to hold it in either. I rubbed my palms together, "What does it have to do with me? It's your business."
Levi picked up the orange juice and drank two or three sips in a row, "Mm... tastes good, just a bit sour."
He couldn't be thinking I was jealous, could he? When did he become so full of himself?
I kept my head down, not looking at him. I could imagine his smug look, but compared to his cold CEO demeanor, this was a bit cuter.
I heard their conversation just now very clearly. On the surface, Levi has decided not to have any more contact with her.
