CHAPTER 33
I couldn’t stop thinking about the weird woman and her weird words. She had been so sure of meeting me, and asking if I didn’t mind was a way of coding her real message which had been we were going to meet again whether I liked it or not. I had spent all my lunchtime and the time after wondering who she could be and what made her so sure she knew me. I hate that I was letting something this small take up my attention, and Reeves hated it too because he had to steal kisses from me to realize that I wasn’t at work with that woman, instead, I had been on a date with my darling man that looked more of a meal than the pasta before us.
“Are you okay?” Reeves's concerned voice spoke out. How do I explain to him that I met some weird woman at work today and she more or less threatened me, without it sounding very serious?
“Yeah, I had a long day at work today,” I forced in a smile. If Reeves noticed the fakeness of my smile, then he didn’t say anything. He nodded and concentrated on his food. I tried to do the same but it only landed me in more thoughts. It was only when I received a notification from someone on Instagram that I was able to figure out who Mrs. Callaway was.
I see you’re having trouble with dinner while trying to figure out who I am
The message read; it had come from someone who had sent a lot of messages to me, and all from the same day. I looked through the previous messages only to find that she had been the same person who had sent me those messages while I was on a date with Reeves. Firstly, I think my being scared of her and her words have been justified, because, the only logical way she’d know I’m having dinner, is if she was in the same restaurant as I was, and she could see me because I hate to think that she had me followed, or worse, she followed me about herself. Secondly, I was finding it hard to believe the heavenly Mrs. Callaway was just like those other women who wanted to kill me for taking money from her husband who I barely even remember.
I laughed, a little too loud than Reeves would like. The look on his face told me just how much I had been on a bad date. I swallowed hard at the sharpness of his chiseled jaw on his angry head. I had to do something to get him back in a great mood, just like how he had been when we had arrived.
“Hey, I’m sorry,” I stretched out my hand over the table to Reeves, in response, Reeves took his hands off the table and situated them on his lap, letting me know in his childish way that he was angry at me.
“I’m sorry baby,” I bit my lip as I apologized. Reeves loved it when I called him baby, I don’t even get it sometimes.
“Will you tell me what’s going on then? Firstly you had a scowl on your face and then you’re laughing demonically at your phone like you were bothered for nothing all this while,” Reeves broke down. I suppressed my smile, knowing that any smile or giggle from me would only provoke him even more.
“It’s nothing, I swear. I met one of my Instagram followers today and I was trying to place where I knew her from, I just realized it when she sent me a dm, you have nothing to worry about,” that seemed to do the trick with Reeves, and he was back to his happy self, telling me about how his day went and what not.
I peeked at the phone, only to see that Mrs. Callaway had sent a message—more like a string of messages—talking about how we had important things to discuss and how she’d send a driver to get me from work. What did she think I was, a dumb black girl without any brains? I sneaked my phone under the table and typed out my response to her very generous offer. I had replied telling her not to bother and it was going to take the grace of God to make me go out of my way to see her. I don’t think my response sat well with her because she went on about how I didn’t want to mess with her in any way. I didn’t respond further. I couldn’t believe I had seen her like an equal earlier. I felt disgusted by the fact I compared my graceful being to her not so graceful one. I couldn’t be blamed though looks could be very deceiving.
Though I saw Mrs. Callaway in a new light, it didn’t help the fact that I was scared of her and her ways, which was why I decided to return home with Reeves, mean the woman followed me to the restaurant, who knows what she’d do to me if she follows me home; a place I live all alone, especially after I ran my mouth about how it would take the grace of God for me to agree to see her, no ma’am, I won’t let myself go like that. I’ve worked too hard and come too far to be sent to heaven just like that. Reeves liked the idea very much, you could tell from his giddy smile. The man was just a child, easy to please with attention, and I felt very sorry that I wasn’t being the best person to him; it’s just that, I didn’t want to die or pull him into my mess. I had done all these things before I met him, and I didn’t want him getting involved with it.
