Chapter 28
Dean walked across the wasteland, holding a folder of papers; which included photographs from the crime scene, truthful information from witnesses and other evidence.
He promised Foster to find out everything about his mother's death, and he kept his promise. The truth was right now in his hands, and he was waiting any minute to give these documents to his best friend, brother in spirit.
The curly-haired guy entered the abandoned concrete building, exiting to the middle of the first floor. He turned to face the entrance, and for some reason excitement reached him with renewed vigor, as if something was about to happen.
It was already 3 pm and 15 minutes on the clock, the blond man was late, which was surprising for him.
The feeling that someone was standing behind him overwhelmed all thoughts. The guy turned around sharply and what he saw plunged him into shock and incomprehension.
There was no one there... Empty boxes were scattered throughout the room, and the columns stood randomly, creating a kind of labyrinth.
There was not a hint of any stranger.
Dean Tonri faced the exit again, urging himself to calm down because he was just overworking himself.
The black barrel was pointed straight at the target, one eye closed to focus on the given point of the shot. The young man stepped out from behind the concrete pillar, so quietly that he went unnoticed.
The brown-haired man pulled the hook, and the bullet flew out at incredible speed right in the direction of the curly-haired guy's heart. The unknown remained standing still, watching the death.
Dean's eyes widened with unexpected pain in amazement. He knew for sure that it wasn't James, and he also knew he was hooked.
Life flowed from his body like sand in an hourglass.
The papers fell from his hands, disintegrating next to him. With a shaking hand, he touched his chest, noticing the scarlet blood that continued to flow. He stood firmly on his feet, continuing to fight for his life. The guy realized that this was his end, and this time forever.
The body went limp, and the legs stopped holding. Tonri fell to his knees, swallowing the lump in his throat.
'I'm sorry, James,' he trailed off, his next words coming out with difficulty. 'that I'm leaving you...'
And then the curly-haired boy fell dead on the cold concrete.
* * * *
James Foster walked down the corridor, going down to the first floor where the rest of the guys were. He had already listened to the two missed voice messages on his answering machine, which were from Dean. The guy understood that a lot of time had passed since the call and there was simply no point in going there.
The wide doors opened and people froze like statues in a museum. Nick turned towards the sound, immediately furrowing his brows as he noticed what kind of person had entered the room.
'Have fun with her all day yesterday, right?' Miller shouted with poison in his voice, and an abnormal smile appeared on his face.
'What's going on, Nick?' Said Foster, raising his eyebrows.
The brown-haired man stepped away from the two guys, angrily heading straight for the blond man.
He confidently believed that it was precisely his mistake.
If he had come to the meeting, nothing would have happened.
'You and Hailey are to blame for this shit,' the young man hissed angrily, poking his chest with his index finger.
'Stop it, Miller!' He was warned by a brunette who was standing nearby.
'In short, I do not care about the nonsense that you are talking right now. I don't have time for this,' James shoved his friend aside, stepping forward a little to scan the room with his eyes.
The burly guy was sitting on the couch, staring at his phone. He raised his head, ready to tell the truth.
'You won't find him, Jay.'
'Dean?' Said the blond. 'Oh, he's probably still with Nathan, right? I'm going to go to him.'
'You won't find him, Jay,' the young man repeated without emotion.
'What's the matter with you?' Foster was furious at the strange behavior of the guys.
Half of the guys sighed heavily, not daring to say anything.
They knew how hard it would be for him.
They knew he would break.
Nick thought he was to blame.
Nick left, slamming the door loudly. He couldn't see Foster, at least not now.
James looked around, not understanding what was going on.
Everyone looked lost and seemed to want to say something, but everyone remained silent.
The truth was so close...
'Go away, Jay,' the brunette said, sitting on the couch. 'Everyone needs to rest. Rest you too.'
'Relax? Well, when you decide to change your damn mood, call me. I need Dean, he has a very important message for me.'
'Go, James.'
The guy left the room, angrily slamming the door. All this silence around him was infuriating.
The road in this state was incredibly short, and the car was fast enough.
He dialed the learned number again and again, hoping to hear a man's hoarse voice, but there was no change.
'Subscriber's phone is turned off or out of network coverage. Please call back later or leave a voice message after the beep.'
'Crap!' The blond in anger threw the phone on the empty seat, which was next to the driver.
The speed exceeded the permitted speed, much faster changing the scenery outside the window that James did not pay attention to, because all he cared about was getting to his destination as soon as possible.
The guy quickly appeared near the apartment. He stood in front of the door, pressing the bell non-stop, because no one had opened it for quite a long time.
An unexpected bright light entered the eyes, causing the pupils to narrow. The blond stumbled into the room, shoving Brown in the chest with both hands to let him pass.
'Where the hell is Dean? Tonri, come out!' Foster shouted loudly as he opened the door to each room. The eyes ran from one place to another like crazy and wild. 'Why the hell are you not picking up the phone?! I called you every minute!'
Nathan tried to draw attention to himself, but it was all in vain, because the guy at point-blank range did not notice him.
When even the bathroom was checked, the blond turned to face Evans in puzzlement, noticing his shabby appearance. Hair was disheveled and dirty, lips were bitten tightly, there was not even a trace of a smile, which was very strange.
Eyes... His eyes.
And then something stabbed in my chest with fear.
Red, swollen eyes looked at him in despair, about to shed bitter tears again.
'He’s not here,' the brown-haired man said quietly, looking down, causing salty tears to flow down his cheeks. 'he's no longer around.'
Nathan finally broke down, leaving for their bedroom. He buried his face in the pillow, drowning out the loud sobs that still reached Foster's ears.
His love is no more exist.
His significant other is no longer by his side.
His last love died, leaving him alone.
'Oh, we must have missed him! He must have been on his way to me. I need to go back, otherwise I will lose him again,' the blond began to chatter loudly, trying to force his thoughts to shut up in his head.
'He's gone, James! He is dead! I let him go, damn you, to you! Dean didn't come back! He seemed to disappear, and then your people found him in an abandoned building! My boy lay face down on the cold concrete in a pool of his own blood!' The voice finally broke, and the guy fell silent, trying to regain his breath.
'What you said?'
Nathan got to his feet, coming face to face with Foster.
'Near Dean lay his phone. The last message was from you.'
'What did it say?'
'I will come.'
'Where will I go?'
'You really don't know anything?' Evans asked wearily. He felt much better after venting his emotions. James shook his head in confirmation. 'Dean made an appointment for you in the vacant lot at 3:00 pm.'
'I didn't know or hear anything.'
'He collected all the documents about the mysterious case of Williams Foster on the account of your mother's death. He was on his way to give them to you.'
'What does all of this mean? Who killed Dean on my behalf?'
'Looks like you have a rat in your lair.'
James completely withdrew into himself, coming to the mountains. It was that special place where she and Dean loved to be. From here a beautiful view opened up, there was silence here, allowing you to be alone with yourself.
The world around me went out of my head completely. Incredible anger overshadowed every single feeling, completely immersing the body in the object to be killed. Tears continued to form in her eyes, causing them to be furiously red and swollen.
James grabbed the stone with force, throwing it from a high mountain, after which he clenched his fists, not knowing where to put his rage.
He pulled out a pistol, loading it with a full clip of cartridges. The guy stood on the edge of the mountain with a weapon in his hand.
The cold muzzle of a pistol touched his temple.
The eyes closed.
Short inhale, short exhale.
All thoughts, feelings, memories disappeared in his head, only a gray fog slowly erased everything after one.
James pursed his lips, completely unprepared for a sound eternal sleep, because he was not guilty of this.
Williams Foster must pay for his sins. There are already too many of them.
A large number of people gathered in the cold building. They were all in the hall, listening to a rather dangerous plan for their next grand entry into the city.
And this time the main target is Williams Neil Foster.
Foster got up from his chair, walking over to the main table, which stood in the middle of the room, completely littered with various blueprints.
Nick took a red marker in his hands, leaving a thick dot on the sheet:
'He'll be here.'
'How do you know he will be there?'
'He will have a conference that day,' Jay replied without emotion.
'I'll go to him with Foster,' Miller warned everyone, casting a brief glance at the blond man.
'I'll go to him alone, Nick!' Jay barked, slamming his hand on the table. The papers flew slightly into the air, returning back to the surface. Several of the blueprints that lay on the edge fell to the floor along with markers and pencils. 'Don't doubt that I will kill him.'
Miller straightened his shoulders, his icy eyes glaring at the dark ocean.
'I don't doubt it. I have a business with your father.'
'Only when I send the message 'MAYDAY! MAYDAY! MAYDAY!', you can enter the building. Nick and I will go in unnoticed so as not to create unnecessary turmoil.'
The girl lay in her room on the bed, forgetting to turn off the TV. Her eyes were closed and she was snoring softly, ignoring the outgoing noise. The door opened and a young man entered the room, immediately finding Hailey with his eyes.
'Angel, wake up,' a hoarse male voice whispered, sitting on the edge of the bed. He shook the young lady around the waist, leaning his face closer to the girl to whisper again. 'angel.'
Mackenzie heard another voice in her sleep besides the noise from the TV, slowly starting to wake up. She felt a hand on her waist, and then again a man's voice.
The girl realized that it was Foster and she calmed down, not wanting to open her sleepy eyes.
