Chapter 40: Questioning
Amelia had no awareness of being a visitor to a patient - she made no effort to keep the noise down.
She stood outside the hospital room door and through the glass window saw James's eyes look toward her.
She raised her hand to push open the door and walked straight in, her high heels clicking elegantly.
Seeing James immediately get up excitedly when he saw her, Amelia's lips curved into a perfect smile as she greeted him, "James."
Killing two birds with one stone.
Coming to see Mia at this time would both cause her to lose the baby and send a signal to James.
That she really wasn't angry at him for his momentary loss of control last night when he crossed the line.
To put his mind at ease.
So they could go back to being friends again.
And she could continue to occupy the most important and only position in his heart.
Keeping James firmly under her control.
Given James's status and position in Imperial City now, she wanted to keep him even more tightly in her grasp.
She really hadn't expected that a bastard child could become so successful. Her whim of charity back then had brought her benefits far beyond what she'd imagined.
......
When James saw Amelia walking in, his expression changed dramatically.
His brow furrowed instantly.
He instinctively looked down at Mia on the hospital bed.
Her eyes were still closed - she hadn't woken up.
He breathed a slight sigh of relief.
Good that she wasn't awake.
But—
She seemed disturbed by the sound of the high heels even in her sleep, looking particularly uncomfortable.
Her brow, which had finally relaxed a bit while holding his hand all night, was furrowing tighter and tighter in her sleep because of the noise.
Seeing this, James's face instantly darkened.
A flash of displeasure crossed his lowered eyes.
Right now, nothing was more important than letting Mia rest properly.
Including Amelia.
Why did she have to show up now of all times?
James carefully withdrew his hand.
With a dark expression, he rushed to the hospital room door in a few large steps and blocked Amelia's path.
......
Amelia thought James was so excited to see her that he came forward to greet her.
Her smile grew even brighter. Seeing him reach out his hand toward her, she satisfactorily raised her hand to pass him her bag.
For him to hold it for her.
But James didn't take the bag - instead, he grabbed her arm directly.
So cooperative?
Was he determined to divorce Mia to be with her?
Not even hiding it in front of Mia anymore?
The gleam in Amelia's eyes deepened. Just as she was about to cooperate and lean closer to him, she was suddenly pulled outward by James.
This completely opposite development from what she expected made her expression freeze instantly.
What was James doing?
......
Noble and elegant as Amelia was, whenever she went out, high heels never left her feet, regardless of the occasion.
It had been this way since childhood.
In the past, he thought Amelia looked beautiful walking in high heels.
Her swaying steps were both elegant and charming.
But at this moment, that sound was extremely grating to his ears.
Each step made him very angry.
In his eyes, Amelia was thoughtful and faultless in her conduct.
But this time, she really had no sense of propriety.
What kind of place was this?
This was a hospital room!
A place where patients needed to rest!
Didn't she know this would disturb Mia, who needed to rest properly right now?
James was somewhat worried and angry.
Angry at Amelia's lack of judgment.
Worried that Mia would be woken up and see Amelia.
Only one thought filled his mind.
To quickly get Amelia out of the room before Mia woke up, not giving her a chance to upset Mia further.
Because he was in a hurry, he used a lot of force. Amelia in her high heels stumbled as he pulled her, practically half-dragging her out of the room.
Amelia was too shocked initially to react.
How could she have imagined that one day James would manhandle her like this?
How could he bear to be rough with her?
Had Mia driven James crazy by refusing to divorce using the child he cared about?
That he would actually turn his anger on her.
......
It wasn't until she was dragged out of the room that Amelia came to her senses, and the smile on her face had long since disappeared.
Her eyes full of anger, she cried out in pain, her tone unable to suppress her fury: "James, let go, you're hurting me."
Hearing Amelia cry out in pain, James's body reacted instinctively - even in his extreme anger, the force in his hand loosened slightly.
Amelia took the opportunity to break free, shaking off his large hand, her eyes full of anger looking at James.
Although he had immediately loosened his grip when he heard her cry of pain, he had dared to manhandle her.
This point could not be easily forgiven.
But before she could voice her accusation, James spoke first.
He deliberately lowered his voice.
But what came out was not an apology, but a questioning tone: "What are you doing here?"
Questioning?
Amelia's first reaction was that her unstable emotions from being provoked by James were affecting her hearing.
How could James possibly use a questioning tone with her?
But...
Even though she was certain it was impossible, an inexplicable feeling still rose within that impossibility.
James seemed to be slipping somewhat out of her control.
This feeling was very subtle.
Something that was clearly impossible, but—
Amelia couldn't quite figure it out. She was smart enough not to clash head-on with James at this moment.
It wasn't appropriate.
Amelia adjusted her emotions quickly. She rapidly suppressed her anger and softened her tone, but didn't lower her volume to match James's.
She said to him in a retreating-to-advance manner: "After you left last night, my stomach felt uncomfortable. I didn't sleep well all night. When I woke up this morning, I still felt very uncomfortable, so I came to the hospital to get it checked."
"I happened to hear some nurses downstairs mention Mia. When I heard it was Mia who was hospitalized, I was very worried, so I came up to see her."
Amelia was first giving him a warning, reminding him of exactly what he had done last night.
Almost crossing the line, and then doing something as terrible as leaving her alone at the residential area entrance.
Second, she was deliberately trying to make him feel sorry for her.
As soon as James heard "last night," his expression changed instantly.
He was not innocent last night.
Before he could explain to Mia about his relationship with Amelia, if Mia heard about what happened last night, there would only be one result.
It would upset her even more.
James instinctively looked up past Amelia toward the hospital room door behind her.
Seeing she hadn't woken up yet, his heart, which had risen to his throat, settled down slightly, and his gaze returned to Amelia's face.
He didn't want to waste time!
Get her out of here quickly!
......
James's reaction was satisfactory in Amelia's eyes.
She knew it - as soon as James heard she wasn't feeling well, he would definitely worry and be concerned.
People's mouths can lie, but instinctive reactions can't.
Amelia felt pleased inside, avoiding James's gaze, waiting for his apology.
Just then, from the corner of her eye, she caught sight of Mia waking up, and her lowered eyes brightened.
