Chapter 201
Chapter 201
Eve’s POV
"Luna May." I nodded slightly. "It sounds very nice."
"Does it sound good?" Luna smiled slightly and still kept her eyes on the road ahead. "I thought this name would make me a big star, but in the end, I ended up driving a taxi. Ha ha."
I followed her with a few weak chuckles, but in the next second, my expression turned cold.
"Luna, are you kidding me?"
"What's wrong?"
I stretched out my bloodless hand and pointed at the taxi license in front of me.
"The photo above... it's definitely you."
"Yeah, this is my car, so it has my professional qualification certificate on it. Is there any problem?" Luna wore a puzzled expression.
"Don't play dumb with me..." I coughed suddenly a few times, then took a deep breath. "Your professional qualification certificate is hanging here, which means this car really belongs to you... so who are you? Why is there a car in this city that belongs to you?"
"I don't understand." Luna shook her head. "Guest, do you usually chat like this with others?"
"How could a 'participant' possibly be brought here with a car?!"
Although it was somewhat laughable to talk about "reality" in this strange place, the existence of the woman in front of me was indeed beyond my comprehension.
I originally thought that those "locals" who were like walking corpses were all previous "participants." They'd stayed here for too long, so they'd gone crazy and lost their way.
But there was actually a person like Luna right in front of me...
Her behavior was very strange, but her mind was very clear.
She had her own property in this city.
"I really don't understand." Luna shook her head. "If you're deliberately causing trouble, guest, you'd better get off the vehicle as soon as possible."
I shook my head vigorously to keep myself as awake as possible, also hoping to ensure that what I saw before me wasn't an illusion through this method.
"Luna..." I shouted.
"What's wrong again?" The woman before me was no longer as polite as before, and her tone was filled with impatience.
"How many passengers can you take in a day when you drive a taxi?" I changed the subject and started chatting about daily life.
"I..." After hearing this, Luna was clearly stunned for a moment, as if she'd never thought about this question before. After pondering for a long time, she said, "You seem like my first guest today..."
"Then how many guests can you get in a week?" I asked again.
Luna felt that there was a long-hidden dark zone in her mind, which was gradually being torn apart by my one question after another.
"It seems that I... I haven't picked up any customers for a week..." Her expression began to darken, her eyes constantly moving as if she were lost in thought.
I realized that my questions were shaking her, so I continued to ask:
"What have you eaten this week? What did you drink? Where do you go after finishing work?"
"I..." "I..." Luna's expression gradually became panicked, and she was on the verge of collapse. "I haven't eaten for a long time... when there are no guests, I just keep stopping by the roadside..."
"You are by the roadside... how long did you stop?" Although my tone was flat, my hair stood on end, fearing to hear some strange answer.
A huge friction sound rang out, and Luna braked the car hard in the middle of the road.
Her lips trembled as she looked ahead, and her eyes had become somewhat different.
There was emotion in that eye, completely different from the walking corpses on the street.
"I've been parked by the roadside for two years!" She let out a loud cry and then burst into tears. "Oh my God... what's wrong with me?!"
"Two..." My throat quivered slightly and I swallowed hard. "You haven't eaten, drunk or slept. You've been parked by the roadside for two years?"
She stretched out her hands and took a look, only then did she understand.
"It's this car... when I saw this car in the city, I felt as if I were possessed..."
"Is there anything strange about this car?" I asked.
"This is the tool I rely on to make a living in the real world! How could I possibly see this car here..." Luna suddenly turned her head and only then did she notice my blood-stained clothes. "Are you injured?"
"It's okay..." I shook my head. "This injury doesn't matter... are you awake now?"
Luna's hands trembled as she examined my injuries. Only then did she realize that the surface of the wound had been roughly treated. The entire piece of flesh and blood had been scalded to pieces by the high temperature. Although the bleeding had stopped, the burn marks were very severe.
"You were so seriously injured... if we don't find medicine quickly..." After saying that, she choked up. "I almost forgot. There can't be any medicine here at all..."
"Yes, there are simply no conditions here for us to survive." I gazed dejectedly into the distance. "Luna, I don't have much time left. Could you do me a favor in the end?"
"You, you speak."
"Keep driving forward." I said. "I want to escape from here and take a look at the edge of this city."
Luna looked at me with a hint of sadness, knowing that it was basically a miracle that I could stay awake now.
"Okay, I'll take you to the edge of the city. You have to hold on."
She shifted back into gear and started the car again, trembling.
I leaned my head against the car window and watched the scenery gradually receding outside.
I coughed gently twice, feeling something in my throat pressing on my windpipe, making it extremely difficult for me to breathe.
When life was about to enter the countdown, what I saw wasn't a life review but those run-down and rapidly receding high-rise buildings.
I still remembered that day when I also got into a car and rushed to another city without hesitation.
I'd thought that by the time I got to Washington and the hearing was over, Vicky, Luke and I would be living a good life.
I was strong. Yes, I knew that, but I always hoped for a simple life.
I never expected...
On the deserted street, Luna was driving the car at full speed, and I bit my tongue hard to keep my consciousness clear.
It wasn't long before my mouth was filled with blood. Then I opened the car window and spat out a big mouthful of blood.
"Are you okay?" Luna asked anxiously.
"It's okay." I wiped my mouth and said softly. "I feel great now. I don't have to worry about 'staying alive.' I've never felt so relaxed these days."
The car sped forward in silence and drove for nearly another half an hour.
"Hey... are you still alive?" Luna slowed down the car, stretched out her right hand and kept shaking me. "We've reached the edge of the city. How are you going to escape?"
I used all my strength to turn my head and open my eyes, straining to look ahead. A few seconds later, my pupils gradually dilated.
Right in front of me was a highway toll booth. The sign on it was already rusty and the characters were unrecognizable.
Looking along the toll booth of the expressway, wide roads stretched forward one after another.
The roads crisscrossed and stretched on endlessly.
Far, far away, there were other tall buildings faintly visible.
"Turns out there's no edge at all here..." My lips moved slightly, and I was once again overwhelmed by the scene before me.
The words of Ram skull once rang slowly in my ears: "We are much more grand than 'religion.' We have a world!"
Yes, if this place wasn't a city at all but a world, how could one escape?
"Where are we going next?"
Luna turned her head to look at me, only to find me lying listlessly in my seat.
My eyes carried a hint of confusion, a hint of resentment, a hint of unwillingness, and I never closed my eyes until my death.
