CHAPTER 45
CHAPTER 45
DALTON
I have spent three days in anguish. Three days where my only companion has been fear.
Blair has not woken up for three days. Doctor Bassi determined that Blair fell down the stairs due to dizziness. Thanks to the moon, our baby was safe, but Blair still hasn't woken up.
The entire pack is praying for the well-being of their Luna.
I haven't left her side since the doctor allowed me back into the room. Nick, Mika, Deborah (who was my assistant at the lumber mill), Katherine, and Elliot were the ones who took care of me, bringing me food and such.
But still, I didn't want to leave Blair's side.
She still looked beautiful in bed, even with that horrible yellow hospital gown. Her blondish-brownish hair, which I love, is scattered all over the pillow. Her lips, for no apparent reason, are still red.
She is lying on her side, and her warm hand rests on mine, emanating that familiar warmth that makes you feel at home. At the moment I thought I lost her, I thought I had lost that warmth, but now I know that warmth is the only thing keeping me sane.
When the doctor told me that our child was fine, I almost jumped for joy, but I felt guilty knowing that the only reason our child survived was that they were the child of the bond, and pure alpha blood runs through their veins.
Being Blair the daughter of an alpha and a woman who was her mate, and I sharing the same situation, our unborn child carries pure blood in their veins. My child is strong enough to fight for their life and take care of their mother.
Blair's arm is covered with hospital tape, and a needle pierces her skin, supplying her with a serum containing enough proteins to keep her and our child strong. The room is also filled with typical hospital equipment.
There's a knock on the door. I mumble a "come in" loud enough for the person on the other side to hear.
"Sir, what you asked for is here," says one of the pups.
A boy whom I think is named Karl.
I extend my hand toward him, and he places a small silver box on it.
"Who did you get it from?"
"Deborah said she would settle it with you later," says the pup and leaves.
I open the small box and take out the ring I specially ordered for Blair, a moonstone ring. The stone appears white but has iridescent colors all over it. According to our beliefs, this stone brings stability. I take Blair's hand, the one without the engagement ring and our wedding band, and I place the ring on her middle finger.
After that, I give her a gentle kiss on her forehead and then hold her hand, focusing once again on her beautiful face and start talking to her as I do every night.
"Darling, you need to get better because our child and I need you. Maybe when you wake up, you won't want me by your side, but our child needs you, you know? He is a strong boy, he got that from you...
Without realizing it, I start nodding off in the chair until I succumb to sleep.
BLAIR
My head hurts, that's all I can think about. My head and my back hurt.
Also, I'm very hungry, and I need to use the bathroom. Yes, I think that sums up everything I want and have right now.
I try to get up, but my entire spine hurts. I think my spine hurts more than my head, to be honest. I slowly open my eyes, and the first thing I see is Dalton, sitting in a chair next to me, with his head in a very uncomfortable position, and he's asleep. What the hell happened? Where am I? How long have I been like this?
I inspect the room, and instantly, I know we're at home. Where was I before we got here? Oh yes, the memories come back. I was sitting on the stairs, and suddenly, I stood up and got dizzy. But why was I on the stairs in the first place?
Dalton. Elsa. Baby.
I quickly remove my hand from Dalton's, and it seems I do it too abruptly because Dalton wakes up abruptly, looking at me with an expression of disbelief as if he's experiencing the best thing in life. He tries to approach me, but I pull my body back before he can, and he notices because he stops moving.
"What are you doing here?" My voice comes out raspier and harsher than expected.
"You fell down the stairs," he says gently.
I fell. Oh God, my baby. Is something wrong with him?
"Don't worry, our little one is fine," he says, giving my hand a gentle squeeze.
At that moment, I react and remove my hand from his. I'm infinitely grateful for his help, but that doesn't change anything.
"I've been here by your side for three days."
"We're fine now, I don't think it's necessary for you to stay any longer," I say with a slightly harsh voice.
"Blair, you fell down the stairs. Honestly, right now I don't care if you want me here or not," he says calmly, which scares me a little. "I'll be here until I decide that you'll be fine on your own."
"I don't want you here. If anything happens to our child, I'll let you know." I refuse to back down.
"No, you don't know the shit I went through being here by your side.
Poor heart of mine, it just takes more blows.
"Well, if being here was so unpleasant for you, you didn't have to do it," I say angrily.
"No, not in that sense," he pauses. "In the sense that you were here, but I couldn't feel you. I didn't feel your soul, I didn't feel anything from you. It was like watching you die a little every day."
My heart suffers like some kind of small reconstruction.
Kiss him. Says my she-wolf.
And for a moment, I consider it, but then I gather my thoughts. And thank God, we're interrupted by a knock on the door.
"Come in," Dalton responds.
A woman in a nurse's uniform enters.
"Alpha, my Luna," she bows. "Doctor Bassi wants to speak with both of you."
Dalton turns to look at me as if seeking my approval.
"Tell him yes," I reply.
A few minutes pass in which Dalton and I only gaze into each other's eyes. I want him out of my life at this moment, to be honest. I want him to leave, but right now he's the only support I have in case something happens to my child.
"You can come visit us twice a week if you want," he sighs at my words.
"I know you don't want me here, Blair, but I couldn't forgive myself if something happened to you while I'm not around."
"Truthfully, I don't even want to see you," I say in a sad tone.
"And I know, really," his gaze avoids mine. "I promise I won't bother you, you'll only see me in the morning and at night."
"Mr. and Mrs. Black," says the doctor entering.
"Doctor Bassi," I say, trying to adjust myself to a better position, but the pain prevents me.
"My Luna, how are you feeling?" he says, pulling a chair up to the bed.
"My back hurts."
"That's normal. I'll give you something to ease the pain," he says with a smile. "What I wanted to discuss with you is about the baby."
"Is something wrong with him?" I ask fearfully.
"No, I just wanted to talk about the delivery and other things."
"Go ahead," Dalton says.
"Your child is pure alpha. Both parents are blood alphas, so the gestation period will be shorter because you, my Luna, are the alpha she-wolf.
Elsa, this could make my child the alpha of the pack by being the oldest."
"Will I give birth before any other woman who got pregnant around two months ago?" I ask, and I see that both of them realize my intentions at that moment.
"Yes, and from what I see, you'll have a very strong boy," he says with another smile.
THREE MONTHS LATER
"Being pregnant is beautiful, I won't deny it, but there are certain moments of the day when it's torture because of the fatigue," I say, bringing another grape to my lips.
"And I believe you, girl. I have a cousin who got pregnant with twins, let me tell you," Deborah says.
"It's an indescribable feeling," I walk down the aisle.
"Indescribable?" Deborah raises an eyebrow. "I need to get you a dictionary, girl," she shakes her head, and I laugh, but she keeps pushing the shopping cart.
"It's just a simple word," I say, eating more grapes.
"A word that most of the human population doesn't know," she replies. "Do you want more vegetables?"
"Yes, Bassi asked me to eat more vegetables. He says it's good for us," I put a hand on my belly.
During this time that had passed, I hadn't been able to get Dalton out of the house, and not exactly because I hadn't tried. We still lived under the same roof. During my recovery from my back, I won't deny that Dalton helped me a lot and kept his word. I only saw him at night and in the morning, and even then, sometimes.
"It was a strange relationship. We once tried to have dinner together and share the table, but there was such indifference on my part that the poor guy didn't even finish his dinner by the time he left. I just don't know how to face the situation, I know he's my husband and my mate, and I love him more than anything in this world, but every time I see him, I can't help but think that there's another pregnant woman somewhere else. Knowing that my child was going to be born earlier had made things less tense between us, but they still didn't change much.
Before the whole pack, Dalton and I continued to be their Luna and their Alpha, which hadn't changed. We attended pack events, but we didn't spend much time together during the events. I hadn't heard anything about Elsa, and honestly, I don't know if I would want to know anything.
Living under the same roof but without any physical contact was difficult. We were humans (well, technically). I was a four-month pregnant woman, full of hormones, and besides, he was my mate, and, well. He had kept his composure regarding that, but I won't deny it, smelling him, feeling him, and sometimes even hearing him had almost driven me to go and ask him to lose his composure, to rip my clothes off, mess up my hair, and make love to me, but thank God he had kept his sanity.
