CHAPTER 43

CHAPTER 43
DALTON

"Don't touch me," she says angrily.

"Blair, believe me, I wish things were different.

"But they're not!" she yells for the first time. "She's pregnant."

"Blair..." I try to speak, but once again, the words fail me.

"Since when have you known?" she asks.

I don't know what to answer.

"Since the wedding."

She covers her mouth with her hand and lets out a sob, allowing the tears to run down her face. I want to approach and comfort her, but I feel a lump in my throat so big that I feel like I'm choking, and a pain in my chest as if I'm having a heart attack.

"I always knew that Elsa wasn't finished at the wedding," she says between sobs. "But still, even though you cheated on me that day, I forgave you, moved on with our life, told myself that anyone can make a mistake and this..."

She shakes her head and falls silent.

"Blair, I know you're angry, but I promise you I will find a way to fix this," I say, approaching her.

"Don't touch me!" she says, moving away. "The worst part of all this is that I'm not angry, I'm disappointed, tired."

Her words shatter me into a thousand pieces, pieces that I'm sure I will never be able to put back together in my life.

"I'm tired of fighting for a place in your life," she says, letting more tears flow.

"You've always had a place in my life."

"Of course not, because if it were truly mine, I wouldn't have to fight for it," she says, poking my chest with her finger.

"I'm going to fix it."

"And how do you want to fix it?" she asks, angry again. "By having conjugal visits with both of us? By dividing our children between us? How? How?!"

Suddenly, Blair's eyes started to shine, a shine that I knew exceptionally well, I noticed her teeth were slightly elongated. God, she was transforming. My son.

"Blair..."

"What do you want?! Leave! Leave my house!" she says, even angrier.

"Blair... calm down," I say, raising my hands.

If Blair transforms, there's a great danger of her having a miscarriage. I don't want anything to happen to her or my child. I just want them to be safe. I would never forgive myself if something happened to them.

"I hate you, Dalton, I hate you," she says, and I see her eyes change color.

I approach her and hold her shoulders, but she starts hitting me to let go.

"Blair, you're transforming, you can hurt the baby, Blair," I say, holding her tighter in my arms.

"Let me go!" she shouts, and then she runs out of the kitchen towards the door.

"Blair, stop!" I walk behind her.

"When have we ever mattered to you?!" she says, slamming the door open.

"You've always mattered to me."

"Yeah, sure, I'm sure you were thinking of me while you got Elsa pregnant," I step outside and see her getting into the jeep.

I run to the door before she closes it.

"Get out of the car, Blair," I say, trying to sound calm.

"Why? Why do I matter to you now when I didn't before?"

"You've always mattered to me, Blair, but I don't want you to leave here and have an accident and something happens to you and my child."

"No, we were never anything to you. I realized that today," she says, crying again. "That no matter how much I try to love you, to give you everything to make you happy, you will never have even a small idea of how much I love you.

"I'm a mess of a person, Blair, but I love you," I say, looking her straight in the eyes. "That's why get out of the car. I'll leave if you want, I'll leave you alone, but let me go."

Without saying another word, Blair got out of the car. Her arm brushed against mine for the last time. I felt it, I knew it was true, it would be the last time our gazes would meet. It's hard to say goodbye to her like this, knowing that I want to kneel right now and beg her to stay, but it's even harder to know that she wants to leave.

And she entered the house again without saying anything to me, without a final word, without anything. She just closed the front door as she had closed the door to her heart, only this time it wouldn't be me who would open that door again.

I get into the jeep and close the door, start the engine, and my only companion from now on welcomes me.

If there's something that makes scars beautiful, it's that they are the mark of the pain you managed to overcome, the pain you were able to face, but the best thing is knowing that the pain is over, it's done. But in my case, the wound was just made and it would take a long time to heal if it ever would.

What is said, is said. It hurt and it will always hurt.

BLAIR

As soon as I closed the door, my body slid down against it until I reached the cold floor. The tears didn't stop running down my cheeks.

I was pregnant. I would have a child with Dalton, a child with my husband, with the love of my life, with the father of my child, and the worst part was that he knew all along, it wasn't new news, only the guilt started eating him up inside.

Everything I told him was true, I wasn't angry, I was disappointed and tired, tired of always giving more than I receive, of getting my hopes up for something only to end up disappointed. Without further ado, the tears started falling faster and harder.

I touched my still-flat belly. My child would never be acknowledged as the alpha of the pack, as Dalton Black's firstborn, he would never enjoy the privileges of being the alpha's eldest. That was so unfair because, no matter how you put it, the other child was the product of a fling, nothing more.

But it was just a simple baby, the ones who held the responsibility there were Dalton and that woman. That little one was not to blame for anything.

With my hand still on my belly, I said:

"Just let me be weak and cry for today, I promise you I'll be strong again tomorrow, for you."
