CHAPTER 42
CHAPTER 42
BLAIR
Everything was on the table, the box was already on the table. I just needed Dalton to come down with some excuse. I didn't feel like preparing dinner for Dalton per se, but I was very nervous about the news I needed to give him. And if I didn't tell him today, I would never tell him, so it had to be tonight.
I had thought about it a lot and also dramatized it a lot. When I found out, it was a shocking moment for me, but I couldn't say that I regretted it, far from it. He or she would be my flesh and blood, and no matter how young Dalton and I were, they would always have a place in my life, and I'm more than sure they would have a place in Dalton's life too.
But my big question had been how to tell Dalton everything. I loved him, yes, but I had a horrible fear of what might happen after those words came out of my mouth. It was a very stupid way to communicate such news, but still, I hid inside the kitchen closet when I heard Dalton coming down the first steps.
DALTON
I quickly descended the stairs, not even holding onto the handrail or anything. I just needed to reach her, she was everything to me in life, and if I had to let her go for her to have what she deserved, so be it. The moon goddess made a mistake giving her to me as a partner, but I would let her choose between being by my side after knowing everything about me or leaving.
Whatever her decision, I would support her, even in fact of letting me go.
I enter the kitchen, but it's empty, no one is in the kitchen. Although I smell Blair nearby, I'm about to move to look for her when something on the table catches my attention. It's a box with a bow on top. I approach the table slowly as if it were a strange object.
I open the box slowly and find a handwritten note that says:
"For my sweet husband on this day."
I remove the card and there's gift wrapping paper, but I also remove it and another card appears that says:
"The only thing better than having you as my husband."
I remove the card again, and there's more paper, so I remove it and there's another card, damn it.
It's that our child has you as a dad.
My whole body doesn't respond, I remove the last card and the paper forcefully, and I come face to face with the best and worst of my life: a small card that says:
"I love you."
And next to it, a positive pregnancy test.
Shit.
Shit and more shit. Fate is against me, and that's when my world shatters. This can't be happening, not with all the shit surrounding my life. That little one shouldn't bear the blame for my fucking mistakes.
And they will fall on him. Everything I did in my life, I always thought it wouldn't affect anyone but me, but I was wrong. It would affect the love of my life, it would affect my child. Everything I imagined would happen if Elsa's child was born, that child would be the alpha of my pack, not my child with Blair.
There was no going back this time, I couldn't get rid of either of them. I can't hide this anymore, I can't, I don't want to. They're not to blame for my fucking mistakes. If only there were a way for them not to be affected, I would take it without hesitation.
I can't keep hiding everything; I know I'm going to hurt her a lot with the truth, but if I keep going, I'll end up killing her with my lies. I had changed so much to keep my lie hidden, I had hidden my principles, I had thrown away what my mother taught me without realizing it because of a fucking lust. My mother used to say that a gentleman only lied to a lady to surprise her. What a great gentleman I am, I'm a mess of a person.
A hand rests on my shoulder, and for the first time in a long time, I feel an immense desire to cry.
"Dalton?" her sweet voice.
I turn my face with all the courage in my body.
"We're going to be parents, Dalton," she says with a tone of happiness, but I sense her fear.
I open and close my mouth to find the words, but I can't. My brain simply doesn't work.
"I can't," I whisper.
"What?" her face changes instantly.
"I can't, Blair," I tell her in a hoarse voice. "I can't."
I turn my face away because I can't look at her anymore, I don't dare to do it. I'll sound like a coward, but I can't.
Blair takes my face in her hands and makes me look at her.
"My love, we'll be fine. I know we're young to have children, but..."
And still, above all, she tries to find a way to help me, to make me feel better, to find the silver lining in things. I know Blair will be an excellent mother to our child, but me? Someone who, because of lust, now has his life completely divided into two.
"I can't," I say, closing my eyes.
"We'll be fine, we'll be good parents, I'm sure," she says on the verge of tears.
"No, Blair, we won't be fine.
"Why? Why won't we be fine?" she says, now concerned.
I get lost in those beautiful eyes that once captivated me in a supernatural way, eyes that I'm about to make shed tears because of me.
"I love you," I say, caressing her cheek.
"Dalton...
"Elsa is pregnant," I interrupt her before she says anything else.
Her face transforms monumentally, it's no longer that flushed face that looked at me with love, now it's a cold face that has put up a wall again.
"What?" she removes her hands from my chest.
"I heard you the first time," I say, cutting her off.
I remain silent, waiting for her reaction.
"Is it... your...?" her voice trembles.
"Yes," I say, cutting her off because I know exactly what she's referring to.
Without saying anything more, I hear her finally release the tears, she takes a few steps back until she reaches the table, she wobbles a bit, and I immediately approach her to hold her, but she pushes me away.
