Chapter 101

The soft, golden glow of the afternoon sun streamed through the large windows of the secluded countryside home that Dominic and Ava now called theirs. The air was fresh, far from the polluted streets and suffocating tension of the city, and a deep, peaceful quiet settled over the property. It was the kind of silence Dominic had never known in his life of chaos and violence, and yet, here, with Ava beside him and the arrival of their child just weeks away, it felt right.

Dominic sat in the garden, a small cup of coffee growing cold in his hands. His gaze wandered over the rolling hills that stretched endlessly in the distance, the fields bathed in the soft warmth of early autumn. The house—a charming, renovated farmhouse—stood behind him, a testament to the new life they were building. It was far removed from the city’s underworld, from the empire he had ruled, and from the darkness he had carried within him for so many years.

Ava appeared at the edge of the porch, her belly full with the weight of their unborn child, her face glowing with contentment. She moved with a calm grace, a peacefulness that Dominic had never seen in her before. The violence and fear that had once surrounded their lives were gone, and for the first time, they were truly free to be together without the shadow of his past hanging over them.

“You’ve been sitting out here for a while,” Ava said with a soft smile, walking slowly toward him, her hand resting protectively on her belly. “Are you going to come inside, or are you planning on staring at those hills all day?”

Dominic chuckled, setting the coffee cup aside and standing to meet her. His hand slipped around her waist, pulling her gently against him as he kissed her forehead. “I’m just thinking. It’s nice to have something peaceful to look at.”

Ava’s smile softened as she looked up at him, her eyes reflecting the warmth of their shared happiness. “I think you’re still getting used to the quiet.”

“Maybe,” Dominic admitted, his voice low as he gazed out over the fields again. “It’s strange not having the city noise, not hearing sirens or dealing with problems every minute of the day.”

“You’ll get used to it,” Ava teased gently. “I’m sure once the baby comes, we’ll have plenty of noise to fill the silence.”

Dominic smiled, but his mind drifted to the life they had left behind. It had been months since the final battle with Alex, and true to his word, Dominic had retired from the violent aspects of his empire. He had cut ties with the dangerous operations—the gunrunning, the drug trade, the dealings with corrupt officials—and focused his energy on legitimate business ventures. The underworld no longer held sway over his life. For the first time in years, he wasn’t looking over his shoulder, waiting for the next threat.

But letting go of the man he had been hadn’t been easy.

There were still moments when the old instincts kicked in, when his mind snapped back to the cold, calculated violence that had once been second nature to him. He had spent years surviving in a world where brutality and power were the only currency that mattered, and sometimes, it felt like that darkness would always be a part of him. But then, he would look at Ava—at the life growing inside her, at the love they had built together—and it was enough to quiet those instincts.

Ava had transformed him, not by forcing him to change, but by showing him that he didn’t have to live in that world anymore. She had given him something worth fighting for, something greater than power or control.

A family.

“How are you feeling?” Dominic asked, his hand resting gently on her belly, feeling the slight movement of their child.

Ava smiled, her eyes softening as she felt the baby kick. “Tired, but happy. I think he’s going to be a handful.”

Dominic laughed softly, his heart swelling with love for her. “He’ll be perfect. Just like his mother.”

Ava leaned against him, her head resting on his shoulder. “I never thought we’d get here, you know. After everything... I didn’t think peace like this was possible.”

Dominic’s expression darkened slightly, memories of the battles they had fought and the blood they had spilled flashing through his mind. But those memories no longer held the power they once had. They were just echoes now, fading into the past.

“I didn’t think so either,” he admitted quietly. “But you made me believe it was possible. You’re the reason I’m standing here, Ava. The reason I’ve let go of all that.”

Ava looked up at him, her eyes filled with love and pride. “You’ve changed so much, Dominic. You’ve given us both a new life.”

Dominic shook his head slightly. “You gave me that life. You and this baby. I couldn’t have done it without you.”

Ava’s hand slid up to cup his cheek, her touch warm and reassuring. “We did it together.”

They stood like that for a long moment, holding each other in the soft light of the setting sun, their hearts filled with the knowledge that they had survived the worst and come out stronger on the other side.

Later that evening, Dominic sat in the living room, watching as Ava carefully arranged baby clothes in a drawer. The nursery was nearly finished—soft pastel colors, a crib by the window, and shelves lined with children’s books and toys. It was a far cry from the world of steel and shadows that Dominic had once known. And yet, it felt like home.

As he watched Ava, his thoughts drifted to the man he had been. The ruthless leader of a criminal empire, feared and respected by all who crossed his path. He had built that life out of necessity, out of survival. But it had cost him. It had taken parts of his soul, chipped away at him piece by piece, until all that was left was violence and control.

And then Ava had come into his life.

She had been a reminder that there was still light in the world, that there was still love, even in the darkest places. She had pulled him out of the shadows, showed him that he didn’t have to be that man anymore. That he could be something more.

As he watched her now, so full of life and hope, Dominic realized just how far he had come. The man he had been was gone, left behind in the ruins of the city and the violence that had once defined him. Now, he was a husband, a father. And for the first time, he was at peace with that.

Ava finished folding the last of the baby clothes and turned to him, her eyes sparkling with happiness. “I think we’re ready.”

Dominic smiled, standing and crossing the room to pull her into his arms. “We’re more than ready.”

Ava rested her head against his chest, her voice soft. “Are you happy?”

Dominic kissed the top of her head, holding her close. “I’ve never been happier.”

And it was true. The life they had now was more than he had ever dreamed possible. He had built an empire, ruled a city, and won countless battles. But none of that compared to the peace he had found here, with Ava and their child.

This was his new beginning.
