Chapter 100
The sun was just beginning to rise, casting a pale light over the city as Dominic stood in his office, overlooking the skyline. The weight of the previous night’s events still hung heavy on his shoulders. The mansion was quiet now, eerily so after the chaos that had unfolded just hours before. Alex was dead, the cartel dismantled, and the war that had plagued his life for months was finally over.
But as Dominic stared out at the city he had ruled for so long, a different kind of battle was taking shape within him.
Behind him, Lucas entered the room, moving with the quiet efficiency that came from years of working at Dominic’s side. His face was etched with exhaustion, but there was a calmness in his eyes that hadn’t been there in a long time.
“We’ve cleaned up most of the mess,” Lucas said, his voice low. “The rest of Alex’s men are either in hiding or already dealt with. There won’t be any more retaliation.”
Dominic nodded, though his gaze didn’t leave the window. “And the other operations?”
Lucas shifted slightly. “We’re still running most of the territories, but a few of the more... volatile business partners are getting nervous. They’re not sure what happens next.”
Dominic turned away from the window, his expression hardening. “That’s because things are going to change.”
Lucas raised an eyebrow, waiting for Dominic to continue.
“I’m shutting down the operations that pose the biggest risk,” Dominic said, his voice firm. “No more gunrunning, no more drug distribution. Those parts of the business are done.”
Lucas blinked in surprise. “You’re serious?”
“I am,” Dominic replied, his tone unyielding. “The empire we built... it’s not sustainable. Not for the life I want now.”
Lucas was silent for a moment, processing the weight of Dominic’s words. They had built this empire together, piece by piece, through years of blood, sweat, and sacrifice. And now, Dominic was prepared to dismantle parts of it, to walk away from the very thing that had defined him for so long.
“You sure about this?” Lucas finally asked. “There’ll be backlash. Some of the men won’t be happy.”
Dominic met Lucas’s gaze, his eyes cold but resolute. “Let them be unhappy. I’m done with the blood and violence. I’ve got a family to think about now.”
Lucas nodded, the respect for Dominic’s decision clear in his expression. He had always known Dominic was different from the others—more calculating, more ruthless when he needed to be, but also a man with a sense of loyalty and purpose. If Dominic was ready to leave this life behind, Lucas would follow him.
“I’ll make the calls,” Lucas said quietly. “We’ll start winding things down.”
“Good,” Dominic replied. “And Lucas... if anyone tries to push back, you remind them who’s still in charge. This transition will be smooth, or it’ll be bloody.”
Lucas smirked, his old fire returning for just a moment. “Understood, boss.”
As Lucas turned to leave, Dominic’s thoughts drifted to Ava. She was the reason for all of this—the reason he had fought so hard, the reason he had survived, the reason he was ready to change. He had promised her a future free from violence, a life where they could raise their child in peace. And now, for the first time, that future seemed within reach.
Ava stood in the kitchen, her hands wrapped around a warm cup of tea, her mind still swirling from the events of the night before. The house was quiet, save for the occasional sound of footsteps from the security team still stationed outside. The air felt different now—lighter, less oppressive. But the unease still lingered in her chest, a remnant of the fear that had haunted them for so long.
When she heard Dominic’s footsteps behind her, she turned, offering him a tired smile. “You’re back.”
Dominic crossed the room, his face softening as he saw her. He gently brushed a strand of hair behind her ear, his hand lingering at her cheek. “Yeah, I’m here.”
Ava placed her cup on the counter, her eyes searching his face. “It’s really over, isn’t it? Alex... the cartel...”
Dominic nodded, his voice low but firm. “It’s over. Alex is dead. His men are either gone or in hiding. There won’t be any more threats from them.”
Ava let out a shaky breath, her shoulders relaxing just a bit. “I can hardly believe it. After everything...”
Dominic wrapped his arms around her, pulling her close. She leaned into him, her head resting against his chest, listening to the steady beat of his heart. For the first time in months, they weren’t bracing for the next fight. For the first time, there was peace.
But Ava wasn’t naïve. She knew that the world they had lived in wasn’t something they could simply walk away from. There would always be dangers, always be people looking to fill the void that Alex’s death had left behind.
“I’m glad it’s over,” Ava said softly, her voice muffled against his chest. “But... I can’t help but worry. There’s always someone else, isn’t there? Someone waiting to take his place.”
Dominic’s grip on her tightened slightly, but he remained calm. “Not this time,” he said, his voice steady. “I’m ending it, Ava. I’m shutting down the parts of the business that bring in the most risk. No more guns. No more drugs. No more violence.”
Ava pulled back slightly, looking up at him in surprise. “You’re really going to walk away from all of that?”
“I’m not walking away completely,” Dominic admitted. “There are parts of the empire I can still run—legitimate businesses, things that don’t put us in danger. But the parts that put you and our child at risk... those are done.”
Ava’s eyes filled with emotion as she took in his words. This was what she had hoped for, what she had dreamed of, but a part of her had always feared that Dominic wouldn’t be able to let go of the power and control that had defined his life for so long.
“And what about the people who won’t be happy with that?” Ava asked, her voice tinged with concern. “Won’t they try to come after you?”
“They can try,” Dominic replied, his voice firm. “But I’ll handle it. You don’t need to worry about that anymore.”
Ava studied his face, searching for any hint of doubt, but there was none. Dominic had made his decision, and for the first time, she truly believed that they could have the life they had talked about—free from the constant threat of violence.
She rested her hand on her belly, feeling the gentle flutter of the baby inside her. “I want to believe that. I do. But after everything we’ve been through... it’s hard to trust that it’s really over.”
Dominic gently took her hand, his eyes softening. “I know it’s hard. And I know it won’t be easy. But I promise you, Ava, I’m doing this for us. For our child. I’ll tear down whatever I have to, cut ties with whoever I need to, but I won’t let this world touch you or our family ever again.”
Ava’s eyes filled with tears, but this time, they weren’t from fear. They were from hope. She had seen Dominic’s darkness, the violence he was capable of, but she had also seen his strength, his love, and his desire to change. And now, she believed that he could.
She leaned up, pressing a soft kiss to his lips. “I believe you,” she whispered.
Dominic held her close, his heart swelling with the love he felt for her. For their child. For the life they could finally begin building together. The worst was behind them, and though the road ahead would still have its challenges, they were stronger now—strong enough to face whatever came next.
