Chapter 44

Chapter 44
Nyra's POV

This was the happiest I had ever seen Fiona; she wore a smile on her face throughout the day and especially now that she reached for the candle and lit it.

She made the dishes herself for the first time since I came to live here with her and that too varieties of them. Turns out Ethan was more important than she defined him to be.

Meanwhile, as Fiona prepared for her boyfriend's arrival, I had trouble putting my thoughts straight. I had been feeling strange since yesterday, and it made me uneasy.

Suddenly, the doorbell interrupted my thoughts.

“He's here," she squealed and raced towards the door while I sat still on the dinner table.

Suddenly, the smell of sander wood filled the room, my eyes darted towards this source and there he was.

All tall and with a defined statue, he did have dark hair and then his eyes and the strong scent coming from him was very inhuman.

“Tina meets Ethan, Ethan, Tina," she smiled as she hooked her arm around his.

When my eyes met him, he lingered more than usual before looking towards Fiona.

They both approached the dinner table.

“It's nice to meet you," he stretched his hands, and I took it.

“It's nice to meet you too," I responded.

“We are so happy to have you. Tina here has been wanting to meet with you," she kept on smiling, but I frowned at her last statement.

“I have?” I arched my brow as I watched her draw on a chair for him to sit at the dinner table before sitting as well.

“It's my pleasure and I like the dinner setting," his deep voice remarked, which excited Fiona.

“Sure, you do,” she touched his cheeks with her thumb. Fiona was nothing less than obsessed with this fishy man.

“Now first things first, I need you to try out the beef sauce and the potatoes", reaching for the spoon and fork and fed some food to Ethan, which he took and chewed on it slowly.

“How does it taste?” she asked.

“Wow, it feels like I'm in a restaurant," he replied with a smile which I thought was fake.

"I'll take that as a compliment, and I should add some gravy to this," she stood up.

“And I think I have one I used earlier, and it's just upstairs... I'll go get it”

“Eat up," she whispered and giggled in his ear before leaving.

The second Fiona stood up and headed up the stairs. There was a small silence between us before he spoke up.

“I know what you are," as he placed the fork on the table, “and I know your name is not Tina.”

“Whatever I am, my lucky guess is that the same goes for you, and how can you tell that's not my name?" I took another forkful of potatoes. I knew his scent wasn't ordinary, nor was his aura and the way he looked.

“I'm sure even a newborn wolf knows a humane name when they hear one.”

To be perfectly created, to be human.

Ignoring what he said, I resorted.

“Wolves are not supposed to be anywhere human’s” romantically.

The union created havoc, according to what I heard, so it was best they weren't aware of our existence at all.

“Well, I am not bound by that law anymore," he said as he picked up his fork again to stab at his beef.

“Why did you leave?”

His small pause made me realize how little of a casual question that was to him, but he only cleared his throat and continued beef stabbing.

“We both know there's no union in the pack anymore, just blood, lust and war…. No one wants that.”

“So, you ran," I finished, obviously testing his patience more than necessary.

I didn't like the idea that Fiona might be involved with a wolf. Perhaps he was just using her and lying to her like I did, having to deal with what Brad put her through was enough.

“No, I left, willingly, and trust me when I say that I have been living my best life.”

Best life?

I didn't think that a wolf could easily blend with humans. I thought of the lies I had told to Fiona and some other things I had to control.

“By best life, you mean owning these mystical labs or is that where you can practice inhumane experimentations”, I accused.

“I see she told you about the artifacts." He ignored my petty comments, but I pushed.

“I don't trust you, Ethan.”

He gave a short silence before he turned to me.

“For a werewolf you sure think like a human.”

I didn't know if that was a compliment, so I said nothing more till he added.

“My mother practiced witchcraft; I couldn't leave all her enchanted items behind.”

“Fair enough," I replied, “how long have you been living here?”

“Ten years, I think fifteen… totally depends on who's counting.”

I was taken aback, no wonder he had this reassurance of a stable relationship here, he had built trust in the human world, and it was all he ever needed.

“And no one knows you're a wolf?” I asked as I tried to hide how stunned I was.

“I think I would be burning on a stick in a bonfire if a handful of people found out that a wolf had created a home here.”

As I opened my mouth to say something, I heard Fiona's footsteps.

“Oh my god, you guys are bonding already," she squealed, then placed the gravy on the table.

“Yeah, I'm just telling her that she can come to my hospital anytime she feels sick," Ethan replied, not even crossing a new cooperative glare.

“Awwwwn, didn't I tell you Tina… Ethan is such a darling, and isn't it Ravens hospital?”

Darling?

More like a noble liar. I almost scoffed.

But throughout the meal, he made sure not to share glances with me and, merely watching him blend with Fiona, I questioned how long I could disguise myself as a human. And for the first time, I wondered if my mask would hold when the monster sitting across from me had already begun to tear at its seams.
