Chapter 36

Chapter 36
Nyra's POV

I did expect that I would be screened at least. No one was going to give me leverage even if I knew Fiona might be there and as soon as she mentioned it, I was tagging along with her.

Ella led me to a boardroom, and when I stepped in, I could see so many fashionistas, the mixture of colours of fabric and the way they all blended the attire they were putting on.

It was satisfying to stand before people who saw the same vision as you.

I watched Ella bow at them before taking her leave. I was alone now with more than five fashion experts to judge the little knowledge I knew. My eyes searched for Fiona, but I doubted she would be there.

Nervously, I brushed my palm against my skirt before placing them by my side to stand upright. If it was anything I had to display, it was confidence.

“Good morning, my name is Tina Fisher," I said curtly, slightly bowing.

Relieved that I hadn't forgotten my lies, though there was a small pause in the room before they all glanced at the file before them, then at me.

“Can you tell us a bit more about yourself?” one spoke.

‘I am a wanted wolf who has escaped the clutches of a treacherous Alpha and has come here to start afresh…’ I thought to myself, hoping that I would never get found out under any circumstances.

“Well, there is not much to know. I'm pretty much the ordinary girl who fell in love with fashion and wants to become an expert in one," I replied.

Everyone nodded slowly in agreement with what I knew nothing about and just immediately one of the women tilted her head.

“I like your style this morning. It's creative," the woman held a disturbing smirk and a stare that was holding unto my gaze.

I rubbed my palm against my arm for friction.

“Thank you, ma’am,” trying my best not to miss a word and thanking the heavens that I chose a blend that didn't go unnoticed.

“And actually, I just usually mix styles every morning and this just happens to be one of my casual wears”.

Saying more confidently, since I could tell it was what she needed from me.

“This is unique," she nodded softly, with a hint of impressiveness. “Not everyone knows how to blend colours and this is exactly what we need for this company.”

I got excited but contained it by clenching my fist.

“Don't conclude just yet," someone cut in. “We still need her to be more practical. We can't judge her from what she wears on a formal day”.

My heart skipped a beat when I watched the tall man rise from where he sat and headed towards a separate table where I could see so many fabrics. I hadn't noticed them until he pulled them out and ordered the mannequin.

“These are fabrics of different kinds," he stated as he signalled me to come forward. “That can be used to style this mannequin to whichever style you want.”

She paused and glared at me if I had any questions, but I remained still and could only study the colours and make out the kind of style I would be needing to impress them.

“As you can see, there are varieties of which you can choose from. The interview is to make us see your potential and the job is yours.”

He said finally before moving over to where he sat.

I looked at the fabrics like they were speaking to me, without wasting much time, I took the green one and tied it around the mannequin and then a brown one around the waist, reaching for a black linen, I tied it around the head like a turban and added some more brown around the sleeve, I studied the mannequin and was satisfied, I stepped back, and they all stared at what I had designed as well.

After a long pause,

“A moment please,” the man cleared his throat and said before turning away from me.

I gave a small nod and gave them space to gather and talk, their whispers made my knees weak and I battled.

“Um, Tina.” The lady addressed me again. “I think this work has a lot of potential in it. I really think you put in that E for effort, and if you could resume work today, then you would be very much hired.”

I thought I had heard something else, but I didn't. A smile came across my face.

“Really? Am I hired?”

The lady nodded and smiled, reaching my hands for a shake. They all took it warmly.

I closed the door of the boardroom behind me and there was Ella seated with legs crossed, waiting for me.

I walked up to her since she was deeply engrossed in her phone.

“Hey," I said softly, and suddenly she snapped her head towards where I stood.

“Oh Tina, how did it go?” rising up from where she sat.

I sighed slowly, her hands flew over to her mouth and I could tell she was beginning to think otherwise.

“Oh, my goodness….

“I got the job," I cut into her words and her almost sad expression shifted.

“Really, oh my God Tina, you almost had me?”

“They love my style.”

“Of course, they do. I mean who wouldn't?” She squealed, “I am so happy for you.”

“Thank you," I said, and was about to say more when another voice cut in, “Congratulations."

I turned to find the voice and there was the guy from earlier who had spoiled coffee all over my clothes.

I gave a stiff smile as soon as I recognized him. I could smell him, and it was like gingerbread. He got closer and had a warning smile on his face.

“Oh, thank you,” I replied curtly.

“I was over there and couldn't help but eavesdrop on the conversation. I'm glad you're working with us.”

He gave his hands away for a shake and I took it.

“It's a pleasure”

“Sorry we got off on a rough start.”

“Oh no, it's fine,” knowing well enough, he was talking about the coffee episode.

“Great, means I could take you out for coffee.”

Coffee?

I laughed softly.

“I think I've had more than one coffee for one day.”

He laughed as well and suggested, “Lunch then.”

With that, I glanced at Ella, and she was already giggling. At this point, I knew I couldn't say no.

There was a tension between us and not to mention how Ella left immediately, leaving me to say no other words than yes, yet even as the word left my lips, a strange shiver crawled down my spine, his gingerbread scent twisting into something darker, and I realised with a jolt that this invitation might not be as harmless as it seemed.
