Chapter 35
Chapter 35
Rowan's POV
I searched the room with my eyes.
The party had been nerve breaking since all I had to do was to sore my eyes with the sight of different ladies from different places.
This was what the elders wanted, choosing a Luna from the varieties here, though it gave me a strange feeling that they were convinced that a random pick would be beneficial to the future of the pack. I had to make a choice to go along with the plan.
I took a glass of wine from the waitress and took everything all in at once, the music and the chatter.
Everything seemed to be going fine till Lucan arrived. I tried to shake off the uneasy feeling I felt each time I recalled him asking for Nyra.
Possible questions like what he needed her for, ran through my head and even as he had taken his leave, I still felt weighed down.
Skimming my eyes through the crowd to distract myself, I had noticed not only did Alpha Lucan had left, but, strangely, I could not find Ronan anywhere. I felt uneasy and suspicious.
I slipped through the side doors leading to the corridors hoping none of the elders had seen me. I had met the girls and all of them could make a perfect Luna, but not a perfect match for me. My mind still lingered onto Nyra, which was normal since she was my mate that I had lost.
Moving over to the left side of the corridor, I caught a glimpse of Rowan and waited till he approached me.
Attempting to brush past me, I was fast enough to grab him by the arm and whisper
“I see you got yourself busy in other places besides the party.”
Locking eyes with him, so I notice his change of expression in some way,
Ronan placed his hands over mine and peeled my grip off of him, with a growing smirk on his face.
“And I see you got yourself busy with my movements aside from your future mate's,” he replied.
There were more than enough times that Ronan had made jokes about the ceremony. Of course, it was a shitty idea, but it was for the elders and nothing more. If that wasn't the case, then I would not have been able to stand being around so many women all at once.
Not to mention he was the reason for everything happening now.
“Where are you coming from, Ronan?” I tried to sound less controlling, though I knew he would not take it seriously even when I did.
He smiled at me, patting me by the arm.
“Be rest assured it's not a place you should be afraid of,” he said.
I believed him. I believe in the part where he mentioned taking over the throne, Ronan was greedy to that fault and jealousy had consumed every part of him.
I watched him leave, knowing well enough that he was hiding something, something I needed to find out for the safety of the pack.
Ronan had a reputation for acting, rebelling and doing what he did concerning Nyra proved that he was always going to be what he was.
Heading down the stairs, I looked over to the table I was standing beside, holding firmly, the glass of wine they had served.
Almost immediately. I caught a glimpse of some of the elders, and the look on their faces, it was obvious that they were not happy. Especially with me.
“Greetings Rowan…” one of them said out loud. I knew the look on his face, it was out of spite, regardless, I smiled warmly,
“Hope you are enjoying the evening,” hoping my gesture would help them calm down.
“We sure are,” another replied curtly before I heard someone clearing his throat.
“What is the purpose, though, if we do not wind up with a new mate?”
Taking deep breaths, I swallowed the small anger that threatened to burst out. I had had enough of the elders telling me to do it, but I chose composure and gave a small smile instead.
“I assure you that the ladies here are well fit to be Luna…”
“And.” Someone cut me off, stirring my anger once again.
I glared at the elders that were gathered with a frown,
“And I shall take my time to choose. The pack does not only need a Luna, but a nurturing one,” I stated loud and clear, trying to take my leave, but the voice of another stopped me in my tracks.
“And I should remind you that we do not have time to waste and looking for a perfect Luna would be a perfect waste of time.”
“We only need someone to represent, for the benefit of the pack.”
“Right….
Their words filled me like rushing water filling a jar. I was the alpha, and I was responsible enough not to be controlled by anyone, and with that thought, I snapped.
“And should I remind you that you are speaking to the alpha of this pack?” I could feel my canines flashing as I spoke, and I smelt the fear as they were taken aback.
“Organizing this was more than enough respect to each and every member of the council,” I continued to say, instilling the fear they had long been asking for, and now I doubted that it would say anything more about the matter.
“And while I am aware that it is solemnly my brother’s fault that we are without a Luna, I am willing to take full responsibility but…” placing the glass of wine back on the table.
“If I say I will not choose from these girls you have brought.”
I studied them closely before saying in a dismissive manner.
“Then I will not.” Pausing for them to say something else, but instead they responded with their silence.
I took my leave from the ceremony, deciding that what happened thereafter here held less or no concern for me; if they wanted a Luna for the pack, then they were free to choose themselves, but deep down, I already sensed the shadows of a betrayal rising, a storm that might destroy everything before dawn.
