Chapter 184 At the Edge of Certainty
Chapter 184 At the Edge of Certainty
“I … I just wanted to make a good impression, Kenn,” I whispered.
Kenn chuckled, a laugh that sounded very crisp and sincere. He pulled me a little closer until I could smell the masculine scent of his body.
“You’ve already made a very deep impression for a long time, Frel. Now, would you like to dance with me for a moment? Barefoot, with only you, me, and this candlelight.”
He waited for my answer. I smiled widely, my nervousness slowly melting away, replaced by overflowing happiness.
I placed my hand on his shoulder, feeling the smooth fabric of his suit beneath my palm.
“Of course, Kenn,” I replied with a sweet smile
We moved slowly in simple dance steps. Even without the piano music he had played earlier, my racing heartbeat seemed to become the rhythm that accompanied our movements.
Under the glow of twinkling lights and the night sky, I felt as if the world had stopped spinning, leaving space only for the two of us.
Silence immediately fell after our dance steps ended. I wanted to look into Kenn’s eyes, but an overwhelming nervousness still controlled me.
“Why do you keep looking down?” Kenn murmured softly, breaking the silence between us.
“Are you still sad?” Kenn suddenly asked.
That question made me look up reflexively. I frowned, not immediately understanding where he was going with it.
“Sad?” I repeated in confusion. “Sad about what?” I asked softly.
“About the person who caused the accident.”
I swallowed hard. I understood what he was talking about, but I hadn’t expected Kenn to bring it up so suddenly. For days, no one had dared to discuss it. They all chose to stay silent to protect my feelings, including Dara’s family.
“Why are you talking about it now? I’m trying to forget it,” I said bitterly. “Isn’t tonight supposed to be a peaceful night for us?”
Kenn fell silent for a moment, his gaze locked on my movements that were starting to become restless. “Forgive me, Frel. I didn’t mean to ruin the calm of this night,” he replied in a low voice. “It’s just that I can still see that burden in your eyes even when you smile.”
I took a deep breath, then slowly let it out while shaking my head gently.
“I’m just confused, Kenn.” I lowered my head again. “I don’t know whether I should feel hatred or pity,” I continued. “Those feelings are mixed together in my chest, and it’s suffocating.”
Slowly, his fingers lifted my chin, forcing me to meet the pair of dark eyes in front of me. Worry was clearly etched on his face.
“Confused about what? You can tell me everything. I’m not forcing you, I just don’t want you to carry this burden alone. Tell me what’s on your mind,” he pleaded. “Don’t keep it all to yourself, Frel. I’m here to listen.”
I studied Kenn’s face, searching for sincerity there. Should I say it?
“Until now,” I began hesitantly, “I still don’t understand what Farah was thinking. Why was she so reckless to do all that without thinking about the consequences for herself? Is love really that blind, Kenn? Can love turn someone into someone that cruel?” my voice began to tremble. “How can someone have the heart to destroy another person’s life for their own obsession?”
Kenn fell silent as he looked at me. His hand rose, tracing my cheek with the back of his finger. “Yes. I might even be able to do the same if someone hurt you or deliberately tried to separate us. Love can indeed become a reason for everything, good or bad,” he replied softly. “The line between affection and madness is sometimes very thin.”
“What?” My voice caught. “So, you’re justifying Farah’s actions? You think hurting others is normal if it’s in the name of love? I never thought you would think like that, Kenn.”
“Frel.” His voice called me with a firmness that still felt gentle.
Both of his hands moved to hold my shoulders, asking me to listen carefully.
“I’m not saying that what Farah did was right. I just want to say that there is no certainty about what will happen to us when something precious is taken away by someone. The difference lies only in how much logic we use. Farah did that because her emotions spoke without involving common sense.”
He was still watching me, but now the light in his eyes had turned sorrowful. “When you chose Kevan back then, I still remembered my common sense and chose to follow your wishes. But later, I’m not sure I’ll be able to use logic if I have to lose you once again. I might do something even crazier than Farah. Because for me, losing you is the end of my world, Frel.”
I blinked, my eyes starting to cloud with tears, trying to keep them from falling. I felt Kenn close the distance between us, wrapping me in a calm, quiet embrace.
“I’m sorry if my words scared you,” he whispered as he tightened his hold. “Sometimes, for the sake of love, someone can do anything beyond logic, Frel,” Kenn whispered in my ear, breaking the silence of the night.
“Like what Mrs. Viona did to my mother, right? She abandoned her own best friend just to get my father’s love. Is that what you mean by love beyond logic too?”
Suddenly, Kenn held me tighter. My tears spilled onto his chest.
“I don’t know what Mrs. Viona has ever told you, but if it is something that deserves to be kept secret, never tell it to anyone. Not even to me.” He stroked my hair affectionately. “Keep it as a secret that doesn’t need to hurt you any further.”
I nodded through the increasingly heavy flow of tears. Kenn released our embrace, but his gaze still showed deep concern.
“Can we talk about something else? I don’t want you to keep crying. I want the cheerful Frel, not this very whiny girl in front of me.”
I pouted, though in the end I nodded as well. How could it be that after Kenn made me feel like I was floating, the next second he dropped me to the bottom of the sea with the sharpness of his words?
“You always manage to ruin a romantic mood with your teasing,” I muttered softly.
He just looked at me, then curved his lips into a restrained smile. “But at least it managed to make you stop crying, right?” he teased.
Kenn raised his hand to wipe my tears. “This may not be the right time, but I don’t want to lose you again. I’ve been patient enough all this time, Frel.”
Then he gently took my palm and held it between both of his hands, making my heart race.
“I’m the type of guy who has trouble expressing his feelings. I tend to be stiff and cold. I’m not good at putting together sweet words like other guys. I’m sure you already know my true feelings by now.”
I saw Kenn clear his throat repeatedly and moisten his lips. He looked extremely nervous.
