Chapter 38: The Ring Tightens
Chapter 38: The Ring Tightens
Jack yanked a rag from the trailer table, Reggie's threat that "he's mine if you slip" still buzzing in his ears. Blood dripped from the cut Lisa had made, his arm red and stinging sharp. He snarled at her, "Stay put," his voice low and rough as he wrapped the rag tight around his wound. Lisa shrank back, her body bruised, pink hair wild, knife gone, trembling hard. Tim tugged his hair, which was sticky with sweat. Jack's words "trust me" and "mine," Lisa's accusation of "he beat me," the gun, and now Reggie's call—the trap was closing fast. Jack grabbed a rope from a drawer and tied her wrists quickly.
"No more games," he growled, locking her to a chair with a tight knot, the chair creaking loudly under the pressure.
Tim kicked the couch, springs groaning beneath his foot. "Games? You're tying her up now? I want the truth, Jack!" His heart was thudding hard. Four months out of prison, Jack's promise to "stick with me" felt hollow now, while Lisa's claim that Jack "hid me" seemed increasingly real. Jack cracked his knuckles as blood seeped through the rag on his arm.
"Truth? She's nothing but trouble. Stay out of it." Tim tugged at his torn shirt anxiously.
"Trouble? She's hurt. Did you do this to her?" Lisa sobbed loudly.
"He did it! He kept me in the cellar, beat me. Run while you can, Tim!" Jack shoved her chair harshly, causing a sharp thud.
"Shut it. Tim's with me now." Tim tapped his foot nervously.
"Am I with you? Or should I be helping her?" He felt torn between helping Lisa, trusting Jack, and the thick trap that seemed to be closing around him.
Jack locked the door with a clicking sound. "This is just temporary, until I fix this situation," he said, wiping his arm and smearing blood, his eyes flicking between Tim and Lisa. Tim kicked the floor, boards creaking beneath him.
"Fix? You're locking her up. And what about Reggie saying I'm 'mine'? What does that mean?" Jack smirked briefly.
"Reggie's just making noise. Ignore it." Tim tugged his hair harder, thinking about the words "dead," "trust me," seeing Lisa tied up, the shadow of the gun, his gut screaming that something was wrong.
"She's alive, and this is clearly your mess," he snapped. Jack stepped closer.
"My mess? You're my boy, Tim. Stick with me." Tim kicked the wall in frustration. The words "boy" and "mine" echoed in his head as the trap became more real, the choice splitting him raw inside.
Lisa pulled desperately at the rope. "He'll kill me! Please help me, Tim!" Her voice cracked as she shook worse than before. Tim paced the tight confines of the trailer.
"Kill you? But he got me out of prison," he said, tugging his sleeve where dried blood had crusted. "Why would he hide you?" She shook her head frantically.
"He only got you out for his own benefit! He kept me quiet because I knew too much. Reggie's involved in this too!" Jack laughed, the sound low and menacing.
"Quiet? She's crazy. Don't listen to her." Tim kicked the couch again.
"Crazy? She's tied up here in front of me! I want the truth!" Jack's cut, her bruises, the words "slip," "mine," all made the four months since his release fade away. Trust was gone, and he felt torn sharply—should he help her or side with Jack? Hell was doubling down quickly.
Meanwhile, Mia hunched over Pete's table as night grew thick around them. The laptop glowed with information about the "theft ring" and Pete's warning that "Jack's deeper" in this than they thought. She tugged her braid tight as she processed what they'd learned.
"Carl's taking a cut, Jack's in deep, and Tim's caught in the middle," she said, kicking the chair, which creaked under the impact. The phrases "he's dead," "mine," the fake alibi, all breaking loudly in her mind. Pete scrolled through more files.
"Look at these logs and cash drops," he said, pointing at a particular file. "Jack's name is all over this, along with Paul's shop and Carl's signature." Mia kicked the table in frustration.
"Paul? As in Lisa's father?" Pete nodded solemnly.
"Yes. The shop is just a front, where cash moves through. Carl's definitely involved." She tapped her foot anxiously as words like "front," "quiet," "mine" piled up fast alongside the emerging truth.
Pete zoomed in on a particular document. "Here's evidence from two weeks ago showing Jack dropping off cash at Paul's shop, with Carl signing off on it," he said, his voice rough as he sipped cold coffee. Mia tugged at her sleeve nervously.
"Two weeks ago, Tim was still locked up then. Is the ring still operating?" Pete cracked his knuckles.
"Very much alive. The shop's just a cover for theft, maybe drugs too. Carl provides police protection." She kicked the floor hard.
"So Tim's arrest fits into this cover-up?" Pete smirked knowingly.
"Perfectly. It kept him locked away, the ring safe, all part of Jack's game." Mia tugged her braid harder, thinking about the words "play," "dead," "slip," the cash drop, her proof becoming solid against Jack. "Paul's involved, and Jack's tied to all of it," she muttered, the truth breaking through raw and clear, her hunt becoming more tense.
Back at the trailer, Tim sank onto the couch while Jack watched him closely. Lisa remained tied up, sobbing softly. "Please help me. He'll end my life," she pleaded, her eyes wild with fear. Tim tugged his hair again.
"End your life? But he's been like family to me. He saved me," he said, kicking the floor in confusion. Jack smirked confidently.
"I did save you. Trust me, not her." Tim tapped his foot nervously.
"Trust? She's sitting right here. Reggie said I'm 'mine.' What's really happening?" Jack wiped his injured arm again.
"What's real is me. You're my boy, Tim." Tim kicked the couch hard.
"Your boy? After the gun, her being alive, the cop calling? I need the truth!" Jack stepped closer.
"The truth is right here. Stick with me." Tim tugged his sleeve anxiously, torn between sticking with Jack or believing Lisa's story that Jack had kept her prisoner.
As Jack turned away briefly, Tim's fingers brushed against a shelf and a small black burner phone slid out. The screen lit up, showing the last call with the message, "Get rid of her tonight," in Jack's voice, low and unmistakable. Tim froze, his breath catching in his throat.
"Her?" he whispered, as the trap became fully real and the truth cut sharply through his confusion.
