Chapter 37: The Knife's Edge
Chapter 37: The Knife's Edge
Jack burst through the trailer doorway, boots slamming wood, eyes wild. Lisa's knife glinted, her shaky hand up, "taking him down" live. He saw her, froze. "You?" his voice rough, cracking his knuckles loud, lunging fast. She slashed, quick, blade caught his arm, red blooming fast.
"You lied!" she screamed, high, raw, stumbling back. Jack grabbed her wrist, yanked hard, knife clattered, blood dripping, his growl low.
"Crazy girl!" Tim jumped in, tugged her back. "Stop!" he shouted, heart pounding, trailer air thick. Lisa's claim that Jack "hid me" crashed with Jack's plea to "trust me."
Lisa pulled free, shaking worse. "You lied, kept me, beat me!" she cried, pointing at him, bruises dark, pink hair wild. Tim tugged his hair, sticky with sweat. Four months out, Jack's promise to "stick with me," the gun, now this, the trap was snapping shut around him.
"Jack, what's she mean?" he said, hoarse, kicking the couch, springs creaking. Jack wiped his arm, blood smearing.
"She's nuts, ran, came back," Jack muttered defensively. Lisa lunged again, Tim caught her.
"Enough!" Tim shouted, her breath ragged, Jack's cut dripping, truth spinning wild. He tapped his foot fast. "Did you hide her? Beat her?" Jack's eyes flicked, hard.
"She's lying, always lying," Jack spat back.
Jack stepped closer, boots thudding. "Tim, you know me, I saved you," voice low, tugging his sleeve over the cut, hiding red. Tim kicked the floor, boards groaning.
"Saved? What about the gun, the cop, her? Trust's gone," Tim said, voice breaking. Lisa sobbed.
"He kept me in the cellar after the motel incident. He locked me up, said I'd ruin him!" Tim tugged his shirt, now torn. The words "ruin," "mine," "dead," the photo, knife cut, all made the trap feel thicker.
"Ruin what?" he snapped. Jack smirked, short.
"Nothing, she's a mess." Lisa shook her head vigorously.
"A mess? Look at me!" she cried as Tim held her back, Jack's blood pooling, hell breaking loose live.
Tim paced, the trailer feeling smaller than ever. "You said she was dead, now this," he said, kicking the table, its wobble loud. Jack cracked his neck.
"She ran, I thought she was gone." Lisa hissed back.
"Ran? You chained me, beat me to keep me quiet!" Tim tugged his hair harder.
"Quiet? Like Carl?" Jack's smirk faded, eyes sharp.
"Carl's nothing, focus, Tim." Tim kicked the wall in frustration.
"Focus? She's alive, you're way off!" Jack grabbed a rag, pressed it against his cut.
"Off? I'm here, you can trust me still." Tim tapped his knee anxiously, remembering Jack's words about trust, "just in case," seeing Lisa's bruises, feeling the truth nearing, the trap tightening.
Meanwhile, Mia leaned over Pete's table, coffee now cold, laptop glowing. Jack's fake alibi was her hook, "digging deeper" her hunt. She tugged her braid, tight.
"Carl's dirty, Jack's tied to this, it's not small," she said, kicking the chair, wood creaking. The phrases "Tim's mine," "he's dead," the gun, Lisa's revelation that she was "not dead," all breaking loud in her mind. Pete scrolled through files.
"Look at these station logs, Carl's deletions, cash drops," he said, pointing at a file. "Jack's name is all over this theft ring." Mia kicked the table in frustration.
"Theft? With Carl?" Pete nodded solemnly.
"Yeah, shop parts, drugs maybe, big cut for everyone involved." She tapped her foot anxiously, the words "big," "quiet," "mine," with truth piling up fast.
Pete flipped the screen. "Here's evidence of Jack's truck at the shop theft, and Carl signs off on everything," he said, voice rough, sipping coffee. Mia tugged her sleeve nervously.
"So Carl signs off on it all, including Tim's arrest as a cover?" Pete cracked his knuckles.
"It's definitely a cover. The ring's bigger than we thought, Tim's fall hides it all." She kicked the floor, tile scuffing.
"Are you saying Jack framed him?" Pete shook his head.
"Not framed exactly, used. The arrest keeps Tim close, the ring safe." Mia tugged her braid harder, the words "used," "mine," "dead," the fake alibi, her proof solid, breaking raw.
"Close for what purpose?" she asked. Pete smirked knowingly.
"This is Jack's game, deeper than you can imagine."
Mia stood and paced the kitchen, which felt tight, as Pete's mug steamed. "So this game, Tim's out with him now, that gun isn't safe," she said, kicking the wall, plaster denting. "Is this theft ring, Carl's cut, even bigger than we thought?" Pete nodded.
"Much bigger. The shop's just a front, drugs most likely. Jack's in deep, and Carl provides police protection." She tapped her phone, remembering the recording, the "he's dead" claim, the photo.
"So Carl's pull, Tim's arrest, it's all cover for this operation?" Pete grabbed a pen, scribbled notes.
"Yeah, the ring stays quiet, Tim stays locked up, Jack stays clean until now." Mia kicked the chair in frustration.
"Clean? He's completely dirty, and Tim's caught in the middle of it!" The truth was near, her hunt live, Jack's shadow dark over everything.
Back at the trailer, Tim faced Jack with Lisa behind him. "What's deeper? What is she ruining?" he demanded, kicking the couch. Jack wiped more blood from his arm.
"Nothing, just her lies." Lisa shook with anger.
"Lies? The cellar, how you beat me, it's all your mess!" Tim tugged his hair anxiously, the words "mess," "trust me," the gun, "dead," the trap doubling down quickly.
"What mess are you talking about?" he pressed. Jack stepped closer.
"Drop it, Tim, you're my boy." Tim kicked the floor hard.
"Your boy? She's cut you open, I want the truth!" Jack's eyes hardened.
"The truth is me, I saved you." Lisa sobbed desperately.
"Saved? He's lying to you, run while you can!" Tim held her as Jack's cut continued to bleed, hell spinning sharp around them all.
Jack grabbed Tim's arm roughly. "Enough, she's crazy," he growled, voice rough, blood dripping. Lisa shook her head violently.
"Crazy? You locked me up!" Tim tugged his arm free from Jack's grip.
"Locked her up? You told me she was gone. I want the truth, Jack!" he shouted, kicking the table, causing it to wobble sharply. Jack cracked his knuckles threateningly.
"The truth is right here, trust me." Tim tapped his foot nervously, remembering words about trust, "mine," "dead," seeing Lisa's knife, the trap closing in. Suddenly, Jack's phone buzzed in his pocket. He pulled it out, glanced at it. Reggie's voice came through, low and threatening.
"Your boy's free for now, but he's mine if you slip up," the voice said, cutting through everything, the threat live, hell feeling tighter than ever.
