Chapter 53 THE CHOICE

Chapter 53 THE CHOICE
Rex couldn't bring himself to say anything. He stood frozen, while Vanessa's fingers kept trailing down his chest, leaving invisible trails of fire that his traitorous body remembered even as his mind screamed at him to run.

Kira.

Her face suddenly flashed behind his eyes…the way she had looked at him in the kitchen, chocolate smeared across her lips, her head thrown back in pleasure, and her fingers tangled in his hair. Even the way she'd whispered his name like a prayer, like it was all that mattered to her.

And then the video. His own voice echoing in his ears: "Spread for me, naughty girl."

His father's voice followed, cold and cutting: "She's mine, Rex. Back off!"

Rex's hand trembled as it hovered in the air, caught somewhere between pushing Vanessa away and pulling her closer. His muscles were locked, and his body was betraying him in dangerous ways he couldn't control. The harsh but familiar scent of her perfume reminded him of nights he'd tried to forget, and doubts just kept flooding his mind.

"Just say yes, Rex,” Vanessa whispered. “One night to prove my point… That's all I'm asking."

Her voice was soft and coaxing and utterly without mercy. She knew exactly what she was doing. She'd always known. That was the thing about Vanessa…she understood the power of desire better than anyone he'd ever met, and she had no problem using that knowledge as a weapon.

Rex's throat was dry. His pulse hammered so hard he could feel it in his temples, in his fingertips, and even in the hollow space behind his ribs where something that might have been his conscience still lived. He wanted to push her away. He wanted to scream at her, to throw her out of his study and out of his life and forget she'd ever existed.

But the video was still playing in his head. The video she'd claimed was already copied to other places for safe keeping. The video that could destroy everything…Kira's reputation, their future, and the fragile trust they'd built in the middle of all this chaos. If Victor were to find out, if anyone was to even find out…

Vanessa leaned in closer, brushing the shell of his ear with her lips. Her breath was warm, impossibly intimate, and he hated how his body wouldn't stop reacting to it.

"Remember how good we were together?" Her voice was even lower now and deeply seductive. "I can make you forget her, Rex. Just for one night… Just give me the chance."

His eyes fluttered closed again, and for one terrible, shameful second, he let himself remember in detail…the heat of her body against his, the way she'd whispered filthy promises in the dark, the way she'd made him feel like he was the only man in the world. It had been a lie, all of it. He knew that now. But the memory of the lie still had power.

He took a very deep breath to calm his nerves, and then he saw Kira again…her eyes wide with hurt, and her voice breaking as she said, "I need time, Rex. Alone." He saw her walking away from him in the hallway with rigid shoulders, her heart shattering with every step. He saw the way she'd looked at him at breakfast, cold and distant, like he was a stranger she couldn't trust.

No.

The thought cut cleanly through the haze like a blade. He wasn't that man anymore. He wasn't the boy who'd let Vanessa use him, who'd believed her lies because he'd been too desperate for affection to see the truth. He'd spent years climbing out of that hole. He wasn't about to fall back in…not for her, not for anyone.

Rex's hand closed around her wrist and pushed forcefully.

Vanessa stumbled back in shock, her face twisting from seduction to shock in the space of a few seconds. She caught herself on the edge of his desk however, eyes wide and her lips parted.

But then the shock faded as quickly as it had shown , replaced by that same infuriating smile…the one that said she'd already won, she just hadn't told him how yet.

"Get the fuck out," Rex snarled at her in a shaky voice. His chest heaved with the effort of holding himself back, while every muscle in his body was coiled, ready to fight or flee or do something he'd regret if she didn't stop.

She didn't look angry at his reaction. There wasn't even any sign of disappointment on her face despite the outcome, just that strange and creepy look of triumph.

"You'll come to me, Rex," she murmured softly. "I know you do…you always do."

She walked to the door, pausing with her hand on the handle and giving him one last glance.

"Think about it, Rex. One night, and in exchange, I promise I'll give you your freedom. But you should also know that the cost of saying no will be quite expensive, and you better be ready."

Then she laughed…a low, musical sound that echoed in the silence of the study long after she'd closed the door behind her.

Rex stood there, frozen, his chest still heaving, and his hands still shaking as the threat hung in the air like the invisible and suffocating.

He thought about Kira again…then his mind went back to Vanessa threatening to take that away from him if he didn't give in. He wanted to punch something so bad, to pour out his pain physically and break something. He wanted to grab Vanessa by the neck and shake the truth out of her until she told him where she'd hidden the copies, until she promised never to use them again until she disappeared from his life forever.

But he knew better than that. Vanessa wasn't one who responded to threats. She responded instead to leverage, strategy, and the careful manipulation of weakness. She'd already proven that. She'd somehow turned his own moment of vulnerability into a weapon, and she'd use it for as long as it served her.

He couldn't fight her the way he wanted to. He couldn't scream or rage or threaten. He had to be smarter than that.

Rex forced himself to take a breath. Then another. He felt the rage dying down slowly. But he needed to talk to Kira, as soon as possible.

On second thought however, he begins to question the logic and

But what would he say? "I'm sorry, but Vanessa has a video of us having sex in the kitchen and she's blackmailing me with it." She'd already walked away from him once. She'd already made it clear that she needed time, that the weight of everything was too much to bear. How could he add this to her burden?

And yet…what choice did he have? If he kept it from her and she found out later, she would never trust him again. She would see it as another betrayal, another lie in a house full of lies. He couldn't let that happen. He wouldn't let that happen.

Rex reached for his phone and began to type a message: "We need to talk. It's important. Vanessa…"

He stopped. Deleted it, and started again.

"Kira, I know you need space. But there's something you need to know. About Vanessa. About what she's holding over me. Please…when you get back, find me. I'll explain everything."

He stared at the words, his thumb hovering over the send button. He could feel the weight of the decision pressing down on him, the impact of what he was about to do.

If he sent this, there was no taking it back. If he sent this, he was admitting his vulnerability, his fear, and his desperation. He was trusting her with the truth…all of it.

But if he didn't send it, he would be seen as lying by omission. He would be letting Vanessa win.

Rex closed his eyes for a few more seconds, and then shook his head. smiling.
