Chapter 12 Playing Tricks on the Rumormonger

Not far from Hailey and Cassidy were two other women who had come to select jewelry together, and it was the curly-haired woman who mentioned Cassidy earlier. She let out a mocking laugh. "Cassidy had only been married into the Cooper family for a short time before Ashton passed away. It must be because she's bad luck!"

Her companion asked curiously, "Why would you say that?"

The curly-haired woman covered her mouth in surprise. "You don't know that? Cassidy used to be a prostitute! It must be because she contracted some STD outside and then passed it on to Ashton, which led to his death."

The companion looked at the curly-haired woman in shock and began to ask her for more details.

Hailey listened to their slander, her face turning red with anger. She wanted to go over and argue with them, but Cassidy stopped her.

"Cassidy! Why are you holding me back? They're spreading rumors!" Hailey asked angrily.

Cassidy didn't expect her reputation to be so tarnished in some people's eyes, but there were still things she needed to figure out. "Hailey, don't worry, I'll handle it."

Hailey didn't know what Cassidy intended to do, but the look in Cassidy's eyes reassured her, making her believe that Cassidy could handle the situation.

Cassidy approached the two ladies with a curious expression. "Excuse me, are you talking about the Cassidy who married into the Cooper family? I heard she got lucky and married rich, so I've always been curious about her."

Cassidy pulled Hailey to her side and added, "And my friend is also very curious. I just heard you discussing her. Hope you don't mind me butting in."

The two ladies gave them a once-over.

The curly-haired lady thought, 'The one talking is unfamiliar, but her friend looks vaguely familiar. I saw her at a party; she's from a lesser-known wealthy family. But the woman wearing that expensive necklace might be connected to someone even wealthier.' With that in mind, she smiled and said, "Not at all. I'm happy to share whatever you want to know!"

Cassidy thanked her with a surprising look. "I just heard you say Cassidy was a prostitute before she married into the Cooper family, but she's the daughter of the Monroe family. How could she have been a prostitute?"

The curly-haired lady smiled. "Very few people know about this. Although Cassidy is the daughter of the Monroe family, her father never cares for her. To survive, she turned to a prostitute. She only managed to marry Ashton because her father kept the scandal hidden!"

Cassidy nodded with a smile, but her eyes gradually turned cold.

Hailey clenched her fists in anger at the curly-haired lady's words; if not for her belief that Cassidy could handle it, she would have confronted the curly-haired woman.

"You're impressive for knowing such a secret!" Cassidy looked at the curly-haired lady with admiration.

The curly-haired lady waved her hand modestly. "It's nothing!"

"You must be an incredibly remarkable person to know all this. I'm so lucky to have met you!" Cassidy's praise made the curly-haired lady very happy, so she told Cassidy her name.

Cassidy showed a surprised expression. "No wonder you know so many secrets!" Then she looked at the curly-haired lady's companion. "May I ask who this young lady is?"

The curly-haired lady readily revealed her companion's identity as well.

Having learned their identities, Cassidy stopped pretending. She turned to the store clerk. "Hello, could you please wrap up the jewelry these two ladies have chosen?" After a moment's thought, she corrected herself, "Actually, wrap up all the jewelry in the entire counter for me."

The two ladies looked at Cassidy in surprise. "Miss, we can buy it ourselves!"

Cassidy just smiled at them without saying a word, which made them even more convinced that Cassidy wanted to give them the jewelry.

Only Hailey, standing aside, understood what Cassidy wanted to do at this moment. Seeing the smiles on the two ladies' faces, she also smiled with a meaningful look.

The clerk quickly wrapped up the jewelry the two ladies had chosen and handed it to Cassidy.

Cassidy took the jewelry box and handed it to the curly-haired lady.

The curly-haired lady smiled and thanked Cassidy while raising her hand to take the jewelry box. Just as her hand was about to touch the jewelry box, Cassidy suddenly pulled the jewelry box back, leaving her confused.

Then Cassidy casually threw the jewelry box into the trash can, watching the curly-haired lady and her companion's faces darken. She smiled gently. "Ladies, I forgot to introduce myself. I am the Cassidy you're all talking about, the one who married Ashton. As for the prostitute rumor, it's nothing but slander! If I choose to, my legal team will promptly file a lawsuit against you." Her eyes turned a bit cold as she spoke.

The curly-haired lady and her companion were intimidated by Cassidy's aura, but they didn't believe a word Cassidy said.

"How absurd! You claim to be Mrs. Cooper? Dressed like that? Without any bodyguards? Standing next to someone like Hailey?" The curly-haired lady sneered, recognizing Hailey and reassessing the woman in front of her. She concluded the woman was just an arrogant socialite, reinforcing her belief that she couldn't possibly be Ashton's wife.

"If Mrs. Cooper finds out you're impersonating her, she won't let you off the hook!" she continued. "Hailey, where did you find someone to impersonate Mrs. Cooper? My family has connections with the Coopers. Be careful, or I'll tell my father and ruin your family's business!"

The curly-haired lady's companion also recognized Hailey. "I also don't believe Mrs. Cooper would be so reckless. Next time you pretend to be someone else, remember to act more convincingly. Of course, if you apologize to us now, I might consider not telling Mrs. Cooper about your impersonation."

Hailey couldn't hold back anymore, thinking, 'I have never seen such shameless people. They were the ones who started the rumors about Cassidy, and now they are turning it around and saying Cassidy is in the wrong!'

Cassidy was also feeling a bit angry. She had come out shopping to relax, but now this incident had spoiled her mood, which had been gradually improving.

Seeing Cassidy's irritation, the curly-haired lady assumed she was feeling guilty and became even more arrogant. "Are you scared now? Then hurry up and apologize to us!"

Their argument grew louder, attracting the attention of other customers who began whispering and pointing. Cassidy could clearly hear that they believed the curly-haired lady's accusations and thought she was an imposter.

"Hurry up and apologize!" the curly-haired lady said aggressively.

As soon as she finished speaking, Cassidy slapped her across the face.

Cassidy used great force, and her palm quickly turned red, while the curly-haired lady's face swelled and reddened almost immediately. The crisp sound of the slap made the store instantly quiet. No one expected Cassidy to suddenly hit the curly-haired woman.

The curly-haired lady quickly reacted, shouting that she wanted to hit Cassidy, but was stopped by Hailey. She was about to lose her mind, her screams nearly deafening Hailey. "Bitch! I'm going to kill you today!"

With Cassidy's gaze growing even colder, the curly-haired lady didn't dare to charge forward again after making eye contact with her.

Cassidy didn't want to let them off so easily. She pretended to soften and inquired, "May I know which families you two belong to?"

"Are you afraid of us?" The two women exchanged a glance and proudly stated their family names.

"The Brook family and the Hill family," Cassidy repeated. She remembered their heads being kicked out of Cooper Manor last year. She called the butler immediately, "Make these two families disappear by any means necessary."

The curly-haired lady immediately laughed, "Do you really think you're Mrs. Cooper?"

Her companion couldn't help but mock Cassidy as well.

But Cassidy just looked at them, and under her gaze, the two ladies gradually became anxious. Ten minutes later, both received calls from their families, who anxiously asked what they had done today.

"What?" They asked in shock, wondering, 'Why? It has only been ten minutes and they are told our families are about to go bankrupt?'

The curly-haired lady and her companion exchanged glances, finally believing that the woman in front of them was indeed "Mrs. Cooper". They immediately begged humbly, "Mrs. Cooper, please forgive us!"

But Cassidy didn't want to be entangled with them. "I want you to disappear immediately."

The two ladies still wanted to plead for forgiveness, but the store employees, having understood Cassidy's identity, promptly kicked them out of the jewelry store.
