Chapter 120 Chapter 120

Chapter 120 Chapter 120
"For the future," Klaus said, beating his chest.

"For the future!" The people chorused in return, beating their chest too. Klaus did it a few more times and they reacted accordingly, then he turned to face me, smiling in satisfaction.

It was scary to see the way all of them suddenly moved from not wanting to fight for themselves to being willing to do whatever it took to secure their future. If all the people here maintained their stance and went to war like Klaus wanted, Aiden was going to have a tough time, even with the type of person he was. Since I was the only reasonable person there, I knew it was up to me to talk sense into them.

After a while, the gathering was dismissed and I returned home with Klaus. He was beaming throughout the drive back and I almost wanted to reach out and knock the smile off his face. When we got back to the house, Klaus went off to his room, leaving me to myself. I returned to my room too, locking myself in. I kept hoping Klaus wouldn't invite me to dinner again and just when it was a few minutes past seven o'clock in the evening, I heard his drive out of the house.

My wish had been granted. Deciding to wait a few more minutes, I went to shower and change clothes and after almost an hour since he left home, I sneaked out of the house, careful to avoid getting spotted by the maid. It would be game over for me if that happened.

Walking down the street, I realized I hadn't even thought of where to start from. At the gathering, I'd noticed that the men had been more excited about the prospect of war than the women. And since the best way to break through any surface was through the weakest link, I knew the women would be the best targets for me. To my pleasure, the door of the first house I arrived at was answered by a woman and I saw recognition flash in her eyes immediately she saw me.

“Luna?” She asked in surprise. “To what do I owe this pleasure?”

"It's about what was discussed at the meeting. I'm not in support of Klaus' plan and I'm starting a movement to go against it. War isn't as easy as they made it seem there and I really hope you guys can realize that before it's too late," I explained to her.

She regarded me with suspicious eyes and she seemed to weigh her words before saying, “is this a prank? Did Klaus send you around to test people's loyalty? I can assure you that—”

"No, not at all," I cut in. “Klaus doesn't know I am here and he can never know. Please, listen to reason. War is the last thing you guys need right now. There are other ways to solve this.”

"Yeah? Like what and what?" She demanded in a tone that told me I suspected from the start; I was going to have a hard time getting through to her.

"I haven't really figured it out but I will soon," I replied. "I just need people to know what war would cost them." "Mum!" A voice called from inside and the woman turned her head briefly before returning her attention to me. “I'm sorry, but I have to go. My children need me,” she said and the door slammed shut before I could say anything. Deciding not to waste my time pondering over it, I moved over to the next house where I made more headway than I did with the first woman. Out of the ten houses I visited that night, I was able to get eight people to support what I said. Six out of those eight were women and the other two were men who weren't all that enthusiastic about going to war, something I was very happy to see.

And so I continued, going from house to house every night I was able to sneak out of the house. Most of the support I got was from women and they all promised to change their husbands' hearts.

On the third day since I started my mission, I returned home happy with the progress I had made. Sneaking back into the house the same way I had snuck out, I looked around the living room to ensure that it was clear and after that, I headed towards the hallway, pleased with myself.

As I locked my door, I heard faint movement behind me and my hand immediately went for the light switch on the wall. Hitting it hard, the light came on to reveal Klaus sitting on the edge of my bed, his face contorted with fury. I needed no prompt to know what was the reason for that.

"How dare you?" He asked harshly, rising to his feet. "How dare you go behind me to try and turn people against me? Did you think I wouldn't find out?"

Of course, I did. But, instead of saying that, I decided I wasn't going to cower in fear like I knew he was expecting

me to.

"Why are you doing this?" I asked. "What do you stand to gain from this war you're so hungry for?"

"That's not something you should worry your pretty little head about," he returned, approaching me slowly. I kept my distance from him as I moved to one side of the room, making sure he wasn't able to close that distance. “You know most of these people will lose their lives, the lives you're deceiving them that they are fighting for. Yet, you're still going ahead with it. Why?”

Instead of answering, he looked around the room, as if searching for something, then his gaze finally landed on the door after which he looked back at me. "You know what? I think I've given you enough freedom and you've shown me my error in doing that. It's time I fixed that error,” he said and I could immediately guess what his next move was going to be.

I moved at the same time that he did but he was faster to me since he was closer to the door. In one swift motion, he removed the key from behind my door arloading..d the room, slamming it shut. Before I could pull the door open back, I heard him inserting the key in it. Two loud clicking sounds followed and his receding footsteps echoed in the hallway not long after.
