Chapter 324 The Fairness of Truth

Vivian took Brevard to her office at the Swain Group.

There were a few people still working overtime in the company, but she asked them to leave directly.

Seeing that she still had a long face, Brevard took the initiative to lighten the atmosphere.

"You went to the mall just now, probably for a meal, right? Are you still hungry now? How about I order some delivery?"

Vivian glanced at him. "No need. Let's get straight to business. Do you want to talk to me first or should I ask you some questions? To be honest, I have some questions for you too."

"Please don't." Brevard smiled and said, "How can we work on an empty stomach? What do you want to eat? Do you like spicy food?"

Vivian tapped the table directly. "I said no need. Can't we get to the point directly?"

Brevard was taken aback for a moment, then smiled, and adjusted his glasses. "Okay, you are the boss."

Looking at Brevard like this, Vivian suddenly felt that she was being quite unfair to him.

He was just concerned about whether she had eaten or not.

She felt a bit uncomfortable and scratched her head, then suddenly lowered her voice. "I'm sorry. I was rude. I'm not hungry right now. Let's talk about business first. If you still feel like eating later, I'll treat you to some night snacks."

"Okay," Brevard still smiled. "I understand how you feel right now. We all know how good your relationship with your grandmother is. After all, you used to rely on each other. But now that you are willing to sit down and talk to me, I believe you have your own judgment."

"Well." Vivian weakly leaned back on the chair. "Go ahead. When did you start to suspect my grandmother? Speak objectively. Don't worry about the relationship between me and my grandmother."

"Alright." Brevard nodded. "Actually, we need to start with the big fire at the Benton Mansion. At that time, everyone thought the arsonist was Tyler, and I and Ethan thought so too.

"But later, someone found bottles at the scene of the fire, and those spirits were the accelerant for the fire. It is very unreasonable if we assume Tyler was the arsonist.

"He sneaked around the Benton Mansion alone, even injured Owen, and carried several bottles of alcohol with him through the whole process, which is simply not realistic.

"And that night, your grandmother had the smell of alcohol on her, and there were broken bottles in the room where she lived. Don't you think this is too much of a coincidence?

"Next is Tyler's escape. He likely disappeared from the yard where your grandmother lived. Your grandmother claimed to have not seen him, but that may not be true because there was an issue with the cameras at the time.

"At that time, we were suspicious of your grandmother, but we didn't understand why she would do such a thing. It wasn't until we found a woman, whose nickname was Girly.

"She is very likely to have had a relationship with Mr. Benton in the past and even gave birth to a child for him. If this Girly is indeed your grandmother Margaret, then everything makes sense.

"Clive is very likely to be her biological son, and Tyler may be her biological grandson, which is why she hates Mr. Benton for abandoning her and resents the favored Ethan! She unconditionally helped Tyler escape, and even willingly became a hostage to help him avoid arrest.

"You probably can't accept all of this speculation. That's why Ethan doesn't want you to know that we are investigating your grandmother."

"I know." Vivian nodded. "I understand Ethan's intentions. I have indeed never thought of... what you said. But, it's written clearly in the documents, and your reasoning is sound. It was indeed difficult for me to accept when I saw all this."

"Well, I knew you wouldn't be biased. Ethan really cares about you. Look, you just said you didn't want to talk to him, so he didn't dare to disturb you and had to ask me to inquire about your current mood."

Brevard said, handing the phone to Vivian.

Sure enough, Ethan was messaging Brevard, asking, "Is she in a better mood now?"

Although the words had no emotions, Vivian could feel the warmth conveyed in that sentence.

She handed the phone back to Brevard and said, "Let me call him."

"Okay. I'll go out and buy some food. I'm hungry. How about you?"

Vivian nodded. "I want something light."

Brevard made an "OK" gesture. "Got it."

As soon as Brevard left, Vivian dialed Ethan's number on her phone.

Ethan had been staring at his phone, so as soon as Vivian's call came in, he answered it.

"Vivian, what's wrong?"

"Nothing." Vivian squeezed her phone, her voice a little despondent. "I'm just not feeling great."

Ethan immediately apologized, "I'm really sorry. What should I do now? Tell me."

Vivian felt like crying. "You idiot. Why are you apologizing when you don't even know why I'm upset?"

"Yeah, because I did something to make you unhappy."

"But that was just a moment." Vivian paused, her voice choking up. "What makes me sadder and scared is that what you found out is true. In fact, just now, I talked with Brevard and remembered some details of the fire at the Benton Mansion.

"I recalled the wine stains on her clothes that my grandmother hastily washed off. I recalled her asking me about the security cameras at the Benton Mansion, even the fact that Tyler called me cousin and called her Grandmother before dying in Miriwyth, and many, many small details... Ethan, what I'm most worried about now is this."

Ethan was stunned because he heard his beloved woman choking up.

It turned out that her bad mood was because of this. She seemed almost on the verge of crying.

It was him who made her so upset that she was almost crying!

He felt heartbroken.

After a moment of thought, he quickly made a decision.

He solemnly said to her, "Vivian, you have me. Whenever and wherever, no matter what happens, I will be with you to face it. But if this matter makes you so upset, then we won't investigate anymore. Let's just stop everything here."

"What are you saying?"

"I'm saying we won't investigate, Vivian. Let's leave it at that. Pretend we don't know anything. I just want you to be happy."

"Can you really not pursue this?"

"Yes. I used to want the truth, but just now I suddenly realized that you are more important to me than the truth. You can destroy those documents now."

"Really? I'm in the office right now. If I shred the documents in the shredder, all the evidence from decades ago will be gone."

"Yes, shred them."

Vivian took the documents to the shredder.

She slowly fed the documents to the shredder.

However, Ethan on the phone still hadn't heard the sound of the shredder working.

He was somewhat surprised. "Vivian?"

Vivian, with red eyes, took the documents away from the shredder.

She thought for a moment and said, "The truth is only fair to everyone, which is far more important than my own happiness."
