I tossed around the bed, trying to ignore the buzzing of my phone. The person wouldn’t stop
calling.
I lazily picked up the phone just to silence it, knowing it was definitely Cassandra calling. But to my surprise, it was Julie. I hadn’t spoken to her since last night, when she tried cutting me off once again.
I answered the phone, hearing Julie’s frazzled voice on the other end. “Damien, I need a favor,” she said, sounding anxious.
With the way she sounded, I knew something was definitely wrong.
What’s going on?” I asked, immediately .
“Firstly, I want to apologize to you for the way I ended things last time. I’m sorry, and I need you. The whole situation with Avery is driving me crazy, and that’s why I made that stupid decision. But I need your help. Can we just forget about what happened?” she asked.
“Of course. What is the issue? You’re getting me worried, Julie,” I said.
She tried explaining, but her words were rushed. I could barely make sense of what she was saying.
“Julie, I need you to take a deep breath,” I said.
“It’s going to be fine, but I need to hear what you’re saying. So can you please calm down and take it slowly?” I asked.
“Avery and I had a fight. She stomped out of the house and told me she was going to her friend’s place, but Alex just sent me a picture of Avery at his reception,” she said, pausing.
“I don’t want anything to happen to her. She wasn’t really in a good state when she left… I need someone to accompany me there. Can you come with me?”
I didn’t hesitate to reply. “Of course, I’ll be at your house in ten minutes, Get ready,” I said, rushing to the car and immediately calling the driver.
As I arrived at Julie’s house, I could see the stress and anxiety written all over her face. She looked like a mother hen whose chicks had been taken away by a hawk.
“Julie, are you okay?” I asked softly as I stared at the invitation card.

Julie nodded, taking a deep breath. “Yeah, I’m fine. Who am I kidding? No, I am not.”
“What I mean is, are you okay with him getting married?” I asked her, genuinely curious because I needed to know if she was over her ex.
“Of course, Damien. I hate that bastard.”
I smiled, trying to tease her out of her bad mood.
“Well, you look absolutely stunning, as always. I’m sure you’ll be the prettiest woman at the ball, and I get the honor of being your plus one today. Couldn’t be more grateful,” I said, winking at her.
But Julie just smiled weakly, her eyes fixed on the invitation card. I realized that she was too distracted to appreciate my attempts at humor.
What has really been going on? I wish I hadn’t argued with her that day. Maybe I could have been there for her. I won’t leave her side today; she needs me.
As we approached the venue, I could feel how hard she was trying to stay calm. Julie wasn’t saying anything; she just looked at the card while gripping it tightly, and her breathing quickened.
“Hey, everything is going to be okay. I’m sure Avery is safe,” I said. “And trust me when I say, I’ve got your back.”
Julie looked at me.
“Thank you so much, Damien. I really appreciate it, and I am sorry about my recent behavior. I know I can be overbearing; I just can’t help feeling insecure with Cassandra
around.”
I smiled, at least she finally admitted she was insecure.
“No, no, you don’t need to apologize,” I said, as I held her hand.
“I know I’ve been distant lately, but it’s just been a lot to deal with. And you’re also going through a lot. The Cassandra thing isn’t making our situation any better, so I understand how you feel.”
Julie squeezed my hand and smiled. “I know, Damien. And I’m sorry if I haven’t been present in your life, like you are in mine. It’s just… hearing about you with Cassandra brings up a lot of old feelings for me, and I’m scared of getting hurt.”
I nodded, understanding. “I know, Julie. And I’m sorry for hurting you unintentionally. But I promise you, my eyes are for only you and you alone. I love you, Julie.”

Julie smiled, her eyes shining with tears, as she hugged me in the car. “I love you too,
Damien.”
We came down from the car and I could feel the mood shift. Julie held my hands for support and I squeezed her hands to tell her that I’m here. The lively chatter and music died down, and all eyes turned to us. I hate when people do this, must they make her feel awkward.
I stared at Julie’s hand, which couldn’t stop shaking. Alex immediately walked up to her and dragged her to the side.
“What the hell are you doing here?” he asked.
“That is no way to talk to a woman,” I said.
Who the fuck are you. Stay out of this!!!” he yelled.
I moved closer and removed his hands from hers.
‘It is my business if you’re making my woman uncomfortable,” I answered, finally getting the chance to tell him who I was to her.
And no man puts his hands on my woman. The next time you do that, it will end with a punch,” I said.
“Where is she? Please bring my daughter to me. She needs to go home,” Julie said with teary
eyes.
‘Damien, please give me the invitation card,” Julie muttered, taking a deep breath.
I nodded and handed her the card. She fixed her hands in mine while leaning on me, and
together, we stepped into the lion’s den, ready to face whatever lay ahead.
