Avery POV

I tossed and turned on the bed over and over again. I just couldn’t stop thinking about what I
saw.
Mom kissed him.
I shut my eyes, trying to stop thinking about it, but I just couldn’t get it out of my head-the way she kissed him.
I turned again, pulling the blanket over my head. It was already bad enough that Dad was getting married, and now this? Mom kissing a stranger?
I squeezed the blanket in my hands. This was just all too much for me to process.
Then I heard a knock on the door.
She knocked again.
“Avery?” my mom called, but I didn’t answer.
I turned around, hoping she would just go away.
But unfortunately, she opened the door with the spare key
“Avery, please don’t be like this to me,” she said.
I didn’t move.
She walked closer, and after a moment she sat down.
“Avery,” she whispered again.
I took a deep breath and finally turned over.
Her eyes were red, like she had been crying.
“Don’t I deserve a happy family?” I asked.
“Why can’t we be like others, a happy big family? Why can’t you and Dad come back together, just… for my sake?” I asked.
She looked at me like she wasn’t expecting what I said.

I sat up and faced her.
“Don’t I?” I asked again.
“Avery, I-”
I shook my head. “Mom, please, can’t you get back together with Dad?”
She looked down for a second, then back at me. “It’s not what you think.”
“Then what is it?”
She sighed. “You are too young to understand.”

“But I am not too young to feel the pain of a broken marriage,” I shot back. “And I had to see my mom kissing another guy.”
I said, but my tears barely made my words audible.
“It’s already hard enough with Dad getting married. And now you-” I stopped, shaking my head. “I just wanted things to be normal again.”
Mom reached for my hand, but I pulled away.
“I’m not trying to replace him with your father,” she said.
I looked at her. “Then what are you doing?”
Then the room went quiet, as she took a deep breath and didn’t say anything.
Then she asked, “Are you going to the wedding?”
I blinked. “What?”
She looked at me. “Your dad wants you to come, he is expecting you.” She hesitated. “Maybe it would be nice if you attended.”
I stared at her.
After everything, she still thought I would want to go?
I shook my head, already annoyed that she brought up Dad’s wedding.
“No, Mom. I don’t want to go, and I won’t, because the only person Dad should be getting married to is you,” I said, my voice harsh and loud.
My mom looked taken aback by my words. “Avery, please, can you stop this? It is already hard

for me.”
I stood up from the bed and reached for Dad’s invitation card as I tore it.

“Mom, end your relationship with him, then apologize to Dad, and maybe we can be a happy family again,” I said.
My mom sighed, looking frustrated.
“You are really going to be a pain in the neck. Can you please just understand?”
“Okay, Mom. If you’re not going to listen to me, then you should stop trying to persuade me to go to a wedding that I don’t care about. I’m going to my friend’s place. Don’t come and disturb me,” I said.
“Avery Reed, would you come back here?” she shouted.
But it was too late; I had already left her. I headed down the street, wondering where I should go because I really didn’t want to go to my friend’s place. All they would be talking about is the wedding and how stepmoms are mean. I took a deep breath as I made up my mind to go to the wedding on my own, just to see who he left Mom for.
As I arrived at the wedding venue, I felt anxious, but I still went in.
Why am I here? Why was I putting myself through this?
I sat at the back, watching my father standing at the altar, saying his vows to his new bride with a smile on his face. Then I saw my little brother being carried by his nannies. They all looked like a perfect, happy family. Where do I fit in this? Do I fit in anywhere? Would Dad still love me?
I just wished I was part of Dad’s family, or maybe he had taken me with him after the divorce. By now, I would have been staying with my brother.
At the reception, which was held in Dad’s new home, Dad and his new wife danced as if it was only the two of them in the world, and I became more emotional watching this whole fiasco unfold. I couldn’t take being left out, so I went to meet him.
When my dad introduced me as his daughter, I felt a surge of pride. And as I looked around at the warm and welcoming atmosphere, I felt a sense of belonging. I wasn’t alone; he wanted
me here. The wife wasn’t that bad either.
“Come, Avery, let me show you the place and your room,” my dad told me, smiling at me. I was shocked and pleased to find that I also had a room here.
The house was decorated exactly like our old house, with the same furniture, dining sets, and

everything. It felt like home to me, and for a moment, I forgot about my dad getting a new wife, my mom and the guy she kissed, and all the drama that had been going on. I forgot the fight that happened yesterday.
This was what my family was supposed to be like-happy and together, I thought. The only thing missing was my mom. I hoped she wasn’t looking for me, that she wasn’t worried about me. I felt guilty for not informing her first.
