I adjusted the slit of my red dress. It was more revealing than what I usually wore, but tonight was different—I had another motive. I stared at my phone. He was supposed to be here by now; he was already five minutes late.
Then my phone beep, I got a text from him.
“I won’t be able to meet up. Something unexpected came up. Maybe next time, I’ll make it to you.”
And there goes my date-canceled—and all my plans ruined. I sighed as I texted back.
“Lol, it’s not a big deal. I’m also busy, so maybe next time,” I texted.
up
I stared at the restaurant and my gown. There was no way I was going to go home without at least enjoying myself. I ordered a glass of wine.
The waiter poured a glass of wine, and I took a sip. As I looked at the restaurant, my fingers tapped impatiently on the table. The truth was that I was disappointed, and leaving without ordering anything would only make me feel more embarrassed.
As I let my eyes travel around the restaurant I saw them.
Alex.
And Bella.
They were sitting at a corner table, laughing loudly, and she didn’t look pregnant—she probably had given birth or, better still, had a miscarriage.
“Great, just when I thought my night couldn’t get any worse,” I muttered. I clearly didn’t want to spend my night staring at them and watching them act like lovebirds. I took the last sip of my drink.
As I grabbed my bag and left the restaurant, they had obviously ruined my mood.
As I walked outside, I stared at the road. It was empty, and there were barely any taxis around. I had intentionally not driven because I wanted Damien to drive me home, or better still, end up at his house.
As I walked down the street, I spotted Maria. She was standing outside a mall, wearing the mall uniform, and she looked tired. Seeing her like that made me happy, and a thought came to me: maybe taunting her would make me feel better. I couldn’t help it. I changed direction and headed straight for her.

“Well, well,” I said, stopping in front of her. “Look who it is. Maria. The mighty Maria, a one- time famous author now working the mall shift. You really don’t know how life will turn out, do you?”
“I’m not in the mood, Julie,” she said, turning away.
But I wasn’t done. Not yet.
“You know, I was just thinking how effective karma is,” I said. “You lied to your best friend, slept with her husband, and ruined your own marriage just because of a man. And now what use is it? He’s living his best life now, isn’t he? And here you are, all miserable.”
“Get out of here, Julie,” she said through gritted teeth.
I smiled as I saw how angry and miserable she looked. “You don’t get to tell me what to do. You destroyed everything for yourself, Maria. And guess what? No one’s coming to save you.”
Her hand came up so fast, I didn’t see it coming. She slapped me hard across the face, making me stumble back a bit.
“Oh, you really are something else,” I said as I held my cheeks. “You want to hit me because the truth hurts? Fine. Let’s do this.”
I slapped her hand across the face and pulled her hair. Before I knew it, we were locked in a full-blown fight. I grabbed at her hair, she pulled my arms, and we both shouted curses at each other.
“Let go of me!” Maria screamed, trying to push me away.
“Not until you let go of my hair, you whore!” I shot back, yanking her hair.
It took two security guards and a store manager to pull us apart. I was breathing hard, my dress slightly torn, my hair a mess. Maria didn’t look much better-her shirt was wrinkled, and I made sure she was injured.
“You’re both coming with us,” one of the guards said.
They marched us to a back office, where the police were called. Neither of us said a word during the wait. I could feel Maria glaring at me, and I refused to meet her eyes.
When the officers arrived, we were both handed over and taken to the station. Sitting in the holding area, I finally turned to her.
“This is your fault,” I said.
“If you hadn’t slapped me first, we would never have gotten physical”
“Oh, no, Julie. This is your fault. If you had left when I told you to, you’d probably be at

home crying on your pillow about your miserable life. You can barely keep a man.”
“You don’t know anything about me,” I snapped.

“Oh, I know plenty,” she said. “You think you’re so untouchable, but you’re not. You think you have everything under control, but you couldn’t even handle your marriage. It just shows how helpless you are. And you know what? I’m going to make sure you pay for everything you’ve done.”
I glared at her. “Is that a threat?”
“Oh no, dear, don’t be silly. It’s a promise,” Maria said, leaning closer. “You’re going down. I’ll ruin your life the way you ruined mine. I will ruin you in such a way you won’t be able to recover from what I do to you. Just you watch and see.”
“Oh, I’m scared of what you’ll do to me,” I said, pretending to be scared.
“Do you think I would shiver because of what you said? You’re all talk and nothing more. You barely have your life under control. A piece of advice: stop thinking highly of yourself. You’re just a shop attendant now. The sooner you accept it, the better for you,” I said with a smile. Then she tried to hit me, but I caught her hand quickly.
“How dare…”
Enough!!!” A police officer shouted
