I stared at the hospital as I sat in my car, wondering where to go. Tonight had been a total disaster and a stress-filled day.
Julie wasn’t picking up her phone. I had called her so many times that I lost count, but it was no use. Each time, it went straight to voicemail. At first, I thought she was ignoring me, but it seemed she had blocked me because her phone wasn’t ringing anymore.
I tried calling her again, but I got the same response.
“Damn it,” I muttered as I threw my phone.
This was really getting frustrating. If only I hadn’t slept with Melissa, I wouldn’t have been in this damn mess.
A father? I scoffed as I reached for the bottle of whiskey I kept in my car for nights like this. The thought of being a dad didn’t scare me-it was the idea of being a father to Melissa’s baby, being tied to her for the rest of my life because of a baby.
I took a long gulp, not minding the burn of the liquor-I just wanted to shut down these damn thoughts of mine, but apparently, it wasn’t working.
Dropping the bottle, I started my car and drove away from the parking lot. I wasn’t thinking clearly. I ran through red lights, my foot pressing harder on the gas pedal with every mile. I didn’t care about the speeding ticket I might get or the traffic rules I was breaking—I just wanted to see her so badly.
As I arrived at her place, I stumbled out of my car, barely able to stand or walk steadily.
“Julie!” I shouted her name into the quiet street.
I didn’t care about the neighbors. Let them watch. Let them witness how far I could go for her. “Julie, please come out here!”
Julie!!” I shouted over and over again, it shouted louder than the previous ones. I didn’t care how long I had to shout for her to answer me, if I had to shout my lungs out I would do it.
Then I saw a light from the window turned on, then she opened the curtain, as she brought out her head from the window to talk to me.
“Damien, what the hell are you doing? Do you even know what time it is?”
“I don’t care what time it is, please can you listen to hear me out.” I shouted while struggling to stand still. “Julie, please!”

But I couldn’t leave. Not yet. “Julic, I’m not leaving until you listen to me! You mean everything to me, and I—”
She cut me off, closing the curtain and slamming the window shut. A few moments later, the front door opened and there she was
“Have you lost your mind?” she shouted while walking towards me. “What if my daughter was home? Do you know how inappropriate this is?”
I could see how angry and hurt she was.
“I don’t care,” I said as I stumbled closer to her. “I don’t care about anything except you. Julie, I swear I wasn’t using you, Melissa means nothing to me, I made a mistake with her because I just wanted to get you off my mind, you drive me crazy Julie.”.
“Damien, stop,” she said, crossing her arms. “You’re drunk and clearly are not in the right frame of mind. Go home, you have an unborn baby to take care of.”
“I can’t go home!” I shouted. “I can’t go home like this, Julie. Don’t you get it? I never used you, and I am not a player. Julie, the only baby I want to have is the one we will make together.”
Her jaw dropped, and she stared at me, speechless for a moment. Then, she shook her head and stepped back.
“You’re out of your mind,” she said.
“Yes, I am!” I said, grabbing her hand. “And you did this to me. I never once thought anyone would have this much power over me after what happened with Cassandra, but you came along. Julie, you mean so much to me.” I moved closer to her with each word, then leaned in to try to kiss her.
But she wasn’t having it. She yanked her hand away and slapped me twice.
“Get out,” she said, her voice trembling. “Get the hell out, Damien!”
“Julie, please-”
“No,” she interrupted. “Can you please stop this? How can you be so heartless?” she asked, her eyes filled with tears.
“I have been toyed with once, and I am definitely not going to be toyed with twice, Damien. I never want to see you again. And you need to leave, Alex. Right now. Or I swear I’ll call the police,” she said as she turned to leave, but then she turned around.
I wanted to keep talking, to make sure she knew I was dead serious, but the look in her eyes

She turned and walked back into the house, shutting the door behind her. I stood there, hoping she would come back out and tell me she understood me.
“Julie!” I shouted one last time, but there was no response.
The lights turned off, and the house went dark.
There was no use standing here. I staggered back to my car; coming here had been pointless. I had provoked her further. I didn’t know where to go or what to do. I didn’t want to go home in this state of mind.
Without thinking, I started the car and drove. I drove to the hospital to meet Melissa, who was the cause of my problem.
I was back at the hospital once again. I stayed inside the car for a bit, just to sober up. After a few minutes, I headed inside the hospital.
As I reached the room she was in and was about to open the door, I heard Melissa’s voice. Something she said made me stop dead in my tra
cks.
“How long am I going to keep fooling him.into thinking the pregnancy is his?” she said quietly.
Fooling me?
