Chapter 22

Wes's POV

We drive back silently, and I keep Aurora set in my hand. Chess and Bella were dead quiet and I like it that way.

Almost at the dock, I swear I feel Aurora move. Then all of a sudden she starts shaking with laughter.

Eyes wide, I scream almost dropping her body.

"What the fu-"

"Language." Chess teases and I just sit there frozen.

"What? What's happening?" I ask and she smiles sitting up.

"Chess revived me since I was underwater."

"First-aid class finally paid off." He shrugs and I glare at the both of them.

"What? So this was all a joke?"

"Hey, don't blame me Chess came up with it."

"Do you think this is funny? I thought you were dead." Her fave falls.

"Babe i-"

"I don't want to hear it." I stand, brushing her off me and walk next to Bella who was busy glaring at Chess.

It goes dead silent again and this time it was awkward. When we arrived at the dock, Aurora was basically shivering. I grabbed one of the blankets packaged inside and wrapped it around her.

She smiles but I avert my eyes and limp off if the boat pulling it closer to the ground. Chess helps Bella, and I lift Aurora.

As soon as I place her on the ground however, she collapses.

"Ouch." She cries and I roll my eyes.

"What is this some joke too?"

"They stabbed me in my knee." She deadpans and even Bella cringes. I clench my teeth and lift her up, placing her into the vehicle and calling the family doctor to meet us back at my house.

Aurora's POV

Wes was dead set on not speaking to me and I can't help but feel a little guilty.

But you gotta admit it was pretty funny.

And when he said that loved me.

Ohmigosh!

Sitting in the room, Wes's house was huge. The doctor checked up on me and soon he was done.

Wes came in and shut the door behind him. I sat up, grateful to be dry and he pulled the chair and sat next to me. He leaned forward, his chin on his hand, and stared at me.

"When they dropped you into that ocean that was the worst thing they could've ever done." He begins. "You looked so. . . terrified but at the same time. It looked like you knew exactly what would happen and you were coming to terms with it, in those little three minutes, you looked like you were already prepared to die, although scared as hell. I didn't know what else to do so I dived in, hoping to catch you. And I caught glimpses of your face as you descended to the bottom. You don't know how much it hurt to know that I couldn't reach you, to know that you were suffering and I couldn't help you. When Chess came up with your body, I was so relieved. Why would you make a joke out of something like that?"

I gulp as he stares at me.

"It was just supposed to be a joke I mean I'm alive, right? Be happy."

"Be happy? Are you kidding me right now? You don't play with someone's feelings like Aurora." He gets up, rolling his eyes and I sigh.

"Wes-"

"I'm tired. Have a goodnight." He then leaves me in the room alone and I sigh. Plopping back onto the bed.

I didn't mean for him to feel this way, I honestly didn't. It was just supposed to be this old joke.

I wake up.

They get frightened we all laugh.

Now it just backfired in my face
