Chapter 69 It was her
Chapter 69 It was her
A man in a wheelchair slowly made his way toward the stage.
Even seated, his presence was impossible to ignore. His face was sharp and handsome, his posture elegant, and the quiet authority around him made the entire hall instinctively fall silent.
“Uncle!” Oliver called out the moment she saw him and hurried over.
Herbert looked up at her with a soft smile, then leaned slightly toward Gavin and gave a few quiet instructions.
Gavin immediately stepped onto the stage, took the microphone and said in a clear voice,
“From today onward, all expenses of New Hope Orphanage will be fully covered by the Wyatt family. In addition, graduates from the orphanage will be given priority consideration for employment, provided they meet the standards.”
The moment those words left his mouth, the reporters who had been surrounding Ivy instantly turned and rushed toward Gavin.
“Sir, what do you mean by full coverage?”
“Is the Wyatt family taking over sponsorship of the orphanage?”
Oliver stared at Herbert in disbelief.
“Uncle, you…”
Herbert gently took her hand. His fingers wrapped around hers like she was something precious.
“I’ll fulfill your wishes from now on, alright?” he said softly.
Oliver’s eyes grew moist. She bent slightly, about to hug him, when a harsh voice cut through the air.
“Who do you think you are, you cripple? You’ve got some nerve showing off here.”
Ivy’s voice was sharp with anger.
Not only had someone stolen her spotlight, but that someone was with Oliver.
Herbert rarely appeared in public and most of the people present did not recognize him. The Logan family was far from the level of the capital’s top families, so Ivy had no idea who she had just insulted.
A few people in the crowd, however, did know.
They inhaled sharply.
She had just called someone from the Wyatt family a cripple.
Before Herbert could react, Oliver’s expression changed.
She could tolerate insults aimed at herself.
But not at him.
Oliver’s voice turned icy.
“Ivy, do you want to lose your tongue? My uncle can donate his money however he likes. Did you buy this orphanage? Fine. If you’re so generous, why don’t you cover all expenses like he just did? Then I’ll thank you on behalf of the kids.”
Herbert’s eyes softened seeing how fiercely she defended him.
Ivy was momentarily speechless, but she wasn’t ready to lose.
She covered her mouth dramatically.
“Oh, Oliver, are you defending him because you’re being kept by him? Found yourself a sugar daddy? No wonder you’re acting so confident. Unlike me, who actually worked hard and donated to the orphanage for years.”
The crowd murmured.
Some people began nodding.
Back when they were at the orphanage, it was Ivy’s name that had been associated with donations. They had believed it for years.
“So she’s being kept by someone…”
“Ivy really helped us back then…”
“We won’t let outsiders bully you, Ivy!”
Several people actually stepped forward, forming a protective circle around Ivy, as if Oliver and Herbert were the intruders.
Skye stood frozen, her face pale.
Ivy lifted her chin proudly, enjoying the support.
Herbert watched all this calmly.
Almost amused.
They had no idea who they should really be thanking all these years.
In a deep, steady voice, he said,
“Coincidentally, I had someone check the charity association’s official records of donations received by New Hope Orphanage. Let’s take a look at how much Miss Logan has truly donated.”
Gavin tapped his phone and the screen behind the stage lit up.
The hall fell silent.
A chart appeared.
Gavin explained calmly,
“This is public information from the official website. Anyone can verify it.”
“In the early years, donations were sporadic. But starting eight years ago, an anonymous account donated three million every year without fail.”
A wave of whispers spread through the hall.
“As for Miss Ivy’s donation,” Gavin continued, “the record shows 750,000 donated yesterday. Not one million as claimed.”
A collective gasp filled the room.
Ivy’s face went white.
People turned to look at her in disbelief.
“So… who donated all these years?”
The murmurs grew louder.
Ivy tried to recover. “Since it’s anonymous, how do you know it wasn’t me?”
She was gambling that no one could trace it.
Gavin sneered slightly.
“We have identified the real donor.”
He turned his head to Herbert, waiting.
But Herbert didn’t look at him.
He looked at Oliver.
“Oliver, is it alright to reveal it?” he asked gently.
Oliver’s eyes widened.
He knew.
For a moment, she bit her lip, conflicted.
But seeing how far this had gone, she slowly nodded.
Gavin changed the slide.
A name appeared on the screen.
The entire hall went dead silent.
Even the reporters forgot to breathe.
Ivy stared at the screen, her pupils shrinking.
Her body felt like it had fallen into an ice pit.
Because the name displayed clearly under the anonymous account was—
Oliver Peterson.
