Chapter 22 A Sure Thing
Stanley was uncertain.
Although Vincent was always strategic and decisive in his actions, anything related to love was different.
If he only wanted to sleep with Bethany, it would still be manageable, but the fact that he desired both her body and mind made things complicated.
Stanley shrugged and said, "Fine, I'll see what you're capable of."
Bethany was a sure thing for Vincent.
...
On her way home, Bethany reminisced about the years she spent with Clinton, from getting to know each other to being together, and now to their current state of mutual disdain. It was quite nostalgic.
Clinton had changed.
The reason was simple he couldn't get to her, and unwilling to be alone, he found solace in someone else.
That secretary seemed suspicious.
After returning home, Bethany contacted Clinton's assistant, Isaac Bailey, and arranged to meet him for coffee the next day.
They were college classmates and had maintained a good relationship over the years, so Isaac readily agreed.
Bethany had a hunch that she would be able to uncover some secrets tomorrow.
After enduring discomfort for a while, she finally took a shower at home. The dampness in her underwear had been bothering her for quite some time.
Steam quickly filled the entire bathroom as Bethany's thoughts wandered uncontrollably. The pleasure brought by the male doctor seemed vivid, making her blush.
But then, the doctor's domineering face appeared in her mind, dampening her enthusiasm. She turned off the shower, dried herself, and saw a message from him asking if she had arrived home.
Bethany deleted him as a friend without hesitation.
But soon, he called her.
Bethany rejected two calls in a row, but he persisted. Irritated, she answered, "Hello?"
Her voice was extremely cold, so cold that he remained silent for a moment before asking, "Why did you hang up on me?"
Bethany replied indifferently, "Mr. Harper, calling a patient in the middle of the night, don't you think it's presumptuous?"
"Isn't it rude that you just delete me without telling me the reason?" His voice lowered, clearly displeased.
Bethany coldly retorted, "I can't stand your domineering attitude. I don't want anything to do with you anymore. Is there a problem?"
Vincent didn't defend himself but instead asked, "Is your condition not improving?"
Bethany replied icily, "That's my private matter. You don't need to be concerned about it. Furthermore, since we're on this topic, I officially notify you that you're fired."
The word "fired" sounded meaningful.
Their relationship was built on money from the start, even if their treatment plan crossed a line, it was still a mutually beneficial arrangement.
Bethany's unilateral decision to terminate it was reasonable.
Vincent's actions were indeed unsavory, and he had no reason to argue with Bethany. He had anticipated her reaction long ago.
So he simply said, "Ms. Campbell, I need to remind you that my private practice isn't something you can easily obtain. If you want to see me for treatment in the future, it won't just be about money."
Bethany naturally understood his implications.
Unfortunately, Bethany wasn't buying it.
"Mr. Harper, money is the least of your worries, right? I can't climb up to your level, and I'll never ask for your help again." With that, Bethany hung up.
She lit a cigarette, and once her mind calmed down, she pushed aside everything that had happened with that man in recent days.
He was just a doctor.
She didn’t believe that without him, she couldn't recover from her illness.
The same went for Clinton.
Even if this marriage fell apart and the Campbell family couldn't find support, Alvin could abandon her like a piece of trash and give up on her mother.
But she would find a way to support her mother.
But even if they broke up, she needed to figure out what was going on between Clinton and that secretary.
Even if this relationship ended, she couldn't end it in confusion.
Throughout the night, Clinton didn't contact Bethany. The next morning, Bethany went to meet Isaac as planned.
Since Isaac was coming out during work hours, they chose a coffee shop near the Riddle Group, making it convenient for him to return to work.
Isaac was unaware of Bethany and Clinton's breakup, so when he saw Bethany, he said in his usual manner, "Madam, you should be busy preparing for the wedding, yet you have time to meet me for coffee today?"
Bethany didn't clarify but just smiled faintly, "Yes, I'm busy preparing wedding favors. I plan to share some joy with the employees at the company who have a good relationship with Clinton. He's too busy to worry about these things, and since I don't know much about his relationships, I've come to ask for your help."
Isaac chuckled, "You're so thoughtful. When Mr. Riddle marries you, it will bring glory to everyone working under him."
Bethany smiled and casually stirred her coffee, listening to Isaac talk about Clinton's relationships with the employees.
He mentioned many individuals, even some important clients Clinton had met with during business trips, but he didn't mention the secretary.
Bethany didn't rush to expose him and simply said, "Thank you so much, Isaac, for helping me out."
Isaac waved his hand with a smile. "We were classmates, and I've been working under Mr. Riddle for so many years. No need to be polite."
Bethany nodded, then casually mentioned, "But, Isaac, it seems like you forgot someone?"
Isaac was puzzled. "Did I? Who?"
Bethany took a sip of her coffee and said, "Clinton's secretary."
As the words fell, Isaac's face stiffened.
"Mr. Riddle has several secretaries. Which one are you talking about?" Isaac picked up his coffee cup and took several sips in a row.
He pretended to be calm, trying hard to suppress his panic, but Bethany's eyes caught every subtle reaction.
Bethany smiled unabatedly, "Who else could it be? Of course, it's the one Mr. Riddle values the most, that young lady. We attended a party yesterday, and she even went to talk to her boss about work."
Isaac lowered his gaze, his eyes darting around. "Really? I didn't know. I went to see my girlfriend for a date after work yesterday. It must be that the company has been busy with business lately, so they needed to work overtime."
Pausing for a moment, he added, "But Ms. Bernard is a newcomer. How could Mr. Riddle value her? They're not very familiar with each other. You don't need to prepare wedding candy for her."
Bethany nodded slightly and said, "Well, they’re not familiar. Clinton accompanied her to the hospital for a gynecological examination."
At these words, Isaac's hand trembled, and the coffee spilled all over him.
Isaac was wearing a white shirt today, and the brown coffee stains made him look disheveled, attracting strange looks from those around him.
Bethany handed him a tissue, calmly asking, "What are you panicking about?"
Isaac took the tissue and wiped his clothes, arguing, "I'm not panicking. I guess I've been staying up late too much lately, making me feel weak and causing my hands to shake."
He tried to sound tough, but his guilt and panic were difficult to hide in his actions and behavior.
Bethany knew what was going on.
She didn't continue to probe and just smiled lightly, "I was just asking. Alright, you better hurry back to the office and change your clothes."
Isaac was embarrassed, but he persisted, "Bethany, you're about to marry Mr. Riddle soon. Don't drop the ball at this critical moment. Everyone is still looking forward to your wedding favor!"
Bethany raised an eyebrow calmly and said, "I know what to do."
"That's good." Isaac let out a sigh of relief and suggested, "I'll go back to the office. Do you want to come with me to check in on Mr. Riddle?"
