Chapter 21 Coveting
In a dark and secluded corner, the scene from earlier was observed by someone.
Stanley, leaning against a tree trunk, clicked his tongue. "No wonder you went out of your way to pick on Clinton. Turns out you have your eyes on his fiancée."
Beside him, a man in a suit and tie took a drag of his cigarette and hoarsely replied, "Watch your words. From now on, Bethany isn't anyone else's fiancée."
Even though his voice was calm, he couldn't conceal his satisfaction.
Stanley sneered, "And that's all because of you. Vincent, you just ruined their marriage. Aren't you afraid of retribution?"
Vincent raised his hand to take another drag of his cigarette, his expression unchanged. "They are not meant for each other. So I'm just helping them to stay away from the wrong marriage."
He wanted Bethany, even if it meant using any means necessary. If it went against his own wishes, then he might invite retribution.
Stanley reminded him, "But that lady cares a lot about Clinton. Even if you break them up by any means, you might not be able to win her over."
"She doesn't love that guy," Vincent asserted.
Stanley couldn't help but wonder. "How do you know?"
"I have my ways of judging. Bethany has no feelings for him," Vincent replied.
Stanley waved it off. "From what I know, they've been in love since college. If Bethany doesn't feel anything for her fiancé, they couldn't be together for so long."
Vincent fell silent for a moment before extinguishing his cigarette. "Don't worry about that. By the way, I need to discuss something with you."
Stanley became cautious. "Every time you want to discuss something with me, it's never for a good reason. What do you want to trick me into this time?"
Vincent chuckled, "I need to borrow your identity for a while. You'll change your name to one that sounds similar to mine, and we'll say I'm your elder brother."
Stanley raised an eyebrow. "You're just chasing after a girl, and now you want to play cosplay? Why should I sacrifice myself to help you guys?"
Vincent patted Stanley's shoulder. "Didn't I promise to compensate you for your car? Come on, I have a batch of limited-edition goods that have just arrived. Take whatever you want."
Stanley didn't seem impressed. "Are you trying to bribe me with a car? Isn't my name worth anything?"
Vincent smirked, "What do you want as leverage? It's up to you."
"I'm not lacking in money or material possessions. So, what else can you offer me?" Stanley rubbed his chin as if contemplating, and then he suddenly thought of something. "I've got it! My old man arranged a blind date for me. You go in my place."
Stanley wanted to take advantage of the situation. Vincent refused. "I only have dealings with Bethany. I don't even want to look at other women."
Stanley sneered, "You're really hard to impress. Once you're interested, you become a lovesick fool."
Vincent didn't engage. Stanley continued, "I wasn't planning on succeeding with the blind date anyway. Just help me go through the motions."
Vincent remained unmoved.
Stanley decided to drop it. "Fine, forget it then. It's not like I'm the one chasing after women."
"Threatening me?" Vincent squinted.
Stanley nonchalantly responded, "Yes, what can you do to me anyway?"
"I can't do anything to you, but I think if I tell your grandfather about the shady things you did abroad, he might be able to straighten you out for me," Vincent said, reaching for his phone.
Hearing this, Stanley quickly stopped Vincent. "Wait, wait, wait. I just agree with your request, Okay? My good brother, please don't tell my grandfather. He's old and has a weak heart. He can't handle the stress."
Vincent had only wanted to scare Stanley a bit; naturally, he wouldn't make Blake Harper worry about Stanley's mess.
"You should have agreed sooner, instead of dragging it out," Vincent said, putting away his phone.
Stanley was displeased, but threats and bribes were effective tactics against him.
He lit a cigarette and said, "Vincent, do you believe that even with all this effort, they're just having a lover's quarrel and will make up in a couple of days?"
Vincent smirked, and a hint of darkness flashed across his eyes. "And do you believe that this marriage won't happen?"
