Chapter 67: All the Cards
Chapter 67: All the Cards
Eleanor
I watched the entire thing unfold from the comfort of my palace, thanks to technology I saw my team in action all angles. The attorney was by my side calculating as usual while our tech guys did their magic both on and off site. When Catherine confirmed she had it we jumped up and down with so much joy you’d have thought one of us had just win the lottery.
It felt good to see some light at the end of the tunnel. Now it was just a matter of wait and see if Damon was right. The guys went ahead to prepare a tech shield in the office, the laptop was fired up and fully charged by the time Catherine walked in like a boss two guards behind her. She was oozing with confidence. And just like the attorney and I it was a joyous win for her too. We hugged like long time friends who hasn’t seen each other for ages.
“Finally we have it” she showed the drive to me, “The complete chimera”
“This little thing has send a lot of people to the grave”
“Let’s see if it was worth their lives am curious. I need to start thinking about something else” the attorney couldn’t hold his horses.
“Where’s the team leader? This wouldn’t be possible without him”
“Went to handle some business” she put business in imaginary quotes.
The first win was when the disks interlocked perfectly and when the complete drive was locked in the red yellow and green lights went on before the whole screens went dark.
“What’s happening?” My heart sank.
“I don’t know”
“Well do something” I was panicking, that wasn’t a good sign.
“Wait!” The attorney shouted as the screens came back on, the disk started loading despicably slow of course and if that wasn’t enough torture it started updating again. By then I was pacing up and down the room. Tension in my muscles but belief in my heart. Damon was right, he had to be. The future of my business depended on it and I had pissed off enough people already not to have the leverage.
“Why is it taking so long?”
“It’s been off for a long time it has to gather all the data”
“Are you sure we got the right guy in that chair? He has been giving excuses so far” I turned my attention to the attorney.
“Relax angel. Let the man do his job” he dragged me back to the couch , Catherine brought us drinks and it was time to wait again.
No matter how much I tried I couldn’t keep calm as they wanted. I was about to burst out again when the screens lit up with documents and pictures, audio recordings and videos.
“Ooh my God” my jaw dropped as we approached the screen in front of us.
“It’s worse than we thought” the attorney shared my sentiments, “Angel we have the power to change not just the business but trajectory of this country”
“What my father would have wanted. First things first pull up everything on Axel, I want to see what that bald headed bastard had been up to”
Whoever said be careful what you wish for was way ahead of his time. It turned out Axel was a mole and Damon knew about it, everyone else who did or Axel suspected they knew ended up dead. My eyes were wet with tears when I was forced to relieve the day Damon died, it was fresh in my mind and to make it even more painful the call to Axel from one of the assailants that confirmed he indeed planned the murder if his own brother and pinned it on me.
“Print everything on Axel , make a copy of the same in a flash drive and then bring u what you can on Jax”
For his partner in crime, everything was going well until he met with the secretary of state in a secret meeting that definitely promised him what he had always wanted. But what he didn’t know was Axel’s plan to blow him put of the water once they had the chimera. In short Jax was being used. He treaded the loyalty and friendship he had with Knox on exchange for being used as a pawn in war he didn’t know anything about. I was tempted to let him live until it turned out he killed Derrick.
“That bastard”
“But Derrick had switched sides. I don’t know much about crime but switching sides is signing your own death warrant”
“Jax is just insecure. If the egg headed bastard was trusting him ne could have used him to siphon information. He just wasn’t thinking straight”
“How could he when he was obsessed with catching you” Catherine chimed in the conversation.
“Well today is his lucky day. Call Anita tell him to set up a meeting with the two. It’s time to end this then clean our government”
Knox
When Eleanor’s instructions came in my small but perfect hot squad was on its way back. We turned around and drive back to town, crawling with police but no one was going to suspect us with no digital trail. I didn’t have to ask her if it worked, the meeting with Axel and Jax confirmed it. Finally we were going do get our revenge. I had mine already but some two billion dollars in my secret offshore accounts didn’t feel like enough.
The warehouse was strategically located In the middle of nowhere, we could evacuate her in case things turned ugly and try definitely were going to turn ugly. She had been a pain in their asses. The kind of pain that doesn’t go away. We stationed the sniper’s ready and parked get away cars explosives and traps, once we were ready, it was time to get Axel and Jax with all their men in the kill box.
“He is going to come with an entire army” Anita was a bit skeptical about us winning the second round.
“You think we should call an army too?”
“Yes definitely. It’s not safe”
“She has a plan and I trust her….”
“But?” She looked at me her eyes glowing with curiosity.
“I trust you too. Call in some back up. They should be on standby before the guests arrive Speaking of which”
A helicopter was buzzing above our heads and a dozen SUV’s came in from all directions. My men held their positions, it was just Anita and I were surrounded by the bad guys. Once it was safe for the cowards the bird landed and boy did they have powerful friends.
“Are you fuckin kidding me?”
“I can see too. That’s they secretary of state did we bite more than we can chew?”
“No. The chimera thing must be carrying some secrets that are injurious to many people what do we do? Fight?”
“They won’t kill us until they see it”
Our guests finally arrived, Jax looked through me with burrowing eyes. Axel looked confident standing next to one of the most powerful men in the country. To be honest I was a little scared and I hoped Eleanor had a very good plan because with the kind of firepower they had if things went sideways we were all dead.
“You guys know who I am?”
“Yes Mr. Secretary but in this side of the divide we don’t care you’re early”
“My boss and his friends want this handled quickly. Of course you know my boss and you can guess his friends”
“I can. Well. She is not here yet. You gon have to wait inside or outside your choice”
“Who the fuck does the bitch think she is?”
“She is Eleanor Blackheart and right now Mr. Secretary she is the woman who has you by the balls”
Anita’s reminder softened their tone, he waved and the armed guards ran inside to do a quick check of the place disarming our little traps in there in the process. But it was all good. They walked in once it was confirmed to be safe, behind them the few remaining iron serpents and blood reapers together with the Secretary’s private security against just Catherine and I with our friends in the woods. It was a really demoralizing picture.
“When does she show up?”
“At her own time Mr. Secretary. You haven’t been here long. Should we get you something to drink”
“Enough with the jokes Knox. She is not coming isn’t she? She doesn’t have the chimera you’re just stalling to buy her sometime to come up with something” Axel had enough.
“It’s over Knox. Once you give me back my money I’m going to do what I should have done a long time ago” Jax hissed with anger.
My phone vibrated and when I went for it in my pocket more than a dozen guns were pointed in my direction.
“Guys, I’m not stupid it’s just a phone”
They dropped their guns. It was a text from Eleanor and some leverage to keep Axel in check.
“You think it’s a bluff, how about this”
I showed him the
picture of his secret meeting and Axel Reed froze in fear.
