Chapter 24

Anna had warned me; Nightfall harbored peculiar creatures. Regret enveloped me now; I shouldn't have ventured beyond the palace walls. The sounds grew louder, approaching my location with an ominous rhythm.

As the source drew near, I locked eyes with an unusual creature. Resembling a wild furry dog but dwarfing the menacing hounds from the previous night, it was entirely shrouded in fur. The creature's eyes, a deep void of blackness, lacked any semblance of focus. A low growl emanated from its form, a primal response to my presence.

Fear gripped me, and I instinctively retreated, clutching the wooden chair with trembling hands. The ominous growls reverberated through the air, creating an unsettling symphony of dread. Anxious, I stepped backward, heading toward the sanctuary of the palace and the tunnels I had passed through to get here.

To my horror, another growl echoed, this time from behind me. The realization struck like a lightning bolt – there were two of these creatures. Panic set in, and I spun around, my cries betraying my terror. The menacing animals circled me with calculated precision, closing in like predators cornering their prey. Each step I took only backed me further into a tightening circle, and I found myself trapped in a desperate struggle against the encroaching corner.

The deafening growls resonated through the air as the menacing creatures lunged towards me, a primal symphony of impending danger. An involuntary scream tore from my throat as I crumpled to the ground, bracing myself for the searing pain, awaiting the teeth and claws but it never came.

With cautious uncertainty, I peeled my eyes open, greeted not by pain but by a surreal sight. The The once-menacing creatures that had charged at me now lay motionless at the opposite end, defeated or immobilized, it was unclear.

The atmosphere shifted, becoming oppressively hot, suffocating any semblance of ease in the air. Gasping for breath, I retreated, eyes wide with a mix of fear and bewilderment.

There was a third one.

Before me stood a huge creature, towering over its defeated counterparts, a living embodiment of strength and ferocity. Its massive form, a majestic shade of grey, exuded an imposing presence that dwarfed the earlier assailants.

Seated on the ground, I found myself at a loss, with the sheer enormity of it.

The two beasts, now on their feet, shook off the remnants of their previous struggle. With menacing snarls and bared teeth, they lunged at me once again. However, the colossal grey hound intervened, positioning itself in front of me as a shield. It was apparent that this majestic wolf had taken on the role of my protector.

A fierce scuffle erupted between the imposing newcomer and the two smaller assailants. The air crackled with the intensity of their clash, each growl and snap echoing through the secluded field. I cowered against the wall, both terrified and mesmerized by the spectacle unfolding before me. The grey hound fought with a grace that belied its enormous size.

"Run, Jasmine," my mind screamed, but my body remained frozen, anchored in place. I couldn't tear my eyes away from the unfolding spectacle. The grey wolf exhibited a stunning display of precision and swiftness, navigating the skirmish with an almost effortless grace. It stood there, composed and unruffled, as if dealing with the two adversaries was a trivial task.

The first fell down weakly to the floor and the second was grabbed by the neck and flung away, close to where I stood, it's massive weight caused the ground to shake as it dropped heavily to the floor.

I rose to my feet, legs trembling with fear. The other creature, my unlikely savior, observed me with an intensity that left me uneasy. Had it saved me from the clutches of the other ones to become its own dinner? As it cautiously approached, I began to back away, my steps measured.

This creature before me was colossal, a majestic sight to behold. Its eyes, a piercing gaze that seemed to see through me, held me in a silent standoff. As I stood motionless, I couldn't help but marvel at its beautiful grey coat. What mysterious creature had Nightfall concealed within its walls? It positioned itself directly in front of me, and I dared not breath. My eyes met its, and strangely, the gaze lacked the cruelty one would expect from a ruthless predator. There was an unsettling calmness in its eyes, as if it were observing me with a curiosity that mirrored my own.

My fear, entwined with an inexplicable fascination, spurred me to approach the majestic creature. Each step I took was a deliberate and cautious advance toward the towering presence that could easily end my existence with a single blow. Yet, against all logic, a strange pull drew me nearer.

As I got closer, I noticed a familiar mark on its magnificent fur, a symbol I had seen back in the castle. It was the same emblem adorning the royal palace, and even the knights bore this symbol. Realization struck me; this creature had to be some kind of guardian. The desire to touch it overwhelmed me, and I hesitated, itching to feel its fur beneath my fingertips.

To my surprise, it seemed to sense my yearning. Our eyes locked once more, and I felt an inexplicable connection, as if the creature invited me closer. As I moved in, its hot breath caressed my face, gently pushing my hair aside. A strange reassurance enveloped me – it wasn't going to harm me. Testing the waters, I inched even closer, cautiously raising my hand. A low growl resonated.

I cautiously withdrew my hand, hesitating for a moment, and then gently raised it once more. Holding my breath, I dared to stroke the creature's fur. To my surprise, it was incredibly soft. Anna's words echoed in my mind—Nightfall indeed harbored some astonishing creatures, and here was one adorned with the kingdom's symbol.

Growing bolder, I approached the majestic creature, running my arms through its thick mane. There was an uncanny familiarity, It was as if this creature held a connection to the masked Knight. As I continued my gentle exploration, the creature nuzzled closer, seemingly welcoming and yearning for more of my touch.

*************

The knights meticulously searched every nook and cranny of the expansive castle, but there was still no sign of the maiden or the wolves. Only one untouched spot remained—the last end of the castle, a place inhibited and closed off completely. Fear gripped the hearts of the search party at the mere thought of stepping into that territory. It was where Zeus, the legendary creature, roamed freely.

The whole expanse of the part of that land was completely avoided. It was well-known domain of Damon. When he was younger, he would spend hours and even days within its confines. This part of the castle had become an enigmatic realm, untouched even when Damon was away at battle. The knights hesitated, contemplating the risks involved in venturing into that forbidden territory.

The knights hesitated, reluctant to approach that forbidden end of the castle. It was as if they were standing on the threshold of the devil's lair itself. Devin, feeling an anxious hunch, rode determinedly towards that very place. Despite checking all other locations, his instincts told him she had to be there.

Devin couldn't shake the nagging thought that the girl might already be dead. If she had ventured into that garden, encountering Zeus would mean almost certain doom. As Devin rode faster, a sinking feeling intensified with each step closer.

The scene unfolded before Devin as he approached from a distance, a lady with long flowing hair cornered by Zeus. Urgency gripped him, he had the urge to shift, but still, against the sheer size and strength of Zeus, even his transformation would offer little advantage

The girl stood in a corner, seemingly entranced by the massive wolf before her.

From a distance, Devin observed the intriguing encounter unfold. The two figures, seemingly in a trance, engaged in a calm exchange. His pace quickened as he saw her inching closer to Zeus, extending her arm as if drawn to the magnificent creature.

In an instinctive response, Devin called out urgently, warning, approaching Zeus too closely was deadly. Yet, she continued her gentle interaction, her hand now caressing the fur of the majestic creature.

Closing the distance, Devin approached cautiously, confirming in his mind that this must be Princess Olivia. Her calm demeanor, aligned with the given description, painted a vivid picture as she stood with her back to him.

The colossal creature appeared surprisingly calm, as if satiated by the interaction. The girl Devin aimed to rescue remained blissfully unaware of the looming danger.

"My Lady," he called out, his voice carrying a sense of urgency as he threw a cautious glance at Zeus. "We should leave now," he insisted, taking deliberate steps closer to them.

However, the captivating scene held the two in its spell. The girl, seemingly oblivious to Devin's presence, remained engrossed in the majestic creature, a thoughtful expression playing on her face. It was as if she were under a mesmerizing enchantment, captivated by the creature.

Increasing his volume, Devin called out, "My Lady. My Lady," and eventually resorted to a desperate yell, "Princess Olivia!" Her abrupt awakening from the enchantment met his anxious gaze, a moment of realization dawning upon her.

"We should leave now," Devin urged, his gaze shifting between Olivia and Zeus, the massive creature.

"This animal..." Olivia began, her tone surprisingly calm considering the circumstances.

"Is it a guardian of some kind?" she inquired, her curiosity evident. Devin studied Zeus once again; an unusual calmness enveloped the usually ferocious beast. Physical contact and people typically fueled his aggression, yet he seemed to relish Olivia's gentle touch.

"Is it a pet?" she probed further. Despite her initial apprehension towards its size, it harboured no hostility. Zeus, in turn, nuzzled closer to her, displaying a dog-like affection on a massive scale. As she continued to stroke him, the majestic creature even began to sniff her, with a docile demeanor.

Devin stood there in bewilderment. The audacity of this girl to refer to the most dangerous creature in all seven kingdoms as a pet left him utterly perplexed. She appeared strangely at ease, reluctant to part ways with the magnificent beast that could easily tear her apart.

"We should leave now," he insisted, closing the distance to usher her away. However, Zeus, the colossal creature, responded instantly with a warning grunt, exhaling hot steam from his nose as he circled around Jasmine, creating a barrier between her and Devin. Sensing the danger, Devin stepped back cautiously.

"Please," he urged, concern etched on his face. "Everyone's looking for you."

"Well, goodbye," Jasmine said, her hand reaching up to touch Zeus one last time. "And thank you." She expressed her gratitude, leaning close to the creature before turning to leave.

The majestic beast stood in silence, its eyes fixed on her departing figure, a subtle air of gratitude lingering in the atmosphere.

Zeus, however, reacted immediately, emitting a low grunt with hot steam billowing from his nose. He circled around Jasmine, creating a barrier between her and Devin, who instinctively stepped back.
