Fractures
Fractures
The small, sterile room in the campus security building smelled faintly of bleach and stale air.
Harsh fluorescent lights buzzed overhead, casting cold beams on the faces of Lucas and Liam as they sat slumped on the narrow metal bench of the holding cell.
Graham sat beside them, his posture tense, eyes flicking between the twins and the two girls standing just outside the bars.
Lily stood closest to the cell. Her usual aura of poise was gone, replaced by barely-contained fury.
Behind her, Maya hovered like a storm cloud, arms crossed, lips pressed into a bitter line.
“You absolute idiots!” Lily’s voice cracked like a whip, cutting through the cold, stale air. Her words reverberated off the concrete walls. “You told me you didn’t lay a hand on Ethan. You lied to my face. Do you know how stupid you’ve made me look? How humiliated I feel right now?”
Lucas’s bruised face crumpled.
“Lily, we—”
“Don’t you dare start,” she snapped, pointing a shaking finger at him. Her voice was low but dangerous. “I trusted you. I believed you. And you spat on that trust!”
Liam swallowed hard. He met her eyes with raw guilt.
“Lily… we were just so tired. Tired of Ethan always scheming, always getting away with everything. We thought if we could… make him pay, even just a little, he’d stop.”
“Make him pay?” Lily’s voice went shrill. “You thought beating him half to death would fix things? That’s not protecting me—that’s destroying yourselves. Destroying us!”
Maya’s eyes flashed with cold fury as she took a step forward.
“And don’t think I’ve forgotten about you, Graham,” she hissed, turning her glare on him like a blade. “You stood by and let this happen. You’re lucky I’m only letting Lily yell at them.”
Graham opened his mouth, but no words came. His shoulders slumped, his usually warm brown eyes dull with regret.
“Please,” Graham tried, his voice hoarse, “this isn’t helping anyone. Yelling won’t fix it. We need to think—”
“Think?” Lily rounded on him like a storm. “You all should have thought before you turned this into a circus! You know what Ethan’s like! You gave him everything he needed to ruin you—and me.”
Lucas looked down at his hands.
“We did it for you, Lily. We only wanted to keep you safe,” he whispered, voice breaking with pain. “Ethan’s dangerous. You know it.”
Liam’s voice joined, choked with desperation.
“He’s obsessed with you. He’s been obsessed since day one. We just wanted him to back off.”
“By putting him in the hospital?” Lily let out a sharp, hollow laugh. “That’s not protection. That’s giving him ammunition. You idiots handed him exactly what he wanted!”
Suddenly, the air shifted with the distant echo of footsteps down the hall.
Ethan stepped into the room, bruised, bandaged, one arm held in a sling.
His mouth twisted into a smug smile as he scanned the scene: Lucas and Liam behind bars; Lily and Maya, fierce but helpless.
“Well, well, well,” Ethan drawled, his voice a soft, mocking purr that filled every corner of the room. He leaned against the doorframe, feigning casual indifference as his eyes settled on the twins. “Look at you two. Big bad wolves locked in a cage.”
“Get. Out.” Lucas’s voice was low, vibrating with barely contained rage. His jaw muscles flexed dangerously.
But Ethan ignored him completely.
“You know, Lily, I never wanted it to come to this. But maybe now you’ll see who they really are.”
“Don’t,” Lily growled, voice trembling. Her hands curled into fists at her sides. “Don’t you dare pretend you’re some noble victim.”
“Oh, Lily,” Ethan said, his tone turning silky. “They beat me. They lied to you. They’ve been controlling you since the day you met them. This is who they are—violent, possessive brutes.”
Liam leapt up, grabbing the cell bars so hard they rattled.
“Shut your mouth! You don’t know anything about us or what we feel for her.”
Ethan’s smug grin widened.
“I know enough. I know she deserves someone who’ll cherish her, not treat her like property.”
Lily stepped closer. Her voice dropped to a dangerous whisper.
“You think this makes you look good? You think I don’t see what you’re doing? You orchestrated this entire situation. You used them lashing out as a chance to make yourself look like the hero.”
Ethan’s jaw tightened, his eyes flicking with the faintest crack of anger.
“I didn’t make them attack me. That was their choice. Their mistake.”
Lily’s voice rose, wild with anger.
“You provoked them! You wanted this! You practically begged for it so you could come here and do… this. This disgusting show.”
Ethan stepped closer, his eyes locked on hers.
“Or maybe I’m just the only one willing to tell you the truth: they don’t love you. They just want to control you.”
“You shut your mouth!” Liam barked, his voice thunderous. He shook the bars violently, the entire cell rattling.
Ethan turned to him, eyes gleaming with cruel amusement.
“Aww, look at you—so protective. Or is it possessive?”
Maya’s voice cut through, sharp as a blade.
“Ethan, you need to leave before I do something you’ll regret.”
But Ethan’s eyes never left Lily’s.
He leaned forward, so close she could smell the tang of the hospital on him.
“It’s okay, Lily. I know they’ve brainwashed you. I know you think they love you. But you’re just a shiny toy they want to keep from everyone else.”
Lily’s entire body shook. Rage flooded her veins.
Her hand came up, drawn back, fingers trembling with the promise of a slap that could shatter bones.
Ethan’s eyes widened slightly, but he held his ground, a smirk playing at the corners of his split lip.
The room held its breath. The hum of the fluorescent lights sounded deafening.
Lily’s hand sliced forward—only to stop an inch from Ethan’s bruised cheek.
A pale, slim hand had closed around Lily’s wrist in mid-air.
Everyone froze.
Lena stood there, suddenly appearing out of nowhere.
Her breathing was shallow but controlled, as if she had sprinted across the entire campus to get here.
Maya’s eyes widened. Graham’s mouth dropped open. Lucas and Liam both stilled completely, as if their hearts had stopped.
Lily’s eyes were wide, wild, darting from Lena’s face to Ethan’s smug expression, to the shocked faces of everyone in the room.
The air felt impossibly thick, heavy with rage and confusion.
