Chapter 32

Chapter 32
How beautiful the little wolf cub was.
Behind the curtain of water caught on the jagged rocks halfway down the cliff, the creature's terrified eyes looked upwards and downwards, searching for a way out to no avail.
One look at the little frightened thing, and she knew in her heart she couldn't leave the trapped wolf club out there.
Taking deep deaths, she steadied her nerves and whispered to herself, "You can do this."
It took all her courage for her to begin looking for a safer way up.
Up, up, up she went, one stone at a time.
'If mother saw me now, she would be proud.' Jane thought, thinking it funny how it was only in her separate hour of need that she felt more homesick than before.
"Almost there... almost there..."
She whispered, falling into the temptation of looking down.
Well, she probably shouldn't have done that because now her legs had turned jelly and she began feeling her strength leave her.
Woof!
The little cub barked out again, as if afraid she would take a bad tumble down.
With a smile of reassurance, she told the little guy she was alright, feeling the misty sprays from the waterfall lightly tap her face.
She wanted to wipe her eyes but knew that was a luxury for later.
All right.
"I've got this!"
Jane felt energized from a single at the cute cub.
Daring not to look down, Jane counted sheep in her heart while flashing a reassuring smile to the frightened little cub from time to time.
Yes! Yes!
She was just a few more reaches away.
Reaching the rocky edge and struggling to pull herself up despite her failing strength.
Ahhhhh~
Jane looked down at a few falling pebbles of stone and couldn't help but swallow hard.
She had been trying to pull herself up just when her hand missed a step. She thought it would be too late for her but was surprised to find something tugging on her sleeves.
"Little guy!" Jane exclaimed, looking up to see the little guy grabbing her sleeves with teeth.
Despite its fear for her and her obvious weight being too much for the little guy to bear, it still came to her rescue.
Grrrrrrrr~
It grabbed her sleeves as hard as it could, buying Jane the time to advise herself and finally climb up the jagged rocky cliff edge.
"Little guy... are you okay?"
Massaging the little guy's fur, Jane was amused seeing its cautious actions, though it enjoyed her hands running against its fur.
"Duplicity." She teased, holding it closer to her chest and petting it lovingly.
"My, my... I've never seen such beautiful fur before. Little guy, you must be very famous in your pact. Just look at how beautiful you are?"
As though understanding her words, the little guy wised its eyes animatedly, kicking her cheeks so much she thought they would rub off.
Well, wolves can't understand human speech so she felt it must've been happy because of her pampering.
"Alright. Alright, little one. Enough licking, you're ticking me. I'm sure your mother must be worried sick, looking for you. So why don't we go down and search for her?"
Awoo~
The little cub agreed, bobbing its head severely, but soon froze, before shaking its head sideways and backing away from the jagged cliff in fear.
"Little guy, are you afraid of heights?"
Seeing the cub's ears, shoulders and entire demeanor droop pitifully, Jane caressed under its chin to cheer it up.
"Don't be ashamed little one. No one is perfect. Everyone has their fears and worries… Maybe you fear heights, but you excel in other things compared to your peers. Seeing as you managed to get up here on your own, isn't this an accomplishment on its own?"
Jane felt she must be crazy for reasoning with a wolf.
Although it seemed ridiculous, she felt her words were getting to the cub.
Slowly, it raised its ears and strayed at her with glistening eyes, licking her cheeks again.
How warm...
Jane almost had an inkling to take it back and raise it as her own. But that thought soon vanished when thinking its mother and family would be looking for it by now.
Who knows if doing so would invite more trouble to her already delicate situation?
Tapping its nose, she sighed happily at the little thing.
"Cub, you sure are amazing. Just look at how much you've brightened my day. I wish I could stay longer with you but we must go."
With that, she loosened the ropes around her waist that served as belts to shape the large gown she was wearing, before carrying the cub and acting him into her dress from the top.
Awooo~
The cub acted shy but slowly settled down with its head picking out her front collar.
Like that, woman and wolf cub prepared to descend.
"Don't worry cub, it will be fine. As they say, it's easier going down than going up."
Awo?
The cub tilted its head in confusion as if asking... who says that?
Well, Jane was no longer shocked by the smartest the cyber displayed.
For a moment, she felt she was communicating with another human, but that's just ridiculous.
It's obviously a cub... a cute little wolf pup!
.
Recalling her movements earlier, Jane cautiously moved downward, one rock at a time.
At this time the wolf cub also questioned down, staring at her movements with unprecedented focus.
At times, it would look down to gauge the distance left, and other times it would look at her feet and hands, only barking if she was about to make a wrong move.
But sometimes, the universe liked to pull pranks on people, watching them fall to rock bottom.
Jane couldn't believe it, seeing her body fall backward while holding the broken-off rock in her hand.
Was it crying?
Awoooo~
The cub panicked, feeling Jane trying to take it out.
It bit her clothes mid-air, but Jane too was relentless, swearing that even if she had to die, she would throw it at a safer distance, making sure it didn't smash on the rocks below.
Seeing the cub fly further from her, Jane couldn't help recalling her childhood flash before her eyes.
"Well, I guess it's true what they say. When death is near, your whole life flashes."
Looking at her body that was about to hit the rocks, Jane knew her time had come.
1, 2, 3...
Eh? Where was the pain? Why did she feel nothing?
More importantly... isn't this scene very familiar?
Opening her eyes, she was shocked to find herself in the arms of a very handsome and burly man.
"Alexander?"
