Chapter 20

Chapter 20
With tranquility returned, everyone knew there would be no room for any more distractions.
Alexander tapped his fingers on his armrest, his gaze was frosty. "No more games, English... Are ye ready to talk?"
Clenching her fists, Jane nodded hard. No one would believe her ridiculous story. With how God-focused today's era, any form of belief or sorcery was bound to get her killed.
"My name is Jane Taylor of English descent."
English?
Though many already knew she was English, hearing her confirm it made them show an even more vigilant stance. It's no secret the people in their clan, and even those in Scotland, did not like those pretentious English so much, especially the soldiers who went on battles against them often.
"My father is a simple farmer and my mother is a good wife. But unlike other Englishmen, we live in seclusion, oblivious to the outside world." Jane said, putting up a convincing front.
She was lying. She grew up in a very isolated home on the outskirts of the nearby city.
Her parents owned the entire hillside, which was seemingly passed down from generation to generation.
Her family was also a strange one. No matter the generation, people in their family could only birth no more than twice.
If they wanted more children, they better pray each birthing resulted in twins or triplets. But in recent times since the 19th century, none of her ancestors have given birth to more than a single child, all of which were girls.
Thus, the house she grew up in, alongside the enormous land they owned, had been passed down from daughter to daughter.
Animals, including werewolves, could pick up certain auras and truths. As Jane spoke, everyone felt she told the truth.
"As for how I came to your land... all I can say is that a madman sent me over!" Everyone felt Jane's hate for the peculiar man, as she gritted her teeth whenever she mentioned the man.
"Believe me. I didn't mean to trespass. But since I'm here, I can only tell you I mean no harm"
Puffing out her chest and straying at Alexander, she boldly pointed his way.
"If you are truly the laird in charge of Mackay lands, then Sir Alexander Mackay, I swear on my father's lie that I'm only here to protect you!"
"_"
1, 2, 3...
"Bahahahahahahahahahahaha~"
The entire congregation was busting out in laughter, some holding their bellies from expressions of laughter pains, while others couldn't help dropping to the floor and laughing till tears streamed down their cheeks.
"Hahahahahahahah~ Did you hear that? Someone has come to protect our Laird."
"Oh, my God! This is the funniest thing I've heard since little Mcgregar fell into the well."
"No. No! I can't take it anymore. I've laughed so hard that my chest has begun to ache."
"Bahahahhahahahahahaha~"
Everyone felt the lass had the makings of a true court jester. It takes talent to make them, a tough crowd, laugh so hard.
Damn.
They wished their brothers in arms, who escorted the women and children for the festival, we're here now to listen to the lass's jokes.
Even Gwen couldn't help politely turning away and chuckling to no end.
Protect their laird? What a big joke.
Their laird was probably the strongest existence in the world. Even the current king of Scotland, who by the way is his leader, had to thread wisely when dealing with their laird. So don't blame them for not believing that a mere human with soft hands, no training and no visible marks of heavy work would be able to protect their laird.
They weren't kidding when they said her body was soft and clean like a baby's buttocks.
Even Noble women in this period learned a few hard skills that left one or two calluses on their hands.
Even how the woman scrubbed during baths would at least leave a few marks on the body.
No matter how good they took care of themselves, the sun would also tan them considerably. But as they said, Jane was too fair, and top devoid of any obvious marks.
Look. Even passing by bushes could leave scratches on others. But apart from the recent scratch lines she attained during her journey here, they couldn't find ang old healing marks of that sort on her, proving that she must've indeed been living an overly pampered and seclusive life alongside her parents.
They even wondered if she had ever taken a single step out of her bedroom chambers for not to be so fair, soft, and without any old wounds.
All this only backed her story of living in seclusion even more, or else how could she be this way?
There was also the fact that she kept looking at them as well as the bed, tables, and chairs in awe, as though this was her first time seeing these items.
Their stone buildings might be magnificent, but the majority of tables and chairs were ordinary, to say the least.
'What a strange lass.' The chubby Elder Callen thought rubbing his chin playfully.
Though what the lass said was funny, he could sense she spoke the truth.
Elder Cullen leaned closer to Alexander. "Laird. Indeed, she might be here to protect ye... but from what?"
"Yes, laird." Dugo chipped in. "This was the real question."
"Hmmm..." A smoke curved across Alexander's fine mouth. "Seeing how the lass has tried her wee best to hide this matter, do ye think with her stubborn nature she would be willing to say it now?"
"This..." Agnus' face turned distorted, agreeing that the woman, though looking soft, was a hard nut to crack.
They could torture her till she spilled the beans, but the lass seemed like the sort who would tune even more difficult if they pushed her to a corner.
What's more, if she was truly their ally, 'tis not their way to torture one who seeks to protect them.
Dugo raised his brow, seemingly intrigued. "Laird, are ye thinking of keeping hostage in Mackay lands?"
"Hmmmm... But, how would the lass know she's a hostage if she can go anywhere on the lands?"
A spark of amusement swirled in Alexander's deep eyes.
"To seek the truth, we must observe the lass in her most natural state. Sooner or later, we will get answers!"
