Chapter 19
Chapter 19
Jane felt her heart pounding so hard it almost flew out her chest. Seeing everyone's vigilant eyes on her, she knew that if she said the wrong thing, she might be killed on the spot by the majority.
These weren't modern times when live execution and killing were readily accepted.
For the greater good, these people won't blink an eye if she was hung or beheaded. Standing before the massive audience, Jane felt like a fish waiting to be gutted. But before she could speak, an aggressive voice bellowed, causing the already tense atmosphere to turn grimmer.
"Laird!"
It was a stunning girl roughly about her age. The girl had golden hair that cascaded over her shoulders, and a pair of sharp eyes that could freeze a lake.
Hell! If eyes could kill, Jane would be dead by now. With trembling shoulders, the strange girl stared at her murderously.
"Laird! Just look at her! What good things can this vixen say? She's a spy! So what's the point of listening to whatever lies she has to spew?"
"Delilah is right, Laird." One of the ladies behind the golden-haired girl supported, as Delilah continuously stared at Jane haughtily.
'Vixen! How dare you seduce my man? Do you know how many tears I've been eyeing the Laird?' Delilah wished she could sink her selfish claws deep into Jane's neck, dropping her to shreds.
Delilah couldn't count how many women she had killed over the years because of the Laird. She, like everyone in the clan, knew the Laird had a destined partner. But so what?
She, Delilah, was the most beautiful wolf and unique wolf with golden hair and eyes that made her suitors fight for her favor.
However, no matter how many people sought her hand, she rejected them all, feeling that she was the destined partner the heavens had kept aside for the Laird.
Yes!
It wasn't revealed probably because the heavens were waiting for her to grow up. Over the years, Delilah came up with all sorts of thoughts to brainwash herself into thinking she was his destined bride.
For they, werewolves, could find anyone in their pack to marry. Only the Lairds had to marry their destined partners ordained by the heavens. These were the partners the heavens predicted would allow peace, love, and prosperity to foster in.
Delilah flipped her hair arrogantly, thinking of all she had accomplished over the years.
Firstly, to match the Laird, she worked extremely hard to turn herself into the ideal wife-material befitting for his status.
She felt that since the management of the entire household would soon fall on her shoulders, she should learn management and other abilities to complement the laird. Other than that, she learned much about English and Scottish traditions and ballroom rules, so she could accompany the laird in the future and make herself known as his one true love.
Standing shoulder to shoulder and dancing under the watchful eyes of the many envious ladies, is enough to make her dream of her fairytale love life.
As a little girl, she dreamt of being Alexander's detained partner. A werewolf Laird can only be with a Werewolf from the clan. So who else but she is the right candidate?
Of course, to keep things this way, she secretly slaughtered any who showed too much interest in the laird. Most of her victims were those overly confident English women who shamelessly threw themselves at her man.
Her kill count was over 30 now, and the Laird knew nothing about it. This was a secret she was willing to take to her grave since, during the killing and torturing, she had transformed into a frightening werewolf in front of her victims before killing them.
For the clan, they were consequences for intentionally showing one's true self to outsiders.
As for the women, Delilah did not feel guilty for killing them. Everything she did was for love. So it was justifiable! After all, love conquers all.
In the face of love, everything wrong is right.
Looking at Jane, a cold light flickered through Delilah's eyes.
The rumors she heard dying these past few days, made her heart boil.
What was this? The laird was anxious for a female outsider? She even shared a horse with him and there were rumors of the Laird showing 'care for the despicable vixen too?
Heh-Heh-Heh-Heh.
'It looks like I'll be adding another to my list of dead... Vixen! Don't blame me for being cruel... You'll get what's coming to you. That I can assure!'
"That's enough, Delilah!"
Alexander's voice clapped within the room like a thundering bolt.
Seeing the beads of sweat on Jane's forehead, how can Alexander not feel distressed? Delilah had purposefully aimed her killing aura at Jane, making the poor lass breathe heavily.
"T'would seem I've been going easy on you over the years."
Delilah's eyeballs grew red and watery at a visible rate, disbelief written on her face. "My laird, you yell at me because of this outsider?"
Gwen rolled her eyes, seemingly tired of Delilah's many antics. It's no secret that she and Delilah didn't like each other one bit.
"Oh, would you give it a rest, you brainless woman! If you weren't so daft, you would know 'tis not the time to jump about like a court jester."
Jane almost clapped in supper, seeing Gwen deal with Delilah.
From the time Delilah called her a vixen, she sensed the girl's unusual feelings for Alexander. But what did it have to do with her, an innocent bystander? She didn't do any seduction she was secretly accused of, okay?
Gwen scoffed at Delilah's distorted face. "How childish. What are you? Five? No! Even five-year-olds know not to behave like you!"
"You watch your tongue, Gwen!" Delilah exuded, forgetting her grievances. "Just because you're a healer, doesn't mean I can't treat you!"
"Oh? Do you want to take it outside? Because I can go whenever you're ready!"
"Pooh! Do you think I'm scared of you? If you want to fight, then fight!"
"Enough!" Alexander bellowed. "Delilah! Leaven now!"
"But..."
"Don't test me, Delilah." Alexander's voice was calm but was enough to cause Delilah to feel a shiver crawl up her spine.
The worst feeling was having the man you love send you away because of another woman. And why does that bitch, Gwen, have to stay while she leaves?
Woooooooo~
With a never-ending stream of tears, Delilah gave one last glaring look at Jane before running out in despair, bringing the hall back to its original quiet state.
Phew.~
Finally, she was gone.
Many released a collective sigh of relief, focusing their attention back on Jane.
Who was she and why was she here?
