Pack Whispers
Pack Whispers
Back at the main camp, wolves gathered in small groups, talking in low voices. The air was tense. News had spread quickly about what happened during the truth spell—about Darius turning into a shadow monster, about Kael's secret Omega blood, and most of all, about Elias's strange blue fire.
Luna, a young wolf with copper hair, pressed her ear against the meeting tent where the pack masters were talking.
"He's dangerous!" shouted one elder. "No Omega should have that kind of power!"
"But the prophecy—" another started.
"Prophecies can be wrong!" the first elder cut in. "What if he brings destruction instead of salvation?"
Luna gasped. They were talking about Elias Nightshade, the Omega with midnight-blue hair who could control the elements. Everyone had seen his power burst during the truth spell ceremony.
Suddenly, a hand grabbed Luna's arm, pulling her away from the tent. She looked up to see Thorn, Kael's second-in-command, frowning down at her.
"Eavesdropping is rude, pup," he said.
Luna's face went red. "I was just... I wanted to know what's going. Is it true? Is Elias really that powerful?"
Thorn's face eased. "Come with me. There's a pack meeting starting soon anyway."
They walked toward the middle of camp where more wolves were gathering. Luna could hear the whispers all around her.
"My cousin saw him lift rocks with his mind..."
"I heard he can control fire and water at the same time..."
"Did you know Kael has Omega blood? How can we trust him now?"
The whispers stopped when Thorn led Luna to the front of the crowd. The pack elders had come out of their tent and stood in a line, their looks grave. Among them was Seraphina, her silver hair twisted and her clothes torn. She had returned to camp alone.
Elder Maya, the oldest dog in the pack, stepped forward. Her white hair shone in the morning light.
"Brothers and sisters," she called out. "We face dark times. Darius has revealed his true nature as a Void Walker, a creature of shadow who wants to use Elias Nightshade's power for evil."
Gasps and worried comments spread through the crowd.
"Is it true about Elias?" someone yelled. "Can he really control all the elements?"
Elder Maya nodded slowly. "It looks so. Such power has not been seen in an Omega for a thousand years."
"And Kael?" another wolf called out. "Did he really hide his Omega blood from us?"
Before Elder Maya could answer, Seraphina stepped forward. Her violet eyes swept over the crowd.
"Kael Stormcrest protected my brother when others would have hurt him," she said firmly. "Yes, he has Omega blood. And yes, my brother has unusual skills. But right now, they're our only hope against the Void Walker."
Some wolves nodded, but others looked unsure. A tall wolf with gray lines in his beard pushed to the front.
"How can we trust an Alpha who lied to us for centuries?" he asked. "And why should we risk our lives for an Omega who might destroy us all?"
"Because the prophecy—" Seraphina began.
"The prophecy could mean anything!" the gray-streaked wolf interrupted. "I say we banish them both!"
Many wolves yelled in agreement. Others argued back. The noise grew until Elder Maya had to shout for quiet.
"Enough!" she called. "We will decide on this matter. But first, let us hear from someone who was there when Darius showed himself."
She pointed to a young wolf who stepped forward nervously. Luna recognized him as Ren, a quiet Omega who worked in the healing room.
"I saw everything," Ren said, his voice shaking a little. "Darius wasn't just any wolf. When the truth spell forced him to show himself, he turned into something... wrong. His eyes went red, and his body became like smoke."
Ren shuddered at the memory. "He admits to killing Elias's parents. And when Kael tried to protect Elias, that's when I saw it—their powers merged. The blue and gold light pushed back the darkness."
The crowd was silent now, hanging on Ren's every word.
"I believe in the prophecy," Ren continued, getting braver. "When shadow and light join, they will save us all. Kael and Elias are our only hope."
As the wolves began to talk again, a commotion started at the edge of camp. Everyone turned to see three figures coming from the trees—Kael, Elias, and a bruised and bloodied wolf Luna didn't recognize.
The crowd parted as they neared. Elias looked tired but his mercury eyes were awake, scanning the faces around him. Kael walked protectively at his side, his golden eyes daring anyone to make a move against them.
"Kael!" Elder Maya called. "We were just discussing your... situation."
"My situation?" Kael's voice was cold. "You mean the fact that I was born with both Alpha and Omega blood? Or the fact that I'm linked to the most powerful Omega in centuries?"
Elias put a hand on Kael's arm, calming him. Then he stepped forward.
"I know you're afraid of me," Elias said, his voice clear and strong. "I understand. I'm afraid of my skills too. But I'm not your enemy. Darius is."
The gray-streaked wolf pushed forward again. "Why should we believe you? Why should we risk everything for you?"
"Because if you don't," said the bleeding stranger beside Kael, "we'll all die."
"This is Marcus," Kael explained. "He fled from Darius. He has news."
Marcus looked around at the crowd, his eyes haunted. "Darius is no longer a wolf. The Void Walker has almost fully taken over. He plans to perform an old ritual during the second moon rising—tomorrow night."
"What kind of ritual?" Elder Maya asked.
"He wants to open a door between worlds," Marcus said, his voice dropping to a whisper. "He needs Elias's power to do it. If he succeeds, shadow creatures will come into our world. Nothing will survive."
Frightened whispers spread through the pack. Seraphina pushed through the crowd to hug her brother.
"Are you alright?" she asked Elias softly.
"I'm fine," Elias told her. "But Marcus told us something else. Something about Dad."
Seraphina went still. "What about him?"
"Darius has him," Elias said. "He's alive, Sera."
Seraphina's face paled. "That's not possible. I saw him die."
"It's true," Marcus maintained. "I saw him with my own eyes. Darius has kept him prisoner all these years."
The pack exploded in shocked conversations. Elder Maya called for silence again.
"If what Marcus says is true," she said seriously, "then we have no choice. We must help Kael and Elias reach the temple before Darius can finish his ritual."
The gray-streaked wolf shook his head furiously. "This could be a trick! Why trust this stranger?"
"Because I vouch for him," Kael said strongly. "Marcus was my friend before all this happened."
As the fight continued, Luna noticed something strange. Marcus was watching Elias closely, his eyes moving to the silver locket around Elias's neck. When no one was looking, Marcus's eyes briefly flashed black.
Luna tugged on Thorn's sleeve. "Something's wrong with Marcus," she whispered. "His eyes changed color."
Thorn frowned and looked at Marcus more carefully. "Stay here," he told Luna, moving toward Kael to warn him.
But before he could reach him, a howl sounded from the forest edge. Everyone turned to see a wolf running into camp, bleeding from deep claw marks on his side.
"Attack!" he gasped before falling. "Shadow wolves at the north border!"
Chaos occurred. Warriors ran for weapons while others helped the injured wolf. In the chaos, no one noticed Marcus slipping away from Kael's side, moving slowly toward Elias.
No one except Luna. She took a deep breath and ran after him, determined to warn Elias about Marcus's strange black eyes.
As howls and screams filled the air, Marcus reached out toward the silver ring hanging around Elias's neck. His fingers were inches away when Luna shouted: "Elias! Behind you!"
Elias spun around. Marcus's eyes turned totally black as his hand closed around the locket. A blast of dark energy burst from his fingers, knocking everyone nearby to the ground.
"Darius sends his regards," Marcus said in a voice that wasn't his own. Then he disappeared in a swirl of darkness, taking the locket with him.
Where Marcus had stood, a small scroll fell to the ground. Kael picked it up with shaking hands and read the message aloud: "Bring the Omega to the Forbidden Territory alone, or watch your father die, Elias Nightshade. You have until moonrise."
