Chapter 9: Darius's Plan

Darius stood on a steep cliff, watching the forest below. His red eyes glowed in the darkness. He was not Darius anymore—not really. The Void Walker inside him had taken over more and more each day.

"They escaped again," he growled. The shadow animals around him hissed and moved like smoke.

Deep in the forest, he could sense Elias's power. It shone like a bright star, calling to him. Next to it was Kael's power, bright and strong. Together, they made a light so bright it hurt Darius's eyes.

"I need that power," Darius whispered. His hand touched the old book hidden inside his coat. The book was old and bound in black leather with strange symbols on the cover. Inside were secrets that had been hidden for thousands of years.

Darius smiled as he remembered how he had found the book. Three hundred years ago, he had been a normal wolf, an Alpha like any other. Then he had found the hidden cave behind the Crystal Falls. Inside was the book and the shadow that now lived inside him.

"The ritual must happen soon," he said to himself. "Before the second moon rises."

The dark creatures around him moved closer, hungry for his orders.

"Go to the temple," Darius ordered. "Prepare the altar. I will bring the Omega."

As the shadows raced away, Darius opened the old book. The leaves were yellow with age, but the words still glowed with dark magic. He read the routine again, making sure he understood every step.

"First, the blood of an Alpha with Omega blood," he read. "Second, the power of an Omega who commands all elements. Third, the light of the second moon." He closed the book with a snap. "And then the door will open."

Darius had waited ages for this moment. He had watched for generations, looking for an Omega with Elias's power. None had been born—until now.

A twig snapped behind him. Darius turned quickly, ready to attack. But it was only one of his shadow dogs returning.

"What news?" Darius asked.

The ghost wolf bowed low. "The sister fights well. She has killed three of our kind."

Darius frowned. Seraphina was stronger than he had thought. "And the woman? The one who looks like their mother?"

"She moves toward the stream, as you ordered."

Darius smiled. His plan was working. The fake mother he had made from shadow and magic would lead Elias and Kael right into his trap.

"What about the goddess?" Darius asked. "Where is Aelara?"

The ghost wolf looked nervous. "She hides. Her power grows weaker."

This was good news. Aelara had been a problem for too long. Her power was the only thing that could stop him from opening the door to the Void.

Darius walked to the edge of the cliff and looked down at the darkening trees. More trees were dying as his power spread. Soon, the whole forest would be a place of shades, perfect for his kind.

"I must separate them," Darius said. "The Alpha and the Omega. Together, their bond is too strong."

He thought about the forecast. "When shadow and light unite in love's embrace, ancient chains shall shatter time and space." The words had haunted him for ages. If Kael and Elias finished their bond at the temple, all his plans would fail.

Suddenly, Darius felt a sharp pain in his chest. He gasped and fell to his knees. The Void Walker inside him was getting stronger, taking over more of his body. Soon, there would be nothing left of the wolf he once was.

"Not yet," Darius growled, fighting against the pain. "Not until I have the Omega's power."

As the pain faded, Darius stood up again. He had to move quickly now. The second moon would rise tomorrow night, and everything had to be ready.

He closed his eyes and sent his mind searching through the trees. He could feel Elias and Kael moving north, following the stream. They were getting closer to the fake mother. But he could also feel something else—a power he had not expected.

The locket. Seraphina had given Elias their mother's ring.

Darius cursed. The locket was dangerous. It held a piece of Aelara's power, enough to protect Elias from his shadow magic. He needed to get it away from him.

"Change of plans," Darius said to the shadow wolf. "Bring me the pack traitor."

The ghost wolf disappeared into the darkness. A few minutes later, it returned with a tall wolf with brown hair and scared eyes.

"Marcus," Darius said, smiling coldly. "How nice to see you again."

Marcus bowed, his body shaking with fear. "Master Darius. How can I serve you?"

"You were once Kael's friend, were you not?" Darius asked.

Marcus nodded. "Yes, before he revealed his true nature."

"Good." Darius put his hand on Marcus's shoulder. "I have a job for you."

As Darius described his plan, dark magic flowed from his fingers into Marcus's body. The wolf's eyes turned black, then back to normal. He was now under Darius's power.

"Go to them," Darius ordered. "Tell them you escaped from me. Warn them about the fake mother. Make them trust you."

"And then?" Marcus asked, his voice now flat and empty.

"And then, when they sleep, you will take the locket from Elias and bring it to me." Darius's eyes glowed brighter. "Do not fail me."

Marcus bowed again and ran off into the forest. Darius watched him go, feeling pleased with himself. Marcus would lead them straight into his trap.

With that done, Darius turned to his next job. He needed to prepare the ritual spot at the temple. The old stones needed to be painted with special symbols, and the altar needed to be ready for Elias.

As Darius made his way down the cliff, he thought about what would happen when he finally had Elias's power. He would be able to open the door to the Void, letting in the dark forces that had been locked away for thousands of years. With those skills, he would be the strongest wolf that had ever lived. All packs would bow to him.

But first, he had to deal with Kael. The Alpha with Omega blood was the only one who could stop him now.

Darius reached the bottom of the cliff and stepped into the shade of a dying tree. His body began to change, turning into a cloud of dark smoke. As a shadow, he could move much faster.

"Soon," he whispered as he moved through the trees. "Very soon."

Miles away, in a small cave by the stream, Elias woke with a start. He had been thinking of Darius, of red eyes watching him from the darkness.

"What's wrong?" Kael asked, sitting up beside him.

Before Elias could answer, they heard footsteps outside the cave. They both jumped up, ready to fight.

A figure appeared at the entrance—a wolf they both recognized.

"Marcus?" Kael said in surprise.

"I escaped," Marcus said, his face bloody and his clothes torn. "Darius is coming. And he's not alone." His eyes locked with Elias's. "He has your father."
