Chapter 51

Cassian had never seen anything like it.

The sky itself had split open, the battlefield trembling beneath the weight of something far beyond mortal understanding. Warriors—both allies and enemies—stood frozen, watching in horror as the rift vomited darkness into their world.

But Cassian had no time to watch.

He had already lost sight of Leon and Elara when they stepped into the Abyss. The moment Draven returned—changed, more powerful than before—he knew.

They were running out of time.

“Soren!” Cassian’s voice cut through the chaos as he wrenched his blade from the chest of a fallen enemy. Blood and shadow dripped from its edge. “Where the hell are our reinforcements?”

Soren, standing a few feet away with a gash across his temple, wiped the blood from his brow. “Dead or running.” He grimaced. “Mostly dead.”

Cassian clenched his jaw.

Draven had turned the battlefield against them. The moment his power unleashed itself, the very land had begun to collapse—cracks of Abyss-born darkness swallowing warriors whole.

“We can’t hold much longer,” Soren said, shifting his grip on his twin daggers. “Whatever they’re doing in there, they need to hurry the hell up.”

Cassian’s gut twisted.

He wasn’t sure there would be anything left for them to return to.

\---

The Collapse of the Frontline

A scream cut through the night.

Cassian turned just in time to see one of their commanders—Elden, a man who had fought beside him for years—yanked into the ground by tendrils of living darkness.

“No—” Cassian lunged, but it was too late.

Elden’s face twisted in a silent scream as the Abyss devoured him whole, leaving nothing behind.

Cassian staggered back, his heart pounding.

“Cassian!” Soren’s voice was sharp. “MOVE!”

Cassian barely had time to register the incoming wave of shadows before a pair of hands shoved him aside. He hit the ground hard, rolling into a crouch just in time to see another warrior—Reyna—engulfed in the same darkness.

She had saved him.

And now she was gone.

Cassian’s breath came fast, his vision blurring with rage. The battlefield was turning into a graveyard. Warriors weren’t just dying—they were being consumed.

“This is falling apart,” Soren snarled, flipping a dagger between his fingers as he surveyed what was left of their forces. “At this rate, we’ll all be dead before Leon and Elara even make it back.”

Cassian exhaled sharply, trying to think. They needed to regroup.

They needed a new plan.

Then—

A new presence swept over the battlefield.

And everything stopped.

\---

The Arrival of the Silver Guard

From the edge of the battlefield, horns blasted through the darkness.

Cassian’s head snapped up, his chest tightening in disbelief.

Riders.

Hundreds of them.

They tore across the horizon like a silver storm, their armor glistening in the moonlight, banners of the Silver Guard snapping in the wind. Their warhorses thundered over the broken ground, hooves churning the bloodied earth.

And at their front—

Arin.

Cassian’s stomach dropped.

Arin, the Captain of the Silver Guard—once a trusted ally, once a brother—rode at the helm, his piercing steel-gray eyes locked onto the battlefield. He held his sword high, and with a single, sharp motion—

He pointed it directly at Cassian.

Cassian’s blood ran cold.

This wasn’t a rescue.

It was a reckoning.

Soren swore under his breath. “Well. Shit.”

\---

The Betrayal Runs Deep

The Silver Guard had once been the strongest force in the kingdom—unbreakable, unstoppable, loyal only to the throne.

But that had changed the day Draven fell.

Cassian knew Arin.

Knew the loyalty that burned in his veins, the unyielding sense of duty that had once made him the best of them all.

And yet, here he was.

Riding with an army straight into their throats.

Cassian’s grip on his sword tightened. “Arin.”

The Silver Guard halted in perfect unison, their warhorses stamping against the cracked earth. The battlefield fell silent, as if the world itself had been waiting for this moment.

Then—

Arin dismounted.

He moved with the same cold efficiency Cassian remembered, his silver armor pristine, untouched by the chaos of battle.

He stopped a few feet away. Too close.

Cassian stared him down. “I should’ve known you’d pick the losing side.”

Arin’s face remained impassive. “That’s funny. I was about to say the same thing.”

Soren scoffed, rolling his shoulders. “You always were a dramatic bastard.”

Arin ignored him. His gaze stayed locked on Cassian. “You don’t have to die here.”

Cassian’s jaw clenched. “Neither do you.”

Arin tilted his head, a shadow of something unreadable flickering across his expression. “You think this is a choice?”

Cassian exhaled slowly. “Everything is a choice.”

Arin sighed. “Then you’ve made the wrong one.”

And without another word—

He drew his sword.

\---

The Breaking of Brotherhood

Cassian barely had time to react before Arin lunged.

Their swords clashed, the force of the impact sending a shockwave through the ground beneath them. The Silver Guard didn’t move—didn’t intervene.

This was personal.

Cassian gritted his teeth as he parried another strike, forcing Arin back. The bastard was faster than he remembered. More precise.

But Cassian had changed too.

He twisted, using the weight of his opponent’s momentum to slam the hilt of his sword into Arin’s ribs. Arin barely flinched, countering with brutal efficiency.

Steel met steel.

Blood hit the ground.

They had trained together.

They had bled together.

And now, they would break together.

\---

The Storm Unleashed

Thunder rumbled overhead.

Cassian knew what was coming.

Arin was holding back.

And when he finally let go—

Lightning erupted from his blade.

Cassian had seconds to react before the world exploded in white-hot energy. He barely managed to raise his sword in time, the force of the magic slamming into him like a hurricane.

Pain lanced through his body, sending him skidding across the battlefield.

Soren was at his side instantly. “Cassian—”

Cassian coughed, pushing himself up, his muscles screaming in protest. He glanced up—

And saw Arin standing over him.

Sword raised.

Magic crackling in his grip.

And just as he swung—

A deafening horn blast shattered the air.

Cassian’s breath hitched.

Because that sound—

That was Elara’s banner.

They were back.

And everything was about to change.
