Chapter 36 Chapter 36: How Will Things Go?

Chapter 36 Chapter 36: How Will Things Go?
Klay Talcon's POV:

"Well then... that settles it," I said, holding my phone out in front of me, trying to keep my excitement under control. "She agrees to meet me."

"Now tell her why you want to meet her for," my Beta, Keegan, said right then. "Tell her before she asks you. That way, she won't feel like you're trying to string her along."

"Alright, I get it," I said, sitting back in my chair at that moment.

However, just as I was looking at the phone, Leila sent me a text with a question that read to myself: 'What is it that you want to meet about? Granted, last night at dinner, which you weren't even invited to. You just couldn't help it when you made me feel like a total and utter fool. Especially in front of everyone at the restaurant.'

"What did she say?" My Beta asked me right then.

"Hang on a moment," I said, re-reading her text as I looked down at my phone, which I held lightly in my hands. I was going over my thoughts and trying to figure out what to say. "She said I made her feel like a fool at dinner." I took a brief pause when I spoke quickly, adding, "Here, I will tell her this instead."

I started to type on my phone as I read what I was typing out so that Keegan could hear me.

'What's taking him so long to reply?' I read Leila's thoughts as I continued to type.

"First off... She's getting impatient," I said, looking up at Keegan for a brief moment before I looked down again. I continued typing as I read the message aloud: 'I came across a new way to try to break the mate bond. I need to test it, but I can't do it unless you are there. That's why I asked you to meet me.'

I sent the text. It was like I was holding my breath till I got a reply back from her.

For what seemed like minutes, when in fact it had only been around 30 seconds or so, I was shocked that I didn't get an immediate reply from her. Not even her own thoughts came through as I was starting to get concerned. I wanted to know what she thought of my text.

"What's happening?" Keegan asked me as he was just as anxious as I seemed to be in this moment. "Has she sent anything yet?"

'Well, that's a bit unexpected.' Leila's thoughts came through. But this time, I didn't know what she could be referring to.

That's when we both heard a chime on my phone, but just as I looked down at the screen, I noticed that it wasn't Leila's name, which appeared at the top of my screen. I couldn't help it as my eyes narrowed as I slowly looked up at Keegan.

"What?!" He asked me with concern. "Who sent a text if not Leila?"

I parted my lips to speak, but no words came out as I wasn't sure what he could want. I was in the middle of something, and yet, he thought he would try to weasel his way into causing more trouble. Not today, I thought to myself as I looked away briefly.

I knew Keegan was getting a bit restless in his chair, as he was eager to know what was going on. That's when another chime rang out in the silence as my eyes quickly returned to look at the screen. This time it was Leila, and I looked at her message first.

"I will tell you about the other text after I read her text first," I said, touching my screen to open my phone.

I read her message aloud, which said: 'Fine, but when do you want to meet? I have other things I need to do for class. Then I have work on top of it.'

"Very well, I can get that," I said aloud in return as I began to type back. "This is what I am going to send her."

I sent her: 'We can meet mid-morning, tomorrow if you are up for that."

She sent an immediate response, as we were both thrilled when we heard the phone chime once again.

"Good, she didn't wait that long before she replied," I told Keegan as I opened up her text box again.

"What did she say then?" Keegan asked, his sudden impatience starting to show.

"She said this," I said as I read the message this time. 'I can meet you around 10, but where? I have to work at 11, so whatever you have to do, it will have to be done and concluded before I have to go to work. I don't need any more issues.'

'I can't believe this.' I read her thoughts again. I narrowed my eyes, which Keegan immediately picked up on, knowing something was off. 'What has gotten into him?'

"Him? Gotten into who?" I asked out loud as I frustratingly placed my phone, screen down, at an arm's length in front of me as I laid my arm down on the side of the chair.

"What?" Keegan asked me right then. "What are you talking about?"

I was silent for a moment. I inhaled deeply when I heard another chime on my phone. This time, I didn't bother to look at it.

"What happened?" Keegan asked again as I had yet to respond to him. "Alpha Klay, please tell me what happened. Do I need to check your phone?"

Keegan was just about to walk around when I spoke aloud.

"No, it's not that," I told him as he stopped in his current moment. That's when I sat up and placed my phone down on the top edge of my desk. "She said something. It was her thoughts. They rang through right after she sent me the text. I don't know who she is talking about."

"Well, then what did she say?" He persisted in his line of questioning.

I took in a heavy sigh when I let it out again as I interlocked my fingers.

"She said she can't believe this," I said at first.

"Believe what?" Keegan asked me insistently.

"It wasn't just that," I added. "She also asked herself a question, saying, 'What's gotten into him?' I don't know who she's referring to."

"Do you think she could have gotten a text from someone else?" Keegan asked me, to give me another possibility.

"You know what?" I asked as I leaned forward and turned my phone over, the screen still black. "I never thought of that."

"Well then, do you think that could be who she was referring to?" He asked me this time. "I mean, it's a possibility that more than one person could be texting her. Noting that, you did get another text, right?"

Suddenly, I reached forward and touched my screen. I opened the text log and pulled up the message now listed at the top.

"Alaric, what does he want?" Keegan asked me as I touched his name.

'You owe me big time,' Alaric's message read. 'I won't let this slide.'
