War in the Walls

War in the Walls
It was nearly two in the morning when the office door closed behind us.
Hope had gone upstairs to take off her makeup, a drink still in hand.
Alessandro had given us the signal. No words needed.

The plan. Now.

I dropped the files onto the low table.
Photos. Transcripts. A copy of the address taken off the messenger.
Lorenzo dropped into the armchair, arms crossed.
Alessandro stayed standing near the glass wall, cigarette between his fingers, his jaw locked tight like a man who wouldn’t let anything slip through again.

“She won’t move alone,” I said. “She’s smarter than that. She thinks she’s above us. We need to drag her down.”

“You wanna humiliate her?” Lorenzo muttered.

“I wanna trap her,” I corrected.

I laid down a photo.
A man at her side. Her lawyer. Her banker. Her shadow.

“He’ll be at Villa dell’Ombra on Monday. If we grab him, she loses a pawn. Maybe more.”

Alessandro took a long drag.
“We can’t take her yet. Not now.”
He exhaled.
“But we can surround her.”

He finally turned to us.
“Dario was a disease. Sofia… she’s a virus. Slower. Worse.”
He looked at me.
“You handle logistics. I want everything—what she funds, who she sees, what she eats, who she fucks.”

I nodded.

“And me?” Lorenzo asked.

Alessandro leaned in toward him.
“You stay with Hope. At the first crack, she’ll strike through it. And if she tries anything… you know what to do.”

Lorenzo nodded.
No more words needed.

Then Alessandro looked at us both.
“She thought she still knew me. Thought she could come back, pull strings, tear down what I love.”
He blew out smoke. Slow.
“She has no idea who I really am. The man who protects what’s his… even if he has to blow up everything to do it.”

The mirror reflected a woman who didn’t scare anymore.
I removed my earrings slowly.
My dress lay on the chair, replaced by a black tank top and lace panties. The red on my lips had faded—but not the anger.

That burned under my skin.

I ran a hand through my messy hair, breathing deep. Then I walked out of the bedroom without a sound.

My steps hit the floor loud and clear as I went down the stairs. The office light threw shadows across the walls.

When I entered, Alessandro, Lorenzo, and Matteo turned at once. Their voices died mid-sentence.

I locked eyes with Alessandro.

“I want this finished. Tomorrow.”

His brows furrowed as he straightened behind his desk.
“What are you talking about?”

I stepped forward, face sharp.
“Sofia. We end it tomorrow. I want her head, Alessandro.”

His jaw clenched, lips tight.
“No.”

The word cracked in the air.
Silence dropped—thick and dangerous.

I tilted my head, a blade of a smile on my mouth.
“No?”

He stood and came around the desk.
“We’re not moving now. She’ll destroy herself. I want her to collapse, bury herself. We wait.”

I let out a short, empty laugh.
“Wait? Wait for her to drag my name again? To humiliate us again?”

He came closer, eyes black with pressure.
“It’s my decision, Hope.”

“And I don’t give a damn about your decision.”
My voice was ice.
“I’m the one she’s stalking. The one she wants to erase. And you’re standing there hoping she’ll shoot herself in the foot?”

His fist curled.
“You don’t get it, damn it!”

“No, you don’t get it!”
My voice exploded, vibrating through the room.
“You’re still choosing to wait. To do nothing. To protect her.”

He grabbed my hips, eyes wild.
“Protect her?! Are you serious, Hope?!”

I stepped even closer, our faces inches apart.
“Yes, I’m serious. You’re protecting her because you don’t have the balls to finish what you started.”

He snapped.
“Shut up!”

“No.”

He seized my arm, hard, eyes locked on mine.
“You’re gonna listen to me.”

“Let go.”

“Hope—”

“Let. Me. Go.”

He released me, breath harsh, fists trembling.

I turned and walked out of the office. I could feel him behind me, his footsteps pounding the hallway.

I climbed the stairs without looking back, heart racing but my face stone-cold.

At the bedroom door, my hand on the handle, I knew he was right behind me.

“Hope, listen to me—”

I faced him, voice low and lethal.
“Get out.”

He opened his mouth, breath uneven.
“Hope—”

I slammed the door so hard the frame shook.

I stood with my back against it, breathing hard. On the other side, he hit the wood.

“Hope… open this fucking door!”

I closed my eyes.
“Walk away, Alessandro.”

Silence. Then his footsteps retreated.

I opened my eyes.

I didn’t cry. Never again.

Tomorrow, I’d decide.
Tomorrow, I’d take my life back.

With no one left to stop me.
