The Queen’s Move
The Queen’s Move
Camera flashes crackled.
Heads turned.
Whispers thickened with every step I took.
But I heard nothing.
I was aware of only one thing:
Alessandro.
His hand in mine.
And the power in my veins, ready to come down like a blade if she dared show up tonight.
My dress sliced the air with each stride.
Black as a promise, slit as a threat.
I had chosen every detail so no one would forget what I was.
Not a doll.
Not a target.
A woman. A weapon.
And when we entered, the hush was almost religious.
Alessandro looked devastating in a perfectly cut black suit, open collar, no tie, like a Sicilian god stepped out of a dream too dark.
But tonight, it was me they watched.
Even Matteo let out a low whistle.
Lorenzo nodded, a half-smile on his lips.
And then—
“She’s here,” Alessandro murmured.
I didn’t need him to point.
I felt her.
Sitting at a table in the back.
Sofia.
Her face frozen in fake neutrality.
Her blood-red dress too tight.
Her fingers clamped on a champagne glass.
She hadn’t expected this.
Not me.
Not this version of Hope Jones.
I smiled. Slowly.
Then sent her a single look.
Come. If you dare.
I turned to Alessandro, brushed a kiss on his cheek, then descended alone toward the buffet, Sofia’s eyes hooked to mine.
The game had begun.
I saw her approach in the reflection of my glass.
No rush. No panic.
She slid through the crowd like a shadow too sure of itself.
I didn’t turn right away.
I wanted her to come.
To make the first move.
To think she owned the dance.
“Hope Jones,” she said at last, her voice soft as a slow poison.
“Sofia Candelori,” I answered without turning, a smile at my lips. “They told me you liked to be wanted.”
I turned toward her. Slowly.
Our eyes met. The shock was silent… but explosive.
Two women. Two worlds.
One throne.
She was beautiful. A cold, classic, almost surgical beauty.
“You have very good taste,” she went on.
Her gaze slid over my dress.
I let her.
“You think? I wore it the first time Alessandro gave in. We didn’t really take it off. Not right away.”
A flicker crossed her eyes.
Hit.
But she didn’t fold.
“You two move fast. Love, drama, coma… and now marriage. Intense.”
“We live at the level we feel,” I said. “When it’s real, you don’t need to fake it.”
I stepped closer.
“That’s why it didn’t work with you, isn’t it?”
She laughed, but her eyes stayed cold.
“You’re sure of yourself. Makes you… almost touching.”
“And you’re on your comeback tour. Makes you almost pathetic.”
She stepped closer too.
Our breaths mingled.
“You think it’s over between us?”
“I know it is.”
I clicked my heels and turned.
“And I know one thing, Sofia…”
I leaned slightly toward her.
“If you come at me again… I won’t be this polite.”
I turned my back.
And felt her hate trail me like an overripe perfume.
I’d seen it.
Her.
Sofia.
Too close to Hope.
Matteo had lifted his eyes from his glass just long enough to tell me: it’s happening.
I left my guests without a word, my wine barely touched.
Crossed the hall like crossing a battlefield.
Hope had just turned on her heel. Sofia was watching her go like a wounded lioness.
I reached them without slowing, placing myself between Sofia and the silhouette of the woman I loved, turning to Sofia with surgical calm.
“You still don’t know how to bow, do you?”
Sofia straightened. Proud.
“You know I’m the only one who’s ever truly loved you, Alessandro.”
I smiled. Cold. Cutting.
“You never loved me. You wanted me. That’s very different.”
She opened her mouth, but I didn’t let her.
“You see that woman over there? The one you just tried to sting like a viper in a lioness’s heels?”
I leaned slightly, my tone a whisper of ice.
“She healed me from a world where you were queen.”
Sofia paled.
I went on, merciless.
“If you come back here, if you look at her, if you even think about her with that pathetic hunger…”
I straightened.
“…I won’t destroy you.”
“No?” she hissed.
“No, Sofia. I’ll let you destroy yourself. It’s slower. Crueler. You love that, don’t you?”
I stepped back.
“Enjoy your last gala in my house.”
And I walked away.
I rejoined Hope.
She was waiting, back straight, eyes of fire, glass in hand.
I slid my fingers over hers.
“I saw you. The whole scene. You were sublime.”
She looked at me.
“She doesn’t know yet… that I’ve already won.”
I smiled.
“She’ll know tonight.”
And I kissed her.
Right there. In front of everyone.
So Sofia would see.
So she would know.
