Chapter 18
Chapter 18
Brianna's point of view.
I entered the house and felt a churn of really odd feelings. My father had been acting strange lately, but I couldn't shake the feeling that something was being hidden from me.
To the left of me, in the middle of the living room, sat my father, fingers pressed against his temple, stuttering nervously. I knew that specific look; it only signified one thing-his head was caught up in trouble.
"Dad, what's going on?" I asked, trying to introduce a little calmness in my voice.
He looked up at me with the look of fear mixed with desperation in his eyes. "Brianna I can explain," he said, stammering through the words.
But I did not let him finish. I had already spotted the papers lying on the coffee table with names of different people like Don Jack written on them. Though I was aware that my father was supposed to be in debt to Don Jack, I had no idea what he had planned to pay it back.
But then I noticed that, looking at the papers, something was not right. The numbers were strange, and the dates all seemed to be wrong. It was like he fabricated it all.
"Dad, you're lying to me," I said, voice firm. "You don't owe any money to Don Jack, do you?"
He looked at me, a mixture of guilt and shame on his face. "Brianna, I...I can explain," he stammered.
But I didn't let him finish. I was just too angry, too hurt. "You're planning something with Don Jack, aren't you?" I accused. "Something against the King family."
My father's eyes widened in surprise, and for a moment, I think I saw a glimmer of fear in his eyes at first . But then, his expression hardened, and he looked at me with a cold, calculating gaze.
"Brianna, you don't understand," he said, his voice low and menacing. "The King family has been a thorn in our side for too long. They think they're above the law, that they can just do whatever they want and get away with it. But we're going to show them that they're not above the law. We'll bring them down," he said, "no matter what it takes."
“ Why?, for cancelling the wedding?” I asked
“ Is that not enough reason?” He said
I listened in wonderment and a horrified chill ran down my spine as I heard my father's words. He was totally different, unlike the father I knew. Why was he so concerned about the cancellation of the wedding.
I couldn't tell Brenda, at least not yet
There was this cold, calculating glint in his eyes now. It was as if he had become a different person, a person who didn't mind the means to the ends.
I knew I had to get out of here, away from my father and his twisted schemes. I turned and ran, not stopping until I was safe and outside, gasping for air.
Back at the house, it was clear to me that there was something I needed to do about my father and Don Jack. I could not, by any means, sit still and let them destroy the King's family. It had to be action taken.
I shadowed my father, George Conners, from a distance as I tried not to be seen. I spent half a day trying to find out what he was planning about the King family.
My father met between some of these lowlifes who, more or less, are playing a part in these plans. I so much tried eavesdropping on them, but always they were either too far or suddenly stopped talking for some reasons as I got near.
I was getting tired. I had been trying to find out what my father was planning for weeks, leading me nowhere.
Darkness or nearly dark, then finally Dad led me to a bland little warehouse pretty far into the outskirts of town. I watched as he entered and then casually followed in behind trying to stay hidden.
I then came to find an enormous maze of crates and boxes along with a really gruff voice belonging to my father echoing somewhere within.
When I saw him turn, I could see him with one of the mob lords, Don Jack. They were speaking in a low voice, and I could make out only that it was something really big. I tried moving closer, but it seemed they were too far away for me to have a clear ear on them.
Eventually, I thought I heard father mention the King family, and at this point, my heart really skipped because I understood that he was hatching plans against them.
What, though? I strained my ears to listen in more, but they were done with their talk and were just walking away-my daddy and Don Jack-and disappearing into the depth of the warehouse.
And I was left standing there, frustrated and helpless. I was so close to finding out what my father was planning, but it slipped right through my fingers.
I exited the warehouse carrying that frustration in my chest with a resolve to know what exactly my father was planning notwithstanding what it might take to know. I was going to stop him before he could harm the King family.
With a swift pull of my phone out of my pocket, I dialed Logan’s number. I wasn't sure about it. I knew Logan couldn't be trusted either. However, I thought he could have a solution to it.
And there I was, waiting for Logan to answer, but that familiar hope crept in because perhaps I would manage to stop my father before it was too late.
I thought over it again and decided I was going to tell Logan . I will investigate this myself
