Chapter 17
Chapter 17
Logan's point of view
I was occupied in my car, which was stationed across the road in front of the office building of George Conners. My efforts were focused in gathering investigatory intelligence from these offices on George in his involvement with Don Jack, and I had not been successful so far.
I decided to try a different approach. Instead of trying to dig up information, I would try to trail George Conners and see where he went. Maybe I could catch him meeting with Don Jack or someone else involved in their plans.
Hours dragged on, long minutes spent in the office building watching people coming and going. Finally, George Conners came out, looking around as if he was trying to shake off someone before getting into his car.
I turned on my engine and got into motion trailing him, ensuring I remained far enough behind. We drove through the city, George Conners leading me on a wild goose chase through the streets.
Eventually, we got to an unmarked warehouse just outside of town. George Conners stepped out of his vehicle and surveyed the area with an expression before giving a nod to someone within the warehouse.
I drew to a stop and watched as George Conners entered. I could not see who he was meeting, but I'm sure the person was very important, and I was determined to find out.
I thought I should try and get closer. I crawled out of my car and walked around the warehouse, looking for a good spot where I could either peek inside through a window or door.
I crawled around the building, finally stumbling upon a vent that was barely open. In went my fingers, and I was able to hoist myself up and into the cramped, dusty spaces.
I crawled through the vents toward anywhere close to where I believed important conversations were taking place. As I crawled along the ductwork, I could hear voices below me and could make out very faint snippets of what they were saying.
I finally made it to a vent that provided a view toward the warehouse floor. Peering through the slits, I looked in search of catching a glimpse of who George Conners was meeting with.
I saw George Conners in front of an assembly of men who looked more like thugs than anything. They all wore jackets made of leather, and they looked as if they were out of touch with water for weeks on end.
The man who drew my attention more than the fact that it was George Conners next to him was the fact that it was none other than Don Jack himself, a sly, slightly grinning man, as he listened to George Conners.
Now I felt a lot of anger and even more frustration built up. What were George Conners together with Don Jack planning? How could I do such an act to stop them?
I pried on, watching how much I could learn from that point. All the same, as I looked down to the mean-looking guys below me, I could not shake the feeling that I was putting myself in deep waters here.
I knew what I was doing would embrace fire; but I was determined to do it, however.
I crawled out from behind the vent pipe, disappointment and sadness catching my breath in a little rush. I was hoping to find something substantial on George Conners and Don Jack's plans, but I was coming up empty.
Palmed back to my car feeling beaten. I had been so sure that I would find something, but now I started suspecting I might as well be chasing a wild goose.
On my way back to my office, it seemed disappointing. I was so confident that I was on the trail for the evidence proving this is real, but now it seemed like maybe I was wasting time.
Entered the office with a lot of disappointment and frustration. I sank into my desk and started going through all the things I could do. But I drew a blank.
There was something I couldn't just give up; I would have to keep at it no matter how bad it seemed. But I felt I was nearing the end with lots of options running out.
I was really overwhelmed and discontent while I was sitting in my chair at the desk and was occupied with thoughts of Brianna. All my efforts had gone in vain to draw her close so that I might know if she knew much about her father's future works, but till now, I could not find much.
I was thinking about trying a different way. Instead of chasing George Conners, I could get closer to Brianna; she might know more than she's letting on.
I grabbed my phone, feeling the call to action. There was no backing away from the truth now, no matter what it takes.
To Brianna's phone number, I dialed it by holding my breath in anticipation. It might just be the break I needed, the reason having Brianna help me put together the basics of the case to find out if her father had really committed the crime or not.
Waiting for her response, I filled with a sense of imagined triumph, because maybe this time something could change into the bigger thing and maybe finally I would catch hold of the real truth and bring George Conners and Don Jack to justice.
But in my mind, I wasn't really sure if this could bring up any good to me as I waited for Brianna to answer, for I felt I was already taking a risk. But I really would do anything to let me see it through.
