Chapter 49
Dan wiped his mouth. He could still taste breakfast. Smiling and taking a deep breath, he made sure no evidence of the morning meal was apparent on his clothing.
He thought he heard Bill’s voice and that of another man through the door. Dan listened. However, he couldn’t quite understand what was being said. He hoped it didn’t look suspicious if whoever it was had seen Bill coming out of his office. Cautiously he opened his door and went out to pick up his schedule. As he closed and locked his door, Marty, the young vet tech from small animal came out of the men’s room across from Dan’s office. He looked like he was upset.
“Marty?”
The young man stopped.
“You okay?”
“Yeah…yeah I’m fine,” he said in a small voice and walked in the direction of the kennels where the dogs and cats which were being treated or recovering from surgery were housed.
Dan watched him go, shrugged, turned, and went to the office to pick up his list of calls from Rose.
* * * *
“Any plans for tonight?” Rose asked when Dan checked in at the office at the end of the day to give her a run-down of services he’d performed so she could bill his clients.
He hesitated, then decided if anything were to come of his relationship with Bill, they probably wouldn’t be able to hide it from the staff. “Dr. Henley and I are having dinner together.”
“How nice. It’s good that you’re getting out. And it’s good for you two bachelors to support each other. Where are you going to eat?”
Dan figured he should ease into the reality slowly and not divulge that Bill was making dinner at his apartment—that might raise a few eyebrows. “I’m not sure where we’ll be going,” he lied. “Maybe drive into the city.”
“They have a new menu at Alice and Murray’s—getting on to fall and lots of local farm produce to use for Alice’s wonderful concoctions,” Rose suggested.
Dan had eaten at Alice and Murray’s a few times. He was sure Alice’s concoctions were responsible for at least five of the extra pounds he’d gained since Christine had left.
Dan thanked Rose for the tip and said good night. He went home and took care of the dogs, apologizing to them for being gone for the evening—again. Then he took a shower.
Dan found Bill’s apartment easily. It was in another of the new developments in Taylor that was slowly but steadily transforming the small farm town into a suburb. Bill had told Dan he’d decided to rent for a while and not rush into buying a house until he was settled and knew what he was looking for.
Perfect, Dan had thought at the time. It’ll be easier if one of us doesn’t have to sell when we move in toget…
Stop! he told himself. There you go, getting ahead of yourself and letting wishful thinking turn into reality.
Dan pushed the button for Bill’s apartment.
“Sorry, I made my donation at the office this morning,” came Bill’s voice on the intercom.
“What?” Dan said, then figured out what Bill meant and added, “I just came to give you your receipt for your generous contribution.”
“In that case, come on in,” Bill said with an evil snigger.
The buzzer sounded and Dan made his way up to Bill’s apartment.
Bill’s door was open. Dan walked in, and it closed behind him as Bill stepped out from behind it. He was naked. Bill pulled Dan into a tight embrace. He began to fondle Dan’s ass as he kissed him.
Dan kissed back and experienced a rush of excitement as he felt his cock harden and Bill’s already erect dick press against his abs.
Bill broke the kiss but didn’t break the contact between their bodies. “Now here’s the question. Do you want to fill your stomach with my exquisite, authentic Chinese chop suey? Or would you rather I fill your beautiful furry ass with my superb, authentic English cock, only two generations removed from its ancestral home in Warwickshire, birthplace of William Shakespeare?” He punctuated the enquiry with a slow rhythmic humping action.
Dan laughed, but before he could answer felt something rub against his leg accompanied by a low growl-like purr. He looked down and saw one of the biggest cats he’d ever seen. He recognized the tawny beast as a Maine Coon, the largest of the domestic cats.
Bill laughed as he reached down, lifted the cat, and held it upside down in his arms. The animal didn’t protest, but lay quietly and continued to purr as it looked straight into Dan’s eyes.
“That’s right, Ari, give him the evil eye. Let him know who’s boss here.”
“Ari thinks cuz he looks like a lion he’s king of the castle, but he’s really an old softy. Go ahead, scratch his tummy.”
Ari did look like a miniature lion with his tawny coat and ruff of long hair around his head. Dan gave him a rub on his tummy. Ari’s purr became louder. The cat grabbed Dan’s hand with retracted claws and gave him a gentle love nip.
