Chapter Eighty-Seven

Mirah
I stood beside my bed, allowing the feeling of nostalgia wash over me. Did I miss this place? Yes.
My parents too. More like the people they were before, and not the people they'd become.
I heard voices outside the door, and sought a place to hide. The last thing I wanted was to face them head-on, while they were looking for me.
The door pushed open just as I hid behind a curtain. Footsteps got closer to where I was. I resisted peeping to see who it was, for fear that they might catch me.
My breath caught in my throat as the footsteps advanced.
One.
Two.
And...
My heartbeat accelerated as my gaze landed on Kathryn. Her eyes widened.
“Kathryn, it's not what you think,” I parted my lips to say, when she suddenly let the curtain down.
“That's odd, I thought I heard something.” I heard her mutter which made me blink once.
Then twice.
She didn't see me. She couldn't see me.
Natasha didn't mention that being invisible came with this thing. But I wasn't complaining. I cracked my neck, ready to explore my newfound powers. I waited until I heard Kathryn leave, even though I knew fully well that she wouldn't be able to see me.
Then I came out. I made to go out when I caught my reflection in the mirror. I gasped, and moved closer.
Wait-
This, this was odd. Beautifully odd.
I looked... different. I originally had blue-jade eyes. I still retained it, but I could spot a purple spark within my orbs. And my hair had few purple strands.
Resolving to ask the others about it when I got back, I moved away from the mirror and left the room.
This place was just as I remembered it. Big, and devoid of warmth.
Not warmth, like heat and fire. But the warmth from family love. The warmth which I'd forgotten how it felt.
My parents were in the large living room, talking in hushed voices. Kathryn was there too.
I walked over, standing behind a pillar, and listened in on their conversation.
“And what'd we tell his father? He's bent on giving another lady to his son, though his son doesn't agree.” My father said, his forehead creasing.
My eyes narrowed because I knew what they were talking about. Jayden's family.
And from the way he spoke, it seemed like Jayden's father wasn't patient enough to allow my parents to find me and give me out to his son.
Good.
“His son still likes our daughter. We still stand a chance.” My father continued, exhaling and sipping on his glass of wine.
The hatred I felt for them returned in a sharp swoop, making me grit my teeth.
I swallowed, as I felt my eyes burn. It turned out these people would never be repentant.
Deciding I'd explored and heard enough to ruin my day, I turned and made to leave. Suddenly I heard someone knock on the door.
I halted in my tracks. I was already here, I might as well see what my father was up to. I craned my neck to get a better vision of the door. I guessed that it was Jayden at the door.
I wouldn't put it past my father to invite him over, and talk things out.
And that might involve begging Jayden not to give in to his father's orders.
Only that it wasn't Jayden at the door. Nor was it anyone from the Damion's family either. No, this thing was different.
Yes, a thing. Not a person.
I watched as my father moved back into the room, his legs shaking visibly as he called on the guards.
“Who are you?” He asked.
The ‘thing’ which had an oddly pretty face like an angel, and four legs like a Centaur advanced into my room.
In spite of myself, I shuddered when the thing glanced in my direction. Its eyes lingered for a while.
Like it could actually see me.
Its lips curled. “I'm here to negotiate.” It said, and my body jolted.
I felt like it was actually talking to me, and not my parents.
“Guards!” My father yelled, his arrogant attitude returning. “I'm not easily scared, you should know that. And if you think dressing up as a scary character would prompt me to give you all my money, you better think twice.” My father snapped, his hand going into his pocket and pulling out a gun.
Of course. My father had a gun.
And I was just finding out.
I didn't share my father's thoughts. Sometime ago, I might have. But not after witnessing the supernatural world. And actually wielding some powers. The thing stretching out its hand. My father struggled, coughing as he rose into the air.
“Mere humans shouldn't interfere with the issues of the Dark realm.” Its eyes collided with mine, and I felt a chill run down my spine.
I wanted to dash forward and free my father, before it'd kill him. But my legs weren't cooperating. Thankfully, it threw my father to the ground, and I sighed in relief. I might hate him, but I definitely didn't wish for his death.
‘Mere humans shouldn't interfere with the issues of the Dark realm.’
A warning.
My nose flared, as I defiantly stared back at it.
But before I could do anything, everyone vanished. I stood, frozen at a spot trying to figure out what the hell just happened. The ‘thing’ had enveloped my parents in a white cloud of smoke, and vanished with them.
Shit.
My heart thudded against my chest, as I ran to a nearby wall and tried creating a portal again. Thankfully, it worked. I didn't have time to gloat over my small success, as I stepped through the portal with only one thought in mind.
My parents were in danger.
...
Natasha was practicing archery when I got back. She looked happy to see me, as she hugged me. “Hey, I thought you lost your way in Vermont... Shit, what the fuck happened?” She looked at me.
My body felt numb, as I struggled to form a coherent sentence. “Where are the others?” I finally whispered as if in a daze. Immediately she responded, I dashed towards the palace.
