Chapter Sixty-Five

Zeke
I wasn't fazed, enjoying the feel of Mirah's softness beneath my fingers.
“You know, I've always wondered what a burning throne room would look like.” I hardened my voice. “Tell your guards to stand down, else the entire castle would go down with you.” I warned.
My father's nose flared. “Insolence!” But he gave a sign to the guards to back away.
I smiled coldly. “We aren't here to waste your time. We request a meeting with the Circle, with your attendance, and the hibernating vampires, excluding the attendance of the king-in-training and his mother.” I finally met Alex's gaze.
Unlike his usual self, he looked quite uncomfortable. And it showed in his posture.
My father frowned. “That's impossible.”
“I'm asking nicely, King Elliott. Which would you choose? Bloodshed, or a peaceful meeting? Though I'd prefer the former.” A cold smile tugged at my lips.
My father's eyes could've razed down a building at that moment. He briefly glanced at Qyle who hadn't spoken a word.
“Are you going to side him?”
Qyle chuckled. “I've always sided with him. Now, make your choice.”
My father heaved a sigh, and pressed a button on his ring. That action was an emergency call, requesting for an urgent meeting of the Circle.
I nodded. “Good choice.”
Mt Glacier was colder than usual, and I knew the Circle had purposefully done it so Mirah would freeze to death. Unfortunately for them, I came prepared.
“Put this on,” I handed an amulet to Mirah whose face was already turning red from the cold.
“Bloody fuckers,” I heard Natasha say. She was standing close to Qyle who was observing the surroundings.
“They've placed traps around.” He scoffed, and I took a closer look around. True enough, hidden at strategic places were vampires bane, sprinkled on the white ground. It wasn't noticeable, and blended well into the icy ground.
“Fuckers,” I said. If they thought some bluish substance was going to stop us from achieving our goals, they probably had no idea how powerful I was.
I'd never thought of standing up against the Circle. After the king, they were the most powerful in the kingdom. They maintained order, and ensured that their choice of king was the best. I'd been elated when I was chosen to join them. All along, I secretly groomed myself to become the king.
Once, my powers had erupted in my secret house. I'd prayed that the Circle wouldn't notice the disturbance of balance. But thinking about it now, I wondered if they'd known.
That Rogue-brid had mentioned that I was his biggest threat. I wondered what that meant.
“Can I- Can I hug you?” I heard Mirah whisper. Her beautiful eyes were widened, as she rubbed her hands together.
She wasn't cold anymore, 'cause the amulet was designed as a protective armor. She was afraid.
I spread out my arms, and she rushed into my embrace. For a moment, I was thankful that she'd forgotten about our quarrel.
Her body against mine was so soft. So soothing.
Natural. Mine.
I allowed myself the luxury of inhaling her scent, and I briefly closed my eyes.
I was about to say something, when the loud horn blared. My body tensed.
This was it. The moment of truth was about to begin.
“What's that?” Mirah asked me.
“It's a call to the vampires in hibernation.” I explained, even though I wasn't sure if she'd understand.
“Ohh,” she replied, and moved away.
I missed her touch almost immediately, but I didn't have time to dwell on it, as a loud voice called out to us.
“The intruders may come in!”
I let Natasha lead the way, to further provoke them. As we walked, a tensed part of me wanted to stop her, and ask her what the outcome of our meeting would be.
She was a See-brid after all, with the power to see into the future. She must have seen what'd happen today.
But seeing how excited she was, I presumed that all would go well.
Gloominess and eeriness blended in one, hung in the air, as we walked deeper into the large labyrinth-shaped hall.
“Is it me, or does the Circle thrive in putting fear into the powerless ones?” Natasha said out loud, knowing that the members were watching us from their end.
I chuckled in response.
We finally arrived at the door that led to the meeting hall. A cloaked member was already waiting for us.
“We have to scan you for unaccepted materials.” He said without emotion.
I stepped forward. “Back off, we know better than to bring harmful materials.” I said, my eyes glinting dangerously.
My aura poured off me, and then recalling that Mirah was close by, I toned it down.
But that brief action alone, ignited fear in the man, as I deduced from the way his body shook. He moved away, and granted us access.
This time, I led the way with Mirah and Natasha in the middle, and Qyle at the rear.
The meeting hall was empty to others; but I could see through the facade.
“We are here.” I said, for the benefit of the others.
Master Vignar shifted on his seat.
“The vampires who has gone into hibernation, can't stand this place. If you insist on the meeting, it has to be in the sacred place.” He said, without mincing words.
My facial features tightened. “Lead us there.”
I wasn't going to back down. Not now, that we were almost close to getting answers.
A brief look of surprise covered Master Vignar's face, but without further argument, he rose to his feet. The others members followed suit. I stood in place, watching as he punched in some numbers on an invisible keypad.
The wall parted with a rumble, revealing a dark path, lit up only by blue lights.
I allowed the members lead the way, before I turned to the others.
“Let's go.”
I'd never been to the sacred place, which was reserved for the heart of the Circle. The first time I heard about it, was from a discussion between my father and Master Ragnarok.
I'd been eavesdropping that day, and I thought I heard something like, “She's getting powerful. We can't protect her.”
And then, I'd unintentionally slipped, and the sound had attracted my father to the door. I could recall his ashen face, as he questioned me if I heard their discussion.
I replied in negative, and though I could tell that he didn't believe me, he didn't push further.
At the present, I ignored the chills which this place gave. It was almost as if we'd been transported to another world.
