The air between Luke and Ethan felt electric, charged with an unspoken tension. Sophia stood between them, her heart pounding in her chest, unsure what to do or say. Ethan's eyes, piercing and unyielding, locked onto her like a predator that had finally found its prey. Luke, standing just behind her, was a solid presence, his green eyes flicking between her and Ethan as though ready to defend her from something she didn't yet understand.
“Sophia,” Ethan said, his voice low and firm, “we need to talk.”
Her throat tightened. She wasn’t sure if she was ready for whatever this conversation would bring. The whole idea of a “mate” still felt foreign, too unreal for her to accept. But the pull toward Ethan, undeniable and terrifying, lingered at the edges of her awareness.
“I think she’s heard enough from you,” Luke interrupted, his voice cold. “You’ve caused enough confusion as it is.”
Ethan’s jaw clenched, his muscles rippling beneath his shirt as if he was holding himself back from something more primal. “This has nothing to do with you, Luke. Stay out of it.”
Sophia glanced between them, feeling like she was caught in the middle of a tug-of-war. The tension between the two men was palpable, and it made her uneasy. They clearly had a history, but what worried her more was the intensity behind both of their words—as if there was something much bigger at stake than just her.
“I’m not going to let you drag her into your world, Ethan,” Luke said, his voice simmering with anger. “She deserves to live her life without being tied to a pack, without being bound to you.”
Ethan’s eyes narrowed. “That’s not your decision to make. It’s hers.”
Sophia felt her stomach flip as both men turned their attention to her. She wasn’t ready for this—wasn’t ready to choose between two lives, two futures she barely understood. The weight of their gazes made it hard to breathe.
“I don’t…” she started, her voice faltering. “I don’t even know what’s happening. How can I make a decision when I don’t understand any of this?”
Luke stepped forward, placing a hand on her shoulder in a gesture that felt protective. “You don’t have to decide anything right now. You have time to figure this out—time to live your life without being forced into anything.”
Ethan’s expression softened just slightly, but his eyes remained intense. “I’m not forcing anything, Sophia. But you need to know the truth. You need to understand what we are—what you are to me.”
The weight of his words hit her like a tidal wave. What she was to him. It was overwhelming, terrifying, and yet… there was something deep inside her that stirred at the thought. A primal connection, a spark that had been growing ever since that night at the bar. But was it real? Or was it just some part of this mythical bond he spoke of?
“I don’t want to be bound to anyone,” she whispered, her voice trembling. “I don’t even know who I am yet.”
Ethan stepped closer, his presence filling the space around her. “I know it’s a lot, Sophia. I know you’re scared. But this bond… it’s real. And whether you want it or not, it’s there. You can feel it, can’t you?”
Sophia didn’t answer. She could feel it, but admitting that out loud felt like giving up control—like stepping into a world she wasn’t ready for.
Luke’s grip on her shoulder tightened. “You don’t have to listen to him, Sophia. You’re not bound to anyone. You have a choice.”
Ethan’s eyes flashed, his voice low but filled with conviction. “The choice is hers, Luke. And whatever she decides, I’ll respect it. But she deserves to know what she’s walking away from.”
Sophia’s heart raced as their words swirled around her. The choice was hers, but what choice did she really have? On one hand, there was her normal life—school, work, her struggling finances, and the overwhelming responsibility she had taken on since her mother’s death. On the other hand, there was this new world, filled with ancient laws, dangerous dynamics, and a bond she didn’t fully understand but could feel pulsing beneath her skin.
Finally, she pulled away from both men, taking a deep breath. “I need time,” she said softly, her voice barely above a whisper. “I need to figure this out for myself.”
Ethan looked at her for a long moment, his face unreadable. Then he nodded, stepping back. “Take all the time you need, Sophia. I’ll be waiting.”
Luke exhaled quietly behind her, his presence still tense but somewhat relieved. “You don’t have to rush into anything. Just focus on what’s in front of you right now.”
Sophia gave a small, grateful nod, though her mind was far from settled. She didn’t know how to focus on anything anymore. Everything had changed, and there was no going back to the life she’d known before.
Ethan turned and left the bar, his departure leaving an odd emptiness in the room. Luke stayed by her side, but even with him there, she couldn’t shake the feeling that something monumental had just shifted.
As the door closed behind Ethan, Sophia felt a strange pang of loss. Despite everything, despite how overwhelming it all was, part of her wanted to run after him—wanted to know more, to understand what this connection really meant.
But she couldn’t. Not yet.
Luke’s voice broke through her thoughts. “You’ll be okay,” he said, his tone softer now. “I’m here if you need me.”
Sophia managed a small smile. “Thanks, Luke.”
He gave her a brief nod before heading back to the office, leaving her alone behind the bar. As the noise of the customers and clinking glasses resumed around her, Sophia couldn’t shake the feeling that no matter what choice she made, her life was never going to be the same again.
One way or another, everything had changed.
