Chapter 13 - The Awakening

Sophia woke the next morning, the sunlight streaming through the thin curtains of her apartment. She lay still for a moment, staring up at the ceiling as the events of the night before came rushing back in vivid detail. Ethan, the conversation, the bond… everything felt surreal. She tried to shake it off, but her mind clung to the intensity of his words, the weight of their meaning pressing on her chest.

Her phone buzzed on the nightstand, snapping her out of her thoughts. A text from Luke. Her heart sank a little, and she quickly grabbed the phone.

Luke: *You’re on shift today. Don’t be late*.

She sighed and rolled out of bed. As much as her thoughts were consumed with Ethan, she still had a life—work, school, responsibilities. She couldn’t let herself get lost in this whirlwind of emotions. She had no idea what was happening to her, and she needed to stay grounded.

After a quick shower, she dressed in her work clothes and threw her hair up into a messy bun. She glanced in the mirror, her reflection staring back at her. Despite everything, she looked the same. But she didn’t feel the same. Something was changing inside her, something she couldn’t yet put into words.

Sophia grabbed her keys and headed out the door, determined to get through the day without letting her mind wander too much.

The bar was buzzing with activity when she arrived, and Luke was already there, wiping down tables with a tense look on his face. He didn’t acknowledge her when she walked in, but she could feel the weight of his mood from across the room. He was upset, but not with her. No, his frustration was aimed at someone else entirely.

She couldn’t help but think of the conversation between Luke and Ethan the night before. Pack law. The mating pull. What was that all about? It was clear they had history—bad history. And now, somehow, she was in the middle of it.

Sophia went straight to work, picking up where the other servers had left off. As she moved behind the bar to take some orders, her eyes flicked over to Luke, who was now standing near the office door, his gaze fixed on her. There was something different about the way he was looking at her, something she hadn’t noticed before. Like he was holding back. Like he knew something.

She tried to focus on the customers, on the noise, the clinking of glasses, the low hum of conversation. But she could still feel Luke’s eyes on her.

Finally, she couldn’t take it anymore. She walked over to him, keeping her voice low. “Luke, what’s going on?”

He crossed his arms, his jaw tightening. “What do you mean?”

“You and Ethan,” she said quietly, glancing around to make sure no one was listening. “I overheard your conversation last night. What are you hiding from me?”

Luke’s eyes darkened, and for a moment, she thought he might brush her off. But instead, he sighed, leaning back against the wall. “You don’t know what you’ve gotten yourself into, Sophia.”

“I don’t know anything because no one’s telling me the truth,” she snapped, frustration bubbling up inside her. “I’m tired of being in the dark. If there’s something I need to know, you need to tell me.”

Luke rubbed his temples, clearly torn. Finally, he looked at her, his voice low and strained. “Ethan’s part of a pack. A werewolf pack.”

Sophia blinked, her mind spinning. Even though Ethan had already told her this, hearing it from someone else made it feel more real, more impossible to ignore. “So… it’s true?”

“Yeah, it’s true,” Luke muttered, glancing away as if the very idea irritated him. “And now he thinks you’re his mate.”

Sophia’s breath caught in her throat. “Why does everyone keep saying that?”

“Because it’s the truth,” Luke said, his voice hardening. “Werewolves have mates. It’s something primal, something you can’t fight. Once they’ve found their mate, that’s it. They’re bonded for life. And Ethan thinks you’re his.”

Her stomach dropped. This wasn’t just some fantasy. This was real. And now she was part of it, whether she wanted to be or not.

“But I don’t… I don’t feel bonded to him,” Sophia whispered, her voice shaking.

Luke’s green eyes softened for a moment, but only for a second. “It doesn’t happen right away. It takes time. But the bond is there, Sophia. You’ve felt it, haven’t you?”

She didn’t answer, but the truth was, she had felt it. That strange pull, that unexplainable connection to Ethan—it was real, and it scared her more than anything.

Luke sighed, straightening up. “Listen, I’ve known Ethan a long time. He’s not a bad guy, but this… this thing between you two—it’s dangerous.”

“Dangerous?” Sophia’s voice trembled. “Why?”

Luke’s gaze hardened. “Because once the bond starts to take hold, it’s almost impossible to break. You won’t be able to walk away from him, no matter how much you want to.”

Sophia felt like the world was spinning out of control. This was too much. She didn’t ask for this. She didn’t want any of this.

“Why are you telling me this?” she asked, her voice small.

Luke hesitated for a moment before answering. “Because you deserve to know the truth. And because I… I don’t want to see you hurt.”

Sophia’s heart skipped a beat. There was something in his tone, something that made her feel like he wasn’t just concerned about her well-being—like he had feelings for her, feelings he was trying to suppress.

Before she could respond, the door to the bar swung open, and in walked Ethan. His presence filled the room, as if the very air shifted around him. He locked eyes with her instantly, his expression unreadable but intense.

Luke stiffened beside her, his posture instantly defensive. “Here we go,” he muttered under his breath.

Sophia’s stomach churned as Ethan walked toward them, his gaze never leaving hers. She felt trapped, caught between these two men who clearly had a long, complicated history—and who both seemed to have some kind of claim on her.

As Ethan stopped in front of them, the tension was thick enough to cut with a knife. Sophia swallowed hard, her mind racing. She had no idea what was coming next, but one thing was clear: nothing would ever be the same again.
