Chapter 84 Chapter Eighty-Four

Chapter 84 Chapter Eighty-Four

Kaelan

“So… found anything yet?” I took a casual sip from my half filled glass of whiskey.

Ryan shook his head while I sighed in disbelief. “How the fuck is this person hiding themselves well?”

“Perfectly–” He shut up when I sent a glare his way.

We were currently out at a VIP bar. The castle suddenly felt suffocating–maybe it felt that way because Keira had returned back to her pack–and going outside was just the best thing for me to do.

I could just go over like I always did when I missed her, however, she just returned. As an Alpha, she should be in her pack almost all the time, I knew yet my darn dick, and my brain can't stop thinking, and missing her.

“How about a trap?” Ryan suggested drawing a frown from me.

“A trap?” I repeated.

He nodded. “Whoever this person is, surely Liyana isn't the only spy they have here, secondly, the person without doubt is watching you. Unrelated, but can I ask a question?”

A quick nod from me, and he continued. “Perhaps, is there anything you've got in your possession, something worth killing to have in your hands?”

“What are you insinuating?”

He exhaled sharply, and leaned forward. “I’ve been thinking, and honestly, all these don't add up at all. With all the previous attempts on your life, I started to suspect your company competitor.”

“But then, I thought none of them were brazen, and foolish enough not to care about their lives, thus, I concluded it wasn't them either. Now–”

“Ryan!!” I groaned. “Ask your question already.”

“Sorry. This person was once after your life, but now, that doesn't seem to be the case. Did you not notice the attempts on your life lessened?”

“The person realized I have something worth trading my life with, is that what you mean?”

“That would be the case if you have something like that...”

I scoffed. “I’ve really been belittled, to think they are considering sparing my life over something I might have.”

“Do you truly have anything this person might want?” Ryan fixed me a look.

Instead of responding, I shrugged. “Who knows? Keep a close eye on Marienne, report her every move to me.”

“I shouldn't be questioning your command, but why. Do you think she's also in league with this person?”

I waved my index finger at him. “No. I don't think so, rather, this person is hiding under her shadows.”

He nodded. “It makes sense.” He lifted his glass up, but didn't drink immediately. His lips twitched like he had more to say. “Did Liyana say anything helpful?”

“She wouldn't be among the kingmakers if she were that stupid.” I rubbed slightly on the side of my neck. “However… she said something–” I trailed off unsure if it's something I should believe in.

It won't affect me in the slightest the bluff of a prisoner if the words, or threat were all directed at me, but my woman… I would kill for her, I can't even imagine my days without her.

“...alpha!! You were saying?”

I blinked back my thoughts. “She said anyone affiliated with me must die, my wife included.”

“Christ.” Ryan breathed. “That sounds strongly of someone full of resentment towards you. However much I try to dig, I keep coming back to where I started from, and it's becoming so frustrating.”

“That’s why we are going to pretend like we are unbothered,” I said after a long while of silence. “That way, the other party will likely strike with all their might. I am certain they won't like it if they see that we are uncooperative as they want, thus, they'd strike with full force, probably where it would hurt.” I grimaced at the end of my words.

“But that won't make them leave behind any loose ends, seeing that Liyana of all people has been with them for a very long time, it means they've been on your case for a long time, and they haven't left anything useful that'd help in tracking their ass down, yet you want us to take this risk when we are not even a full percent sure it would work. No,” He shook his head. “Sorry Alpha, but I can't let you do this.”

I chuckled dryly. “You don't think I am going to offer myself on a platter, right?”

“Even the blind can see that's the case.”

I opened my mouth to retort when my phone started to vibrate loudly against my pocket. A frown formed on my face when I saw it was Damien. Why was he calling? Did something happen to my wife?

At once, the frown on my face melted down to worry. “What is it?” I snapped once I swiped on the receiver icon, and placed the phone to my ear.

“Keira–”

“What the fuck happened to her?” I was already on my feet, and almost at the door when he let the bomb roll out. “She collapsed.”

“Fuck,” Worry spiked up, and the only thought on my mind was how to get to Keira. Whatever Ryan was mumbling to me were all but soundless whispers. I needed to be with my wife, I needed to see her, and make sure she was alright, I needed to touch her. Fuck, it was high time I kept her with me, she could rule her kingdom by my side.

Keira will definitely kick a guess if I brought her here, but I didn't give a fuck. Her safety matters to me.

“What happened?”

I pressed down hard on my temple. “Keira collapsed.

“Christ. She must be quite exhausted.”

“Make necessary arrangements, Keira is moving back here.”

“Yes Alpha.”

Keira stirred a little beneath my touch. Her eyes were still closed, it was only a matter of a few seconds until they flutter open.

“Hey.” I rushed, and helped her sit up. “How are you feeling now?”

“Quite fine,” She muttered just before her face morphed into a huge frown. “Why am I here?” Time to kick a fuss.

“Because I need to take care of you myself.”

“I don't understand,” Her frown deepened. “I am the Alpha of my pack, can't I take care of myself?”

“And yet you collapsed.”

She wanted to retort when a knock came on my door. Flashing her a small side which was met with her frown, I stalked off to the door. “Is it because of stress?” I asked as soon as I saw it was the pack doctor Lustre.

She shook her head. “Not anything close to that Alpha king, I'm afraid…” She trailed off. That only increased the fear I never experienced until the moment I realized I had a fated mate, one I would kill to protect.

“Fucking start talking already, you know how much I hate being kept on the line.”

“Right.” She swallowed visibly. “I’m afraid the Luna princess had poison in her blood.”

At first, I stood rooted on the spot, her words yet to register in my brain. Fucking what? Poison? Who dared to poison my wife?

I looked at Doctor Lustre. The fear in her eyes was enough to tell me the poison was a lethal one, but that didn't stop me from asking anyways. “What kind of poison is it?” My voice came out calm, a sharp contrast to the emotions racing through my chest.

“White foxglove, Alpha king.”

“W-White what?” No, it can't be. I definitely heard wrong, it can't be white foxglove. It shouldn't be. Keira…

“I’m sorry Alpha king,” Doctor Lustre's voice filled my ears. Panic, fear, worry. All three emotions seized my being, and I found myself trembling. “Are you certain it's foxglove?”

She shook her head. “I dare admit I was as surprised as you are, Alpha king, it is a rare and dangerous poison. I made sure to double check my diagnosis, I'm afraid it is as I said earlier.”

I am quite aware of the poisonous plant, I know what it could do. And at that point, my woman's life was hanging on a thin thread. Dragging a long breath, I asked with a clenched jaw. “How long does she have left?”

Doctor Lustre looked up, her eyes met mine. I didn't miss the hesitation there. “It’s fine, just say it.”

“Two weeks, Alpha king.” She lowered her gaze immediately.

“What are you talking about, who has two weeks left to live?”

I turned back sharply. Keira's eyes darted from Doctor Lustre’s panicking face, to mine which was filled with obvious worry. “That was a question,” She snapped. “And that means I need answers.”

She walked to doctor Lustre, her steps were slow. When she started talking, her lips were slightly trembling. “Did you say I have only two weeks left?”

I didn't give doctor Lustre the chance to respond, instead, I gripped Keira gently by her wrist, and dragged her back into my room.

Once my door was closed putting a partition between us, and doctor Lustre, Keira collapsed on my chest, her shoulders shook uncontrollably as she cried. I gently patted her on her back, while my mind raced round whatever could save my wife's life.

Of course, there wasn't any cure for foxglove poison known yet. But that didn't mean I would give up. I must save my wife, my
woman, the reason why I breathe.

There has to be a darn way. I can't picture my life without Keira.

“It’s okay baby.” I murmured into her hair. It wasn't okay, but I will make it okay, just as things were before. I promise...
