Chapter 193 His mother, I think
Chapter 193 His mother, I think
Rhys's POV
My mind went completely blank as Mark raised the knife. I had expected to hear Zane's scream the next second but instead Mark burst into laughter the next second.
“I thought you wanted to die.” His voice came next. “Why are you guiding against the knife then?”
Zane opened his eyes slowly. He had closed them tightly and braced his arm over his stomach.
“Who said I was scared to die?”
Mark stabbed the knife onto the wall behind Zane. “I'm going to tell you something. You're just a desperate and sadistic person with a very high inferiority complex.”
Zane's jaw tightened. “That's a lie.”
“Oh, that's very much the truth,” Mark said in a mocking tone. “Sorry to say but your mother never treated you right. You got to like playing hockey because of your mother. Like because you don't really want to be on the rink. No…” Mark paused, raising his hand. “You don't even know what you want. You wasted more than twenty years of your life being what you were forced to be.”
Zane shook his head. “No… no, that's not true. I love hockey. I want to be a hockey player.”
Mark pulled out the knife from the wall and straightened his posture. “No, you don't. You're just in it because your mother forced you into it.”
He stopped next to me and turned to face Zane again. “But sadly, you suddenly found out your own elder brother was a pro hockey player. Something your mother had always wanted you to be and you're scared of being abandoned. Isn't that why you're here?”
“Shut up! You're lying!” Zane yelled. He was on his feet and breathing heavily.
Mark wanted to say something but I grabbed his hand.
“That's enough, Mark.”
Mark turned toward me. He studied me for a few seconds. “Do you feel pity for him?”
I nodded, staring dead into his eyes. Zane might have stabbed me and even done worse things to me in the past but right now, all I see is the twelve years old helpless me.
I had been in the position he was right now. I know what it felt like to be losing the only thing that mattered to you. Mandy might be controlling Zane but he just couldn't let her go.
I wasn't going to force him to let her go or make him realize the truth. She just needs to come to that realization by himself.
“I feel pity for him, Mark, so please stop already.”
Silence thickened in the room.
“Seems like I hold more importance than someone else.” Zane said, breaking the silence.
He was no longer breathing heavily but his hands were clenched beside him and his eyes felt like they were hiding something.
“Get over the delusion, Zane. Mark is going to get scouted soon and I don't want someone being a dead weight on him.” I hissed, struggling to hide my disdain.
I take back my words. I don't feel pity for him, instead I pitied his delusional mindset.
“Are you really sure about that? You're ready to pick him over me?” Zane demanded. “I know you both have a lot of history but he doesn't share your blood.”
Footsteps rushed into the room before I could reply. It was Reed and two policemen.
Reed pointed at Zane immediately after stopping right next to me. “Arrest him.”
“Of course, I'll get arrested. He's your golden player and I'm your black sheep.” Zane hissed.
The police officers grabbed him and began dragging him towards the door.
“Wait!” I called before they could reach the door.
The police officers stopped and Zane tilted his head slightly towards me.
“Brother, I know you care about me.”
He had a proud smirk on his lips that crawled under my skin.
“Care about you? Yes, you're still my brother. But you're wrong about one thing, Zane. But Mark will always come first before you as my priority.” I corrected him.
“We grew up in different environments and I'm sad you have to be this paranoid. You don't have to force things in this life. If it's meant for you, it will come to you naturally. But strangely enough, you have to fight harder for some things you genuinely want in your life.”
I paused, inhaling deeply, the pain from my wounds ached so badly. I was slowly losing my vision also as I had lost a lot of blood.
“The last two sentences are surely confusing but I learnt both of them the hard way. You're too old to live in delusions or blame people for how your life turns out. I hope you think twice about your actions from today onwards.”
I shifted my gaze to the police officers. “You can take him away now.”
The police officers nodded and took him out of the room. I caught a glance at his narrowed eyes, and it seemed like my words got to him.
Reed grabbed my shoulder. “Are you okay?”
I shook my head. “I can't say that.”
He pulled me off Mark's shoulder and placed my weight on his. “We need to get you to the hospital.”
“Let's call an ambulance,” I suggested. “I've already lost a lot of blood and I'm not sure, I'll make it to the hospital awake but I need to stay awake.”
Reed exchanged glances with Mark.
“Please, just listen to me. I know my body best.” I pressed further.
Reed let go of my arm and Mark took over. He guided me to the bed and lowered me on it.
“Are you sure you are going to be fine till they get here?” Mark asked.
I shrugged. “Not sure but it's a better option.”
Reed took another glance at me before bringing out his phone. He dialled a number and it connected in a few seconds. He took a few steps away from me and turned his back on me so I couldn't really get what he was saying.
But just then, the sharp ringing of a phone cut through the air. I turned towards it and surprisingly there was a phone where Zane had stood before.
I tried to get it but Mark forced me down.
“Let me do it.”
He walked towards the phone and picked it up, his brows furrowing when he saw the screen.
“Who's calling?” I asked, impatiently.
Mark turned the screen towards me. “His mother, I think.”
